Thought today’s show was disappointing. I doubt four blokes chatting in a studio is going to do much for the average viewer. Ascot was going to be off so I don’t know why they didn’t re-route to Haydock.

You think they can all recamp upto Haydock with a few hours notice? The technical side alone would take more than a few hours

It wasn’t a few hours notice though was it? Perhaps you didn’t but I think most people knew Ascot had no chance yesterday.
January 21, 2017 at 18:56 #1283208I watched the coverage this afternoon. I was really pleased to see Brough Scott, he was excellent. The friction is without doubt between Chamberlain and Chapman, Chapman being put in his place several times. ITV are hoping to draw on a viewer who is not so well educated in horse racing, well for me they have produced a show that is right up the street of someone who knows exactly what is going on, to a purist the show is excellent. This week without Alice Plunkett and Tony McCoy I felt was hugely improved, McCoy I feel is an unimpressive, depressive and mostly boring addition. The fact Ed Chamberlain is no expert is a good thing, he can sort the wheat from the chaff amongst the other guests. Its heading in a good direction.
January 21, 2017 at 22:59 #1283230Watched also – thought Brough was quality – his comment on Alary was particularly poignant given how the horse ran. Also thought the commentary on winter festival / kempton situation was refreshing. Getting to quite like it.
January 22, 2017 at 11:00 #1283256Listening to McCoy is like listening to your accountant who has a heavy cold telling you your tax bill is overdue at a funeral
I only really caught the Scott discussion. Didn’t necessarily agree with some of what he said but he communicated very well. Chapman looked uneasy.

That has to be one of your best lines yet Clive – class
January 22, 2017 at 17:58 #1283349Brough Scott must be knocking on a bit, but still looks much the same as he did 30 years ago
He was always a polished, thoughtful TV presenter who melded well with Oaksey and handled McCririck admirably; but along with most other talking heads on the box back then, there didn’t seem to be the current obsession amongst the viewing public with ‘how they do the job’
They were there, got on with it, we watched them and it, enjoyed it and that was largely that
One of Scott’s more memorable quips was when he was sent north to present live from Catterick. Looking cold and less than chuffed at being there he welcomed the eager millions with: “welcome to Catterick where we have for you probably the worst ITV7 ever”
You gotta laugh
January 24, 2017 at 23:23 #1283675the second show on itv4 for saturday 14 January achieved 364,000 up from 337,000 the week before it was the 2nd most watched show of the week but couldn’t compete with the Dambusters film
Once again itv4+1 could not bring in the viewers with just 2,000 people watching on the hour delay channel.
January 28, 2017 at 20:07 #1284312First time I’ve really watched it today and was really impressed with Ed Chamberlain and how he handled all the Many Clouds fall-out.
Already it looks a cut-above the Channel four product.
January 29, 2017 at 09:45 #1284430I felt a bit for the team there yesterday. It changed from a celebration of a great day’s racing to something very different in a moment. They handled it well enough I thought, not easy balance to ‘get on with it’ while being sensitive to what has occurred.
I felt particularly for Oli Bell, inadvertently lands the Faugheen bombshell on Ruby and then about to interview Aspell just as Many Clouds went down.
I thought Sherwood and Tizzard were both a credit to the game.
And I’d like to see Nina on every week please!January 29, 2017 at 10:51 #1284445Agree with everything that David says above.
The team handled the sad demise of Many Clouds with dignity and respect and the interview with Oliver Sherwood was conducted extremely well. You could see his heart was broken but his first thoughts were for his team and the owners. Such a nice man he didn’t deserve this.
Nina Carberry is a a fantastic Ambassador for racing and Mick Fitzgerald and Alice look so much more comfortable out on the racecourse than stuck in the caravan.
They carried us through a very sad day in a professional manner.
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...January 29, 2017 at 12:44 #1284471Reminded me of the day when One Man died and Clare Balding, who hadn’t been working for the BBC for very long, had to handle the situation. Which she did with great sensitivity and professionalism. And also for the time when Willsford died during what was to be his last race before retirement; was so impressed by the way Jenny Pitman spoke afterwards. These events stay with us forever and the way they are handled by the media make such a difference. All credit to the ITV team for the way they dealt with it yesterday, and to Oliver Sherwood for being so brave himself at such a time.
January 30, 2017 at 11:52 #1284745I caught bits of it but I am really warming to the coverage. Nina is lovely and I do like listening to Ruby when hes in a reasonable mood. Hes sharp and its clear that they will get him on screen whenever they can. Correct move
But the star is the main presenter. I think he gets the balance just right. Clearly enjoys the game too.
What i really miss from c4 is Derek Thompson interviewing some fat northern car half pissed salesman and his ugly smelly wife after theyve won some crappy sprint at Doncaster
February 3, 2017 at 21:41 #1285571If you need to see what Matt Chapman is good at then watch the interview on ATR with Alec and Critique Head tonight
