For those of you bored and with nothing better to do, I’ve made a quiz on Sporcle.
Essentially, you have to name as many horses who ran in the Cheltenham Gold Cup between 2000 and 2009 as you can within 20 minutes. Being the nice guy I am, I’ve left the horses’ trainers as a clue.
http://www.sporcle.com/games/Eric_The_B … ners-2000s
I also did one for Grand National runners. Don’t be misled by the title… it’s not letting me change it. The answers are Grand National runners between 1992-1999. I had to cut a few years because it only allows 300 answers.

If there are any requests and I’m still bored then I’ll try and create some more. Alternatively, if anybody wants to create their own, it’s fairly simple albeit quite time consuming.
Have fun.
January 19, 2013 at 00:08 #426803Good stuff BH, got 130/139 on The Gold Cup, would have been about half that if not for the trainers, ie the likes of Malcolm Jefferson and Mark Pitman. Spelling was doing my nut in, but good fun. Also first time I did it, gave up after a minute, as it wouldn’t accept 2 of my entries which I knew were right, second time it was fine. Either that or I’m even thicker than I thought.
Pretty sure I’ll be able to get 100% on The National, but I’ll give it a go later, depends on the time running out……..aaah to hell with it, I’ll give it a bash…….
keep getting around the 260 mark before the time runs out, and my typing loses the plot

Hopefully you can do some more, enjoyed that.
January 19, 2013 at 19:37 #426930Thanks VTC. I’m glad you enjoyed it. I’m trying to keep it as accurate as possible but with it being done manually and over a fairly prolonged period of time, mistakes may occur. I’ve not spotted any yet but if you do spot anything then please let me know. Also, if you think there’s too much or too little time, I’m open to suggestions. The times allowed are anything between one minute and twenty.
I’ve done four more today… There’s the runners from the 90s for the Queen Mother Champion Chase
http://www.sporcle.com/games/Eric_The_B … se-runners
And 00s Champion Chase runners
http://www.sporcle.com/games/Eric_The_B … se-runners
As well as runners from the RSA chases of the 00s
http://www.sporcle.com/games/Eric_The_B … se-runners
And because you were nice enough to play the game and I gather you’re a fan of staying chasers, I’ve done the Cheltenham Gold Cup runners from the 1980s.
http://www.sporcle.com/games/Eric_The_B … up-runners
It was a bugger trying to find a few of the trainers with my limited resources so I hope you enjoy it!
Thanks also to anyone else who may have played. It’s fun enough creating the quizzes but it really makes it worth it when people actually attempt them.
January 19, 2013 at 20:23 #426934Superb BH, I’ll give that a go tonight!
The times are spot on, I had my 130 for the gold cup horses after about 10 mins, the following 10 fairly dragged in……….with one blank look on my face!

As for The National, 20 minutes is fine, it’s just my typing, can do it in my head, but not with the typing!
I’ll let you know how I get on with the 80’s
Cheers

Nothing shatters the ego quite like being reminded of one’s dreadful memory! You’ve been getting fantastic stores though…To fill the gap, here’s the 1990s Gold Cup runners
http://www.sporcle.com/games/Eric_The_B … up-runners
And if you’re sick of fences, here’s the Champion Hurdle runners of the 2000s which takes in the recent golden era
http://www.sporcle.com/games/Eric_The_B … le-runners
Have fun.
January 20, 2013 at 10:14 #426956Excellent BH, got all the 90’s Gold Runner in plenty time (get a life alert
), but the 80’s Gold Cup had me shouting and swearing at the computer, and I missed out on 5 of them. Shouldn’t have bothered, hadn’t heard of them.Only got halfway on the Champion Hurdle runners and gave up.
I’ll try the others later, but don’t fancy my chances.
January 21, 2013 at 00:00 #427020That’s me "completed" the others BH, results were mixed……
, and I don’t feel the need to post my scores this time, ha!Again, well done on the effort it took to pull them together.
January 21, 2013 at 12:57 #427045Cool beans

Rather surprised to see that two Jenny Pitman stalwarts have been completely neglected in the Grand National quiz whereas a one time decent hurdler with one of the shortest National careers (one run, fell at first) has figured prominently. Memory is a fascinatingly quirky function is it not?
Anyways, for the flat-headed Frankelites amongst you, I’ve set the challenge of naming as many of Frankel’s sixty-five victims as you can. The quiz is rather appropriately titled "Frankel’s Victims".
January 24, 2013 at 11:24 #427292I am very excited to be launching three new quizzes this morning. Right about when the most fascinating weekend in racing outside of the festivals is about to take place.
There’s the Grand National runners from 1980-1985, with trainers.
http://www.sporcle.com/games/Bachelors_ … al-runners
The Grand National runners from 1986-1991, also with trainers.
http://www.sporcle.com/games/Bachelors_ … al-runners
And the Aintree Hurdle runners of the 80s, complete with trainers because that’s the format I’m happiest with at this stage.
http://www.sporcle.com/games/Bachelors_ … le-runners
Enjoy
January 25, 2013 at 00:03 #42736680-85, I was 1 short, and knew the horse…….but the spelling was out

86-91, 3 short just as time was running out….dammit
Excellent effort again BH.

February 2, 2013 at 07:20 #428195Bachelors, you deserve a knighthood for services to racing quizzing. I just need to find some freetime where I can have a go at them all. Thanks for taking the time and effort.
Was about 12 short on the GN runners of 1980-85.
Sporcle is wonderful but dangerously addictive. Had to curtail my activities on there a couple of years back as I was starting to do it in work time and it had been noticed!
I’m on there under the name of Pearlyman and I’ve created a few racing quizzes of my own (a little out of date now) and a couple of music ones.
February 12, 2013 at 00:14 #429332You’re right, I do deserve a knighthood!
Thank you very much for playing and I’m delighted that you’re enjoying them thus far.
I was only introduced to Sporcle during Welsh National weekend last month whilst I was staying with my friend in Bristol. I ended up naming all the European countries for her and I’ve been hooked ever since. I too should cut down on my "Sporcling" as I tend to use it most frequently when I’m supposed to be tidying up/writing essays… It is fun having old grey cells dusted off though and thanks to you, I had Dub Be Good To Me, Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini and Bill Hick’s Play From Your F****** Heart stuck in my head for a week.
I did four more games last week but declined to post them immediately after the Darlan incident;-

Stayers Hurdle Runners of the 2000s
http://www.sporcle.com/games/Eric_The_B … -the-2000sThese complete the set of the Big 4 festival races between 1980 and 2009.
I’ve made a bit of a start on the novice races and hope to have them all done before the festival kicks off. I’m having a problem, however, with the 1980 novice races as I can access the racecards but not the non-runners as there’s no Glasgow Herald from that week. I can try and find out where the microfilms are being kept while the library’s being refurnished… Also, does anyone know the name of the Michael Chapman runner in the 1980 Arkle, Blessed ___?
I’ve got the ball rolling for with the 1980s Supreme runners;-
http://www.sporcle.com/games/Eric_The_B … -the-1980s
And as it’s the Haydock Grand National Trial this weekend, I’ve done quizzes for that particular race including a shorter one covering 2010-2012

February 12, 2013 at 10:54 #429367Good effort BH, sadly, I’m not in a position to put you forward for a knighthood though.
February 14, 2013 at 12:29 #429577Phew! I’m not sure I could remember all the winners of the Cheltenham novice events, let alone the also-rans! Will give it a go though.
