Everyone at the BHA should be provided with a copy of the letter the Racing Post published on July 29th from Nick Haley.

Thanks for taking the time and effort to post all the replies. It gives even more insight to the company.

On the subject of a stock market float I should imagine that even in today’s economic climate there will no no shortage of subscribers.

I went to France last week to watch a couple of days of the Tour De Fance.
Sunday was an amazing day in the centre of Paris and nice to see a Brit win!
Catch up results later as a few days on the Sussex Downs @ Goodwood awaits.

I personally don’t care whether J. Mc Crakken ever attends another race meeting or not but if anyone thinks a lifetime ban would stop someone if they were determined to ignore it needs to think again.

When Mc Crakken got thrown out of Lingfield it was not until the 5th race and it took a member of the public to inform the officials he was there.

I would suggest the on course layers knew exactly who they were betting with and if they were willing to bet large sums with him why should I bother to run around to seek out some official, then waste more time explaining who he is and why he should be ejected?

Miles Rodgers could walk in any racecourse today unchallenged if he wanted to.

Karl Burke’ stable will be run by his wife exactly the same as Jeff Pearce had his wife run his yard whilst he was in prison.

The whole thing is a farce.

The B.H.A. and the racing press both blamed the City Of London police for not getting convictions in court yet in the City Of London Police review of the case which was leaked (some members of this forum have read it in full) they put the blame totally with the B.H.A.

Well being ‘warned off ‘ has not stopped John aka Jock Mc Crakken still turning up at racecourses.

He was at The Derby and the July Newmarket meeting (1st day).

He only got thrown out at Lingfield after winning 9k and turning up in a new Bentley (not his) so he does not need to go to any great lenghts to disguise his appearance to walk past some pensioner on gate duty.

The Brighton ex boxers are planning a Goodwood jolly on the Thursday of the Festival meeting so keep em peeled as they say!

I have no connection with Patrick Veitch or his publishers.

However to read how some one who started out having just £20-£50 on a horse to someone who made £10,049,993.03 in 8 years he clearly has a story to tell.

This is someone who Michael Tabor used to pay to provide him horses to back so clearly someone who clearly knows what he is doing.

It may suprise most of us but the majority of his selections are from simply studying form, draw bias etc etc and although he may now have some inside knowledge through owning many horses the vast percentage of his wealth was gained by using the form that is there for all of us to see.

I have purchased many horse racing books and this is amongst the best.

The Sunday Times reported last year that the company could well look for a stock market listing and that was one of the reasons the Premium charges were introduced as it was any easy way to maximise profits.

The purchase of Harlow Greyhound track and of Timeform could well be seen as widening the base of the company so it looked liked they did not have to solely rely on gambling much the same way as Ladbrokes started buying hotels a while back.

This could be seen by some as widening the appeal for future shareholders.

Whilst future plans are very confidential your views on this please?

Personally without the recent banking crisis I think they would have got a stock market launch by now.

    p.s.
I purchased your book and it is interesting to see how the early ethos they had seems to have gone out of the window by recent changes

Thanks for your kind words about the book. I take it that in your "ps" you are referring to the final chapter? In this, I consider the philosophy of Betfair today and the company’s original aspirations. One of the most interesting aspects of this to me is whether Black and his co-founder Ed Wray would, all things being equal, embark on a similar challenge again. Leaving aside, in as much as you can, the hundreds of millions they have made. What do you think they each said? It is in the book (and, like a good murder mystery, I cannot give away the ending). Suffice to say their answers say a lot about the world of business today and the challenge they took on – partly unbeknown – in seeking to, as my book suggests, change the world of gambling.

There is no doubt that Betfair will float, ultimately. Investors in the company want to cash in their chips and no one should begrudging them a payout having backed a winner when odds at the start were to say the least long. As to when, on top of projects like my Betfair book, I also write for the Financial Times. Word in the City of London is that Betfair might surprise us all by floating sooner rather than later. We may be in the midst of an economic crisis but not all are labouring under this. A look at the sporting calendar might give some clues when precisely Betfair might float. The 2012 London Olympics, anyone? The diversification in Betfair holdings has been both logical and creative. By far the most significant is the purchase of TVG in America. This is the broadcaster of racing from a host of tracks there, coast to coast, also taking wagers. There are also signs of a break through in Hong Kong. Consolidation of markets in these outposts – Asia and America would dwarf little old Blighty – are what will trigger the plan to float. So, overall, I would say, when not if, and perhaps sooner than you think.

Was it true that when Andrew Black was seeking start up funds he put a business plan to The Racing Post but was turned down?

Yes, the Racing Post did turn down Betfair, which with hindsight was racing’s equivalent of turning down The Beatles. But the Racing Post wasn’t the only organisation to pass on the concept (Andrew Black cannot remember whether he actually showed editorial staff the prototype he had at that stage which ultimately he developed into the Betfair site which went live in 2000). In my book, Andrew Black recalls that he also went to William Hill and Ladbrokes. Of these, he was given a token audience by the latter and didn’t even get through the door with the former. "I began to tell everyone about the idea," You Bet quotes Black. "I wasn’t secretive at all. At the start I began by saying, I have this nice little niche idea. Still, no one was interested. Over time I began to say, this will be big, huge; this is not going to make a little bit of money but hundreds of million." No one was the least bit interested. Of course, they are now.

I currently have 1 big bet matched 2 days ago on betfair on the 1st Test ending in a draw.

If the match ends up as a draw as I have had other bets during he past week/month this will click in the Premium charge for the current period.

Now if that Cricket bet won and was my

    only

bet in the last month no Premium charges will be taken.

    How is that fair?

If I fancied backing the draw today @7.50a.m.
    1/5 betfair (1/20)
    1/20 ladbrokes (currently)

So they got you by the balls (no pun intended).

Who would in their right mind would lump on with Ladbrokes when even after Premium charges and normal commission you’d still be far better off with Betfair.
