It sounds as though Wit was initially looking at the ‘racecard view’.

This is the default view for people who appear to be first-time visitors and offers a simple method of backing at Betfair SP. It’s important to recognise that any prices shown there will only be a guide and can’t be taken (or laid).

Clicking ‘Exchange’ just below the race title takes you to the view most users will be more familiar with, and the one you need to see the market’s current liquidity.

Cheltenham continues to devour all around it I see. Roll on the 5-day festival and Saturday Gold Cup.

Including a handicap chase over 4 miles and 1 furlong called something snappy like the South West Midlands Grand National?

To spare Zorro’s blushes (and in the spirit of sharing of information, rather than as an advert) …

    Out Now!
The award-winning edition of International Thoroughbred

The September edition of International Thoroughbred, the newest and brightest racing and bloodstock magazine on the market, is out now with the top spot in the issue going to the award-winning article written by former Racing Journalist of the Year, Paul Haigh.

Haigh’s monthly “First Word” column scooped the valuable first prize in the inaugural running of the Dubai Summer Festival race-writing competition. The article was praised by the judges for its comprehensive account of the three-day Dubai meeting at Newbury, whilst also addressing the fundamental issues currently facing the horseracing industry.

Haigh walked away £10,000 richer from the lunch held at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel, Knightsbridge by the Arab Racing Association in honour of the award winners. He was awarded his prize by Abdulla Al Ansari, chairman of the judging panel. In addition, a donation of £2,000 was made to DAFA, the charity of Haigh’s choice.

“I am delighted for Paul that his considerable journalistic abilities have been recognised once again,” said Sally Duckett, editor of International Thoroughbred. “We have some great writers on International Thoroughbred, but it is fantastic for such a young publication as ours that we have a journalist of Paul’s calibre to head up our team and win prestigious awards such as this.”

The jam-packed September issue of International Thoroughbred also includes interviews with the O’Callaghans of the leading Irish farm Tally-Ho Stud, Reilly MacDonald of top US consignor Eaton Sales, as well as with Henry Beeby of Goffs and DBS sales.

There is also a run through of this year’s European and US sires whose first yearlings will be offered at auction this autumn, an analysis of the bloodstock market and the economy, as well as the usual top-class racing reviews by Jocelyn de Moubray, Frank Mitchell and the Racing Post’s Martin Stevens.

The publication also includes its regular and extensive worldwide stakes race database, with pedigree analysis by expert Alan Porter.

As an outside bet you could try High Stakes bookshop. They don’t advertise it on their site

but they might be able to track down a copy for you.

I still cannot make contact with them on the 0818 776700 number.
Which means that Market Rasen tonight ( my main interest today) is a non-event. FFS.

I’d question whether all Setanta subscibers have been switched off.

Just to be clear, I wasn’t suggesting all had. Only those who, in effect, had subscribed without also subscribing to a Sky package.

And obviously I don’t know whether that’s true or not. I’m just passing on what I was told when I rang them.

I was told that Sky cut off all viewing cards that were issued for Setanta/RUK subs (as opposed to Sky cards that had those channels added, if you see what I mean).

If that’s the case you’ll need a new viewing card, so don’t wait for a reply to your e-mail, get on the phone to them.

Why they couldn’t tell people this in advance, rather than wait for it to happen, you tell me. I mean they have got a television channel to announce that kind of information on. :x

Remember the good old days when people used to listen to their customers rather than "engage with stakeholders"?

Look at it this way Colin, it’s a much cheaper way of doing market research that the chucking money at Bill and Ben consultants.

And given how much it costs to get into Doncaster these days it’s not a trivial prize that’s on offer.

The ATR site was said to have seen a significant growth in traffic after the disaster that was the original relaunch of the Racing Post site. They must be delighted at this news.

Doubtless Betfair will also be hoping that anyone who just wants spotlight-style commentaries and printable racecards will go to its Timeform free form site and have a quick punt while they are there.

It’s pretty clear the Racing Post doesn’t have any option but to try to charge. The newspaper’s circulation is falling through the floor and the price the investors paid looks a joke now.

For all the criticisms of the current site, it still represents an extensive resource, and — as Romney more colourfully points out — for anyone whose betting style has evolved around its content it will be a wrench to leave.

Charging for something that has been free is always a gamble. It will be interesting to see where the price is pitched. [Apologies if this has been announced. It isn’t in the story.] That, rather than the principal of charging, will determine whether they get away with it.

If I was the Racing Post (or Betfair for that matter) I’d also be conjuring up some package that incorporated the new stand-alone RUK subscription.

The off time is included in results on the ATR web site. According to them it was 8:40:12.

12 seconds makes all the difference. :)

Just to get the answer in first, it means someone can’t type.

& pound ; (without the spaces) is the html code for a pound symbol.

Now the witticisms can begin… 8)

Please be aware that Timeform race summaries and runner commentaries and are not currently available in the Betfair Race Card Interface and Free Form Site, http://www.timeform.com/free/, due to a network outage.

We apologise for the unavailability of this information and are working to resolve the issue urgently.

Just gone up on the Betfair service forum.

    Re the syllables limit

    (passim)

    .

Doremifasollatido ran in the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes at Belmont last night. [Pitched in at the deep end. Didn’t scale the heights. Jockey failed to get a tune out of her. etc. etc.]

    Only in America, apparently.

Many years ago — before the paddock there became the size of a small farm — the pie and peas at Wetherby was a thing of beauty. It hasn’t been as good in more recent times, though.

I had a steak and onion sandwich at Muss earlier this year that was excellent [sorry, I can’t remember how much it cost but it was supposedly locally sourced, so probably quite a lot] and I’d add my vote to the prawn curry fan club.

And I enjoy a latte from those little hopper stalls that seem to frequent most of the Yorkshire courses. I’d rather pay £2.50 for one of those than drink the commonly revolting tea served up in the racecourse facilities.

Xjbssrtpvqkfnujsx could be excluded under the criterion:

Names which would cause confusion in the administration of racing or betting.

The syllables rule is the latest of 13 (count ’em) criteria in Appendix E and, judging from the layout of the BHA’s web site, it appears to have been tacked on in March this year.

I wonder how many were on the committee that decided seven was acceptable but eight was not.

I don’t like Areyouabrianoraben, but there’s nothing confusing about it and

it would be easier to call than the likes of Aayouknownothing.

A name being rejected for having too many syllables tells you more about what’s wrong with racing than any consultant’s report.
