Having just seen today’s programme:
#PrayforBrough
These things don’t normally get to me. I’m a Saturday watcher, rarely bet and am not as emotionally tied to the horses as many on here. And yet..
As usual, I recorded the racing to watch on Saturday night. During the afternoon, I inadvertently found out that Many Clouds had died but there was nothing about the circumstances.
As the race came on, I was braced and kept expecting it at one of the fences. It never came.
They came round the home turn. Oh, surely not as he’s challenging for the lead? Surely not at the last? Surely not on the flat???
And then he won, in the gamest possible way. That was unexpected. I only hoped it was back in the stables and off camera. Thankfully, the second part was right.
Thanks to MC for the memories and condolences to those who looked after him. And plaudits to the ITV team who handled the situation very well.
How very kind of Luke Harvey to use all his experience as a female jockey to tell Lizzie Kelly that she doesn’t suffer from discrimination.
Agree with pretty much all of this. Chamberlain is normally much slicker, must be nervous.
Thought Chapman might tone it down, that was wishful thinking. Also a general air of ‘top bants’, which is a big turn off.
Absolutely no need for Victoria Pendleton in this context. Alice was introduced then not seen for 90 mins.
On the plus side, I liked the feature on Jonjo. That, and the opening montage, contained some great archive footage.
But not great. Am sure they can do better.
Thanks VtC. I’m not very good at this and I don’t think this will last long, but let’s have a go.
What links Bob Dylan to Nijinsky’s Derby?

It might not be too bad. When ITV cover the cycling, they have interesting and knowledgable presenters, pundits and commentators. Granted, this is on ITV4, but I’d quite happily see the racing there if it means forsaking the celeb-based approach described above. Whichever channel it is though, please no Matt Chapman…
I wasn’t paying all that much attention yesterday, but I saw there was zero coverage of the parade (the chance for once a year watchers to see their horse and colours), and they seemed totally unprepared for the start of the race – Mick Fitz still gabbling to camera while the horses behind him were walking in. It could have been done a lot better.

I’m sure I can’t think of anything that will stump the collective brains here. This is the first thing that came to mind:
What links John Lennon to the winner of the 1994 Norfolk Stakes?

Without consulting the reference books I’ll take a punt at the first day 1982, mainly to eliminate it from inquiries. Colin Magnier, erm, Geordie Dun, possibly Ted Walsh in there somewhere.
Shot in the dark. Did someone go through the card, or ride six consecutive winners across a day and evening meeting?
While your general point – that ITV will seek to put together a diverse team – is fine, your use of the word ‘ethnic’ as a noun is not.
Not heard what Kim Bailey had to say afterwards, but The Last Samuri ran very nicely yesterday, and would have to be a contender.
Honeysdad, was it Levanka (1980) in the Seventh Sky colours? I don’t have the list of colours to hand but I can see the owners have the same surname.
I remember being very taken by Forest Gunner’s round of jumping when he won the Sefton.
I did have the Uncle Bing Topham race once, it was on an old video about John Francome’s favourite races. Must be out there somewhere. It was a fine display.

So, back in 2011/12, we were discussing the music that used to close the BBC racing coverage, describing it as a synthesizer doodle..
Turns out this has been on Youtube for a while, but it passed me by. Go through the coverage of Willie Wumpkins and you’ll get there.
Oh, and while we’re here, let’s have the opening to the first day of the 1980 Cheltenham Festival
And I must plug EddieCR who has been posting extended coverage of early 80s Guineas, Derbys, Oaks and King Georges.

I remember recording a day’s racing off the Beeb in the mid 80s from Lingfield, prob the Friday of the Classic Trials meeting. I don’t know why, but a few horses and jockeys from the first race stick in my mind. I think Swinburn was on Double Pleasure, and these colours seem familiar.
Don’t think it won. In fact, I can’t remember the winner at all.
