Me and my sisters were discussing the Grand National on Sunday and we all agreed that, whilst not strict eye candy material, Denis O’Regan does have a wonderful smile :) . He makes a nice change from the usual grim expressions.

I was also warming to Timmy Murphy after his win too  . I saw him in a different light.

Last night I watched the start of a series on BBC2 Wales called "Against the Odds" about a bloke who is far too old, overweight and tall trying and in all probability failing to achieve his dream of becoming a NH jockey.

Anyway, he is being trained by Evan Williams and I have to say I was quite taken with him  . He’s got a twinkle in his eye that could lead me astray even though, at times, he sounds a bit like Uncle Bryn off Gavin and Stacey  .

Don’t get me wrong. He couldn’t replace the divine Sam for me but well, you know, a port in a storm and all that  .

I’ve only just come back from an easter stay in Newmarket so this is the first chance I’ve had to comment on this so please forgive the lateness of it  .

My daughter works for Mark Thompson and she said the yard got more enthusiastic about Smokey Oakey’s chances with every snowflake or drop of rain that fell. On that, we backed him and our winnings paid for our weekend :D .

The yard have won Jimmy Quinn’s weight in Easter eggs. Now while he might be a lightweight, that’s a lot of chocolate! The chocoholics amongst them can’t wait :) .

I’m another lady smitten by Sam Thomas and I’m old enough to be his mum  .

I haven’t posted on here for a while but I visit every day. This is a subject particularly close to my heart as my 17 year old daughter moved to Newmarket three months ago to work for Mark Tomkins.after a rather unhappy period at another non Newmarket trainer.

My daughter is so happy there :D . Mr Tompkins and his staff have been so supportive and encouraging. She gets plenty of feedback on her progress. She enjoys the company of her work mates who do look after her when they go out. She says it is a lovely place to work.

While her flat is no palace, it has good facilities and she is very close to work. The yard have offered assistance if she needs to change her accomodation.

All these factors have put my mind at rest plus the fact she does ring everyday with the days’s events.

My daughter is fortunate to have found the right place second time round because her first placement was everything the Tomkins yard isn’t. She was isolated, unhappy and questioning her chosen career. I worried about her every day she was there. I just thank God she had the strength of mind to leave.

She keeps in touch with some people she was at the Northern Racing College with and it seems that experiences vary considerably. It seems to me that some trainers have absolutely no idea where staff welfare is concerned and that is not good if racing wishes to attract young people in to the industry.

Can’t wait for this :D . I can’t understand why anyone does it ,mind :? . I hate my job and wouldn’t mind the cash but nothing on earth would entice me to eat a kangaoo’s unmentionables or be buried underground in a rat filled coffin  . I quite enjoy watching the "celebrities" do it though :D .

Just saw a very funny one for "Tilda" microwave rice where an Indian mother talks of how her handsome, clever son has brought shameon the family for cooking rice in the microwave :) .

I love the "Bodyform" advert where a woman walks into a building carrying a little dog in her bag. The dog climbs out of the bag with a "lady product" stuck to its bottom :) .

I cannot stand any of the "Picture" ads. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere near Josh, his scooter or his mum and as for the one talking to "Mike" about football…… :x .

I also hate the "Injury Lawyers for You" ones. Why is that woman so angry :? .

I’m a nobody but have a daughter who wants to be a somebody in racing. She recently left Derek Shaw’s and is off to Newmarket in a week’s time to work for Mark Tompkins :) .

I really wanted to Jamie to win up to today but in all fairness, the outcome was exactly right :D .

So much time and effort has been put in by both jockeys, it would’ve been cruel to see one man in the runner up spot.

Both men came across as decent and sporting and they are a credit to racing.

Let them now both go home, have a decent meal, a few drinks and above all, take time out to relax :D .

Many thanks to them both for a fascinating, thrilling competition.

Currently listening to "Hourglass", the new album from Dave Gahan, lead singer of Depeche Mode. I’m very impressed :D !

His first solo album, "Paper Monsters" was excellent and was well received by critics. That was more rock orientated whereas "Hourglass" has a more synth based sound which you would expect from a member of Depeche Mode.

Sadly, there won’t be a tour to promote the album as Depeche Mode are currently in the studio making a new album. It’s a shame as I saw him twice live on the Paper Monsters tour and his solo act is awesome 8) .

I understand what you’re saying there Paul. We’ve never been a huggy kissy family, even towards parents. My mum was seriously ill a few years ago and is now in remission. I always kiss her now because it made me realise how important it was to make the most of her while we’ve still got her.

I’m a bit iffy where handshakes are concerned. You can tell a lot about people from them. A nice firm grip is good but a limp, sweaty one makes my flesh crawl.

There’s a part in the Catholic Mass where the "Peace be with you" handshake is exchanged and I dread it. You don’t know where those hands have been either  . My daughter hates it so much that she dips her hands in the holy water afterwards just to wash the feeling away!

My husband works in Merthyr Tydfil and he is always glad to leave it. It is apparently the benefit claiming capital of the UK and has the dubious honour of being the place where more white socks are sold than anywhere else  .

I’m a bit surprised to see Doncaster there. Having spent a little time there while my daughter was at the Northern Racing College, I thought it was a nice place. There’s a lot of modernisation going on and the people there are amongst the friendliest I’ve ever come across :) .

I’ve seen U2 twice and they are well worth seeing :) . I do like their music although they’re not my favourite band. I just think they’re a group you should see once in a lifetime. They’ve had real staying power over the years and not too many bands can say that.

    reetpetite,
I’ve missed all of ‘The Tudors’ apart from the beginning. It all looked as though Hollywood had got involved in it somewhere and it put me off. Is it on again this week? maybe I’ll try and catch up. Which wife is he on?

Yes, it’s on for 10 weeks I think. He’s still with Catherine of Aragon but currently moving in on Mary Boleyn. Ann is lurking in the background, ready to take over. Bessie Blount has had his baby and there have been other dalliances  .

Just a point of interest, or not, I read somewhere that James Blunt is directly descended from Bessie Blount. His real surname is Blount.

I agree with everything you said Shadow Leader. My daughter was invited to Newmarket for a number of days by the trainer to ensure that both she and the horse were suited. The welfare of both the horse and rider was important.

My daughter won’t let just anyone ride her, however experienced they are as there are certain racehorse traits she hasn’t lost altogether.
