I Also, wasn’t there some kind of Champion Hurdle trial on offer? I remember seeing Rooster Booster there.Definitely gone downhill a bit…
This is also going back a fair while but believe the two mile race was originally called the Otley Hurdle. I could be wrong but have a recollection of Jim McGrath having a rant about the race either having to be cancelled or with only a couple of runners when he was at Stratford when it shared coverage with Sandown in the 1970’s or 80’s for an ITV5
Thanks for that, looks like you are spot on. A quick Wiki suggests that what used to be the Oteley Hurdle became the Agfa Hurdle (that’s what it was when Rooster won it), and is now the Contenders Hurdle.
No running took place this year, must have been part of the Tolworth card. But I am 99% certain it used to be part of Sandown’s late Jan/early Feb meeting.
While we’re on the subject, there was also the Agfa Diamond Chase. Has that now morphed into the Masters Chase we saw last Saturday?
I went to Sandown on this day a good while back also.
Can someone with a better memory confirm this. Didn’t the Mildmay/Cazalet race take place on this day? Was that another name for the Gainsborough?

Wayward PrinceI also remember Terry on the local news in the Midlands in the early 80s (Friday nights?). That was when I was a very young lad, just getting interested, so I guess I can lay a small part of the blame on him.
I don’t have a specific memory, nor can I refer to any ride in particular, but there was something that made me laugh, which was in the BBC coverage of the 1974 Grand National, as shown on ESPN Classic a few years ago.
Terry had just retired, I think, and was doing a bit of punditing on the big race. The parade has just finished and the runners are streaming away to look at the first fence. The conversation between Peter O’Sullevan and Terry goes as follows (and forgive me for paraphrasing)
PO’S – Terry, you’ve been here many times before, it’s a tense time for everyone. Tell us how important it is for the horses and jockeys to have a good look at the first.
TB – Well, I never liked it really. They all know what to do and it holds up the start. It’s a waste of time really.
PO’S – (flustered) Right, thanks Terry….
January 3, 2014 at 13:45 in reply to: Grand National weights should not be compressed any more #463697I think I’d agree. Every year when the weights come out, I get excited and tell colleagues some early tips. And then, having explained the concept of handicapping again, I’m always waiting for someone to ask why a special handicap is put together for the National, rather than just running it off their normal marks.
I’m glad no-one’s asked yet, as I don’t think I could answer it. Especially with the recent changes.
Yes, made me wince a bit too. Alice said something like "you do all this and you’re a mum too!"
A shiny penny to anyone who identifies a time when anyone has ever said to a male trainer "you do all this and you’re a dad too!"
A fuss over absolute nowt, some folk want to get a life. How many have ever been for a "chinky" meal?
No, but I’ve been for several Chinese meals.
Reminds me of the exchange in I’m Alan Partridge:
Alan: "Can you say Chinky these days?"
Michael: "Oh aye, you’re alright with that man. ‘Cos it’s a race of people, and it’s also a type of food!"
Not a big race really, but one that sticks in the memory. Think it was a Saturday afternoon chase at Chepstow, mid 90s, two going at it hammer and tongs up that long run-in, only to both come a cropper independently at the last.
Sister Stephanie and King Lucifer, possibly?
Also, I think Arctic Call in the early 90s, in what is now the Betfair Bowl at Aintree?
Enjoyed that video, thank you very much.
Thanks VtC. Didn’t know that for sure, but it seemed a fair assumption.
Who can link a 1980s Cheltenham Festival winner with the song "You Sexy Thing"?
Richard Dunwoody/Port Askaig?
Phew! I’m not sure I could remember all the winners of the Cheltenham novice events, let alone the also-rans! Will give it a go though.
I was just about to come on and give a clue, but that is exactly right Gladiateur. Please set us another.
Scudamore, Dunwoody,…is Francome ineligible because he’s already there as a personality?
February 10, 2013 at 17:21 in reply to: TRF Hall of Fame – Racing Personalites – New nominations #429124I nominate Alastair Down, preferably to replace Chapman.
Ta VtC.
