cant believe no-one else has nominated notnowcatos performance in the eclipse, ok it wasnt a wide margin impressive win but ryan moore outthought some of the best jockeys and horses. the fact i had a wedge on it helps too. even now i simply find it astounding in a race worth so much and with the participants representing such big stables no one else seemed to walk the course!!!. mind you i wasnt complaining (saying that when he charged across the track on the home turn i was screaming at the tv and calling him allsorts) 5 minutes later i was calling him a genius, chipmunk

I believe that if Notnowcato ran with the group, he wouldn’t have finished in the first three.

So far, Authorized gets my vote for his Derby win.

As for the Arc, if Frankie rides Authorized in the same way that he rode Sakhee to win a few years ago (kick away early in the straight), then I can’t see anything beating him.

Also, I think Raven’s Pass will destroy anything that opposes him in the forthcoming Dewhurst.

One that has just came to my mind is Hold That Tiger winning the Grand Criterium in France.

One thing you need to remember is that spiders are more scared of you than you are of them.

Yes Rob of course they are…..

The more you observe spiders, the clearer you’ll understand how to deal with them and, who knows, you may grow to love them :D

It done Peter Parker the power of good :P

Celtic Swing was a fantastic two year old. Although his racing post trophy win seems the highlight of his career, we must never forget that, before then, he murdered Singspiel by 8 lengths.
He could/should have been a champion but things kinda went haywire after he won in france as a 3 Y O.

I often feel that Celtic Swing would have been a smashing racehorse (as a 3 Y O) if he’d had a far stronger trainer such as Sir Michael Stoute, Henry Cecil, etc

I absolutely adore spiders and was fascinated by them even when I was a toddler. I used to be a member of the British Arachnological Society too.

One thing you need to remember is that spiders are more scared of you than you are of them. This time of the year, male house spiders are often seen sprinting across floors and getting trapped in baths and sinks. They are responsible for arachnophobia more than any other spider. All british spiders are harmless but one or two are still agressive nonetheless such as the woodlouse spider which has a huge pair of fangs for it’s small size.
If you ever do pick up a large spider, then holding it between the 2nd and 3rd pair of legs (and as close to the carapace as possible without harming it) will cause it to freeze since it confuses the nervous system.
This may sound potty but actually picking up small soft twigs or tomato stalks and getting a feel of them (and getting used to it) will give you some idea of what a large house spider feels like to pick up. If you can combat this, then picking up spiders will be a piece of cake.
Don’t pick up a spider by its back legs otherwise it’ll turn around, cling onto your fingers for dear life and attempt to free itself by biting.

Spiders are very fascinating creatures and don’t deserve the sinister reputation that is dumped on them. The more you observe spiders, the clearer you’ll understand how to deal with them and, who knows, you may grow to love them :D

Yahoo, perhaps, for running Dessie as close as he did in the Gold Cup? On the basis of other runs either side I never thought he was quite as good a 3m+ chaser as some suggested.

    gc

That’s a very good point you make there …

Yahoo always came across to me as a horse short of top class. OK, he had some decent wins to his name but they’re nothing one could say were memorable and his gallant second to Dessie is all I really remember him for.

I may get into hot water for this, but, I thought Desert Orchid dominated in an era where the opposition wasn’t that great. One of his big rivals, Kildimo, was a hit ‘n’ miss kind of character who ran some shockingly poor races.
In my opinion, horses like Wayward Lad, Burrough Hill Lad, Arkle and Silver Buck would’ve eaten Dessie for breakfast.

mine would be to be at ayr in the mid seventies for the scottise national, we both backed ASTRAL CHARMER at 66/1 and watched it at home as it proceded to lead from the start, try to run out then won. my father is no longer with us but id love to go back and watch it with him just once, chipmunk

I remember that well … a lovely piece of front running. He blazed a trail and established a massive lead. I was expecting him to get caught early into the straight but, somehow, he kept up the gallop. There was a ‘catch me if you can’ thing about the race that made it kinda gripping to watch. The pack did close on him but he still won by a few lengths. Great stuff! :D

1984 to 1986 was also good. El Gran Senor, Dawn Run, Slip Anchor, Pebbles, Dancing Brave, Bering, Commanche Run.

Can’t believe you left out Oh So Sharp!

Same here. She was a really great filly but doesn’t seem to get the credit she deserves.

Looking at cormack15’s list, I remember a 3 runner race with Pebbles and Commanche Run as joint short-priced favourites and looked sure to have the race at their mercy as they fought out a prolonged battle. Suddenly, outsider Bob Back pounced on both of them in the last furlong for a 33-1 shock. Hilarious!

Brown’s Gazette was a highly talented hurdler who died during a race. He should of won a Champion hurdle too but his chance was blown right at the very start (lost a good 20 lengths).

Harry Hastings was another cracking novice who vanished into oblivion.

I too had to laugh along with Louis and Sharon … I suspect that they were laughing because of the woman’s size. Perhaps she was an apprentice jockey on a shire horse :P

Whatever happened to that potential superstar Monsignor?

Also, anyone remember the Henry Cecil trained Precocious? Only ran as a 2 Y O but looked a champion sprinter in the making and certainly lived up to his name.

For NH, it has to be the late 70’s and 80’s (I was only a kid but my dad loved horseracing and so did I) … Night Nurse and Sea Pigeon were brilliant hurdlers. I remember having a bet on Sea Pigeon in the Champion Hurdle and watched with glee as he cut down Pollardstown and Daring Run with a rare ol’ rattle after the last fence. Thrilling stuff!
Silver Buck and Wayward Lad were my favourite chasers. I can recall the latter at some track making the longest jump I’ve ever seen. He stood off a mile, jumped, cleared the fence … and then landed a mile on the other side! :D

As for the Flat, then it’s the 80’s and all about one horse … the great Dancing Brave (He’s my favourite racehorse of all time). The 1986 Arc is the best race I’ve ever seen but it was nerve-shredding watching it live on TV. The turn of foot he displayed that day was incredible. There’s not a single horse since then who’s captured my attention like ‘The Brave’.
Having said that, there is something about the style/turn of foot of Raven’s Pass that reminds me of DB.

I only tried doing placepots around 3 months ago (after nearly 25 years of betting LOL) and I’ve won 4 times but God, I’ve lost count on the times I’ve had 5 out of 6.

They can be quite annoying

My personal take on George Washington is that he’s slightly overrated and doesn’t have a great turn of foot. OK, he won the 2000 guineas in decisive fashion but, overall, I can’t say that he’s beaten anything special.

Maybe Kieran Fallon is the only jockey who has the knack of riding GW … just like the way Pat Eddery had the knack of riding Rainbow Quest.

I think the hype and the fact that Teofilo was never tested or beaten as a three year old leads people hanging onto the presumption that he was / would’ve been some kind of wonder horse.

Teofilo was a very good 2YO but not brilliant.

Celtic Swing was a brilliant 2YO.
