I’ve even started to watch the ITV coverage from time to time I didn’t bother with Channel 4 Racing at all just stuck to RUK and ATR.

I think the ITV coverage is very, very good, a huge improvement on Channel 4’s coverage.

Bad news for itv racing after steadily climbing over the last few weeks the ratings dropped to their lowest on 4 February with just 286,000 tuning in down from 396,000 the previous week.

To make matters worse only 1,000 people tuned into itv4+1 they probably would be better off with a test card on there to be honest.

It all seems very lacklustre to me. Ed Chamberlin seems insipid and lightweight with his inane grins and lack of charisma and personality, not to mention his seeming inability to ad lib or show warmth and enthusiasm.

It’s good that they are out in the open and away from the studio setting but it’s all a bit lacking in vitality and excitement.

Assuming all these youngsters can drag themselves away from their selfies, phones and Facebook “likes”, I doubt whether many of the thousands who have doubtless migrated with ease and eager anticipation to the delights of ITV 4 will have found much to enthuse them.

Contrived and annoying schoolboy links from Matt Chapman to Ed, pointlessly calling him “Chief” all the time, will not impress the Instagram-obsessed young viewers.

No wonder the figures are not great, especially as the programmes are so earnest but dull and are hardly readily accessible and visible to passing viewers.

To be fair, I can’t think of any other sport, let alone television in general, LESS suited to the ‘+1’ option than horse racing!

Mike, I heard that the bookies love +1!

I really want ITV racing to succeed but have to agree that Ed Chamberlain is just so dull & lacklustre. He might do well hosting the football on Sky but watching today’s coverage just bored me rigid especially as Mick Fitz was there too.

I’m a dedicated racing follower and far preferred watching Racing UK where at Ascot the commentary of Simon Holt was enhanced by the crowd noise especially with the win of Cue Card. I never thought I’d say this but I wish Nick Luck was hosting ITV racing instead.

itv racing had the number one show on itv4 for week ending 19 February, the first time it has topped the channel since it moved there.

Due to the darts racing moves to ITV1 for the first time since new years day on saturday. It’ll be interesting to see how much the viewing figures increase for the switch.

Bit of a low key weekend to be promoted to the main channel (originally scheduled for ITV3). Maybe they are hoping the promotion will attract some floating viewers before Cheltenham.

Is Wrestling scheduled for 4pm? ;)

ITV will broadcast 5 races each day the same as channel 4 did before them.. And before anyone moans and bitches about ITV, this is all they are allowed to show by Cheltenham & Jockey Club Racecourses. As RMG / JCR use Cheltenham as a major selling point for Racing UK subscriptions and the fact that they show all races live..

Interesting Doncaster gets promoted to itv as the only schedule Saturday for the track for itv was St Leger Day and of course that got demoted to More 4 last year.

I wonder if the Lincoln might get promoted to itv as it was one of Channel 4’s big audience days Jim McGrath used to say.

Took my first look at ITV coverage for the Grimthorpe. Only a snippet I know but predictably awful!

Far too much use of the tracking camera. To clearly see how the whole field is travelling and to appreciate the wider perspective of the race the main camera angles are essential. A little use of close up is an enhancement but over reliance on same obscures more than is revealed.

Annoying interruption to the commentary flow by cutting to not one but two analysts for unhelpful bland opinions and doing so after a couple of fences. What valuable insight could they possibly add at such an early stage!

An important and full blooded race, with pertinent implications for the Grand National, featuring an impressive winner on the day and a game staying on performance by last year’s National 2nd – all to rousing approval of the spectators – and within a few seconds of this climax ITV cut to Ed Chamberlin’s monochrome tones which fail to convey enthusiasm or understanding and kill the high atmosphere in an instant.

I never thought I’d miss Nick Luck but he’s desperately needed to bring some enthusiasm to the show, the same goes for Oli Bell who does a pretty good job hosting the morning show. It’s a pity they can’t do a rotating host of the show like C4 did with Alastair Down, Derek Thompson etc, Chamberlain is just a robot.
