I,ve never been away either, I just love NH racing. With very few exceptions there aren’t any characters you can latch onto on the flat, and when I go to Flat meetings (shock, horror ) they’re recriprocal, & we usually only go to Thirsk & enjoy North Yorkshire for a few days. The atmosphere is totally diferent, the clapping round the winners enclosure is for the most part polite & sporadic, no enthusiasm.
Whereas NH racing, appreciation of even the most humble of winners is great, and concern for fallen horses genuine, many many times have I seen people waiting to clap in a warrior who has been winded & lives to fight another day.
The hurdle scene looks really exciting, mainly Irish hopes but we have Detroit City & Black Jack Ketchum to fly the flag.
The chase scene I think is a case of wait & see, if Kicking King is as good as ever on his return, should make it really competitive.
Can’t wait.
Yes Jeremy, I was there, another 3 can do no wrong at the moment. Knowhere was very impressive, jumped superbly, Greenlough won the Mares Bumper by a very wide margin. Big talking point was Jonjo’s horses, with one exception (Carnival Town) they ran atrociously, dark mutterings round the course that there’s something not right at Jackdaws.
What about poor old Quixy, such a a shame, comparatively young at 21, have you told Geoff S?
I was at Bangor today & with the exception of Carnival Town (2nd 25/1) Jonjos’s horses ran atrociously, there were mutterings around the course that there’s something not right at Jackdaws, but I’m inclined to think a lot of the horses are ‘characters’ whether they’d improve for someone else I’m not sure.
Donald McCain jnr, another winner at Bangor today for Trevor Hemmings. If he’s sending horses to him he must be doing something right.
Yes Graysons will be upset, in those great days when we used to follow him every time he ran, he wore the T Shirt & I wore the scarf!
I have loads of picture of QC & will always remember him with affection
Yes Jeremy, it was where Iris’s Gift came with Great Expectations, and as the season progressed ended up with Hard Times!
What do you mean a decent race for the course, Bangor does have its moments you know!!! I really shouldn’t stand for this, but I guess I’ll have to as Bangor doesn’t have one!!!
What a shame, just been watching Luke Harvey interview him on ATR, lively & joking, you wouldn’t have an inkling, lovely man & a credit to National Hunt racing
The wonderful Bangor On Dee on Saturday
The Crooked Ring
I,m very keen on characters & Harchibald certainly falls into that category. He certainly has loads of ability, but whether he chooses to apply it is another matter, I know he’s had a layoff, but if he decides it’s a going (or should I say passing the horse in front) day he’s perfectly capable of doing it, if not, well we’ve all witnessed that a few times! Still better than being boring & predictable, although he won’t be going in my RP Ten to Follow!
So sad to hear about him, he was a real old trooper. I.m glad you,ve put this in the memorials on the RF site, because most of the ones posted on here are well known, and the old stalwarts like Runner Bean don’t usually get a mention, well done
All this talk about flat horses!!! Do Jay Trump & Ben Nevis count as American raiders?
I named myself Quixall Crosset (wrong sex but never mind) as I am and always will be a champion of the underdog in all walks of life. I belonged to his fan club, saw him run many times including the big 100th run, what a magic day that was!! and I’m still in touch with the trainer
I love horses with character and attitude Claude Greengrass springs to mind (what a dodgepot), Earthmover moved when he felt like it, Or Royal put his best hoof forward occasionally all fervently supported by me, so you get the picture any horse not a boring predictable pea in a pod I latch on to
I,m a bit of a collector of waifs and strays in real life anyway, so I guess that’s me
Oh, almost forgot there are 4 pictures of QC sailing majestically (well alright clambering) over a fence adorning my house walls
A few years ago at Bangor I backed a horse called Leinthall Princess the outsider of the field. It was an absolute bog and she had enormous feet, she duly sluiced home and I got 50/1!!
The horses I thought would go on to great things are:
Bob Bob Bobbin (wonderful name, thought he’d do much better) Lord Sam (love to see him prove me wrong) Steppes of Gold (Nicky Richards shrewd move selling him) & Kadount, very disappointing last season, moved to Lenny Lungo now so maybe new lease of life and all that
It won’t be competing with Bangor On Dee in my heart & mind, cos that’s where I shall be, a wonderful friendly course, much praised by the Irish trainers who bring runners over frequently!
I think Kicking King should perhaps have one run in an ‘easy’ race just to show he’s fully recovered, as it doesn’t seem right to throw him in at the deep end in a competitive race, I do hope he has, he’s still young & jumps magnificently
Bangor On Dee – THE place to be!!!
No Penzance is still with Alan King, and hopeful of a good season.
I think Nicky Richards is a very, very shrewd trainer, after a slow start he’s fast becoming as good as his father and I,m sure he’ll pull a few more surprise packages out of the hat this season (wich I knew what they were!)
