Some of these horses appear to have the same connections and no obvious injury noted so I would hazard a guess that they did not meet their ends on the racetrack but their demise may possibly be linked to the awful economic climate in Ireland at present.

My angle is that if there was an escape route at each fence then horses could run the course rather than running all over the infield. I don’t see why the fences have to stretch the whole width of the course personally ala Auteuil. It wouldn’t be a whole lot of trouble surely, to help avoid these types of occurance, to widen the course by six ft or so onto the infield.

I’ve been saying this for years – it would also reduce the number of incidents with loose horses running down a fence.

They do relish it. I think they are disappointed each year a horse does not die.

This is the first race I remember watching, and the first year I can clearly remember is Grittar, when I was five years old.

I remember the following year in 1983, my Dad gave me the pull out from the Daily Mirror and told me to pick a winner. I promptly circled 38 of the 40 runners saying I’d have those. One of the two I didn’t circle was Corbiere. I guess my ability at picking winners stemmed from there

I have always watched the National, I have only missed a couple of years – I missed Numbersixvalverde’s win as my OH was visiting from Scotland (we were pretty mega long distance then and I had other things on my mind than racing!), and Papillon’s race – I can’t remember what I was doing instead that day, I think I was at a football match…

I was at a pub quiz recently and usually at the half time mark, teams get a picture round to complete. This week, the quiz masters handed out a sheet of photos of horses – not always racing, some just head shots in the field etc. The picture round was, apparently, "name these Grand National winners". After five minutes or so, and a lot of moaning and groaning, the quiz masters said that the picture round was a joke, and handed out the "real" picture round (name these female pop stars  ) Trouble is, by then I had already got 8 of the 12 horses and was rather annoyed!

I love the National, but I find it harder and harder to watch these days, and I think I will be watching with some trepidation tomorrow after the Topham carnage today.

I haven’t backed the winner for 11 years now, though, so I’d stay well away from Bewley’s Berry everyone.

He was struggling to get up but the way his legs were moving it didn’t look like he was going to make it. I feared the worst, and then when the screens were up on the next circuit knew what had happened.

It looked to me as if he had injured his back in some way.

I don’t know why people bother posting on here when they clearly have no understanding of the meaning of this forum or racing as a whole.  I would have no hesitation in deleting such postings if they were to post on my website, as they are not in the spirit of the site.

Anyway, I would like to know where pug got those statistics from.

And of course people who love horses race them, I’ve met and spoken to many owners and more humane people you would struggle to meet.

Yep, Animal Aid would be disappointed if a horse didn’t die in the Grand National, as then they would have nothing to harp on about.

Longshanks has been trained with this in mind for some time, he is my pick.

Bewleys Berry is another interesting one.

I detest the sensationalism that Animal Aid uses, "As he ran past the stands, the roaring crowd jeered the loose horses on, in a terrifying wall of sound of screams and shouts." and "the brief lament to a brave but scared horse who was raced to death."

For goodness’ sake.  If they have a point to make, I wish they would make it truthfully and without melodrama.

I can understand why people do not like the sport and feel uncomfortable about the fact that horses do die in the course of racing.  Most of these people have limited knowledge about racing and the way that horses are looked after.  However they are entitled to their opinions.

Personally I get upset when horses are killed – of course I do, I’m human and I love the animals.  And most people I have met when I have been racing also love the horses and care about their fate.  Most racing fans, owners and trainers are genuine animal lovers and of course it’s a terrible thing to all these people when a horse loses its life.  That’s why I run my website, racehorsememories.co.uk and why I get so many hits.

I still follow racing because I know that without the sport, these amazing animals would not exist.  And they live pampered lives, better than many humans!

By all means, have differing opinions about the sport.  But an opinion is not a statement of fact.  And some of what Animal Aid says is pure lies.  They paint those who do follow the sport as inhumane or cruel – that is simply factually untrue.  And to say that horses are terrified to race – that’s something I have never yet seen and I bet I have seen much more racing than they have.

Oooh extremists make me so angry, and what makes me angrier still is that they get given air time to express their ignorant and false views.

    Nizlopi, The JCB Song.

I’m cringing at the awfulness of it just now, you should see my face when it’s on the radio.

Others would include Midnight Madness, Private Views, Cashew King, Sir Jest, Antonin, Roberty Lea and One Man.
