Excellent article IMO
May 20, 2009 at 12:32 #228922Nobody from Betfair on the Betting Committee according to that article

If that’s the case could Paul Struthers let us know why please?
May 20, 2009 at 12:49 #228924Agreed Cormack,brilliantly written. " You never follow a commitee into battle. "
May 20, 2009 at 13:12 #228926I would be cautious of writing the whole thing off yet.
I’ve dug a little deeper in this Racing Enterprises Ltd business I’m suitably encouraged by what I’ve read. This whole exercise does appear to be a considered effort by racings major stakeholders to address many of the problems many of us on here bring up time after time.
It is a concern that these Harrison characters appear to have got off to the worst possible start with this Bill and Ben nonsense and the real objectives have been lost on us as a result. I hope I’m wrong but there’s a certain Millennium Dome feel about the PR side of things. To explain, everyone I know that went to the Dome thoroughly enjoyed themselves and had a good time but its place in our national psyche was well and truly nailed by pissed off journos stuck on the Jubilee Line.
There’s a good chance all of this could work if we don’t allow ourselves to be convinced now that it won’t.
CR, Betfair have been approached to sit on one of the committees according to a debate on Radio Five last night. It may still be available on their website for any that wish to listen to it. It was on between 19:50 – 20:00.
May 21, 2009 at 11:37 #229158Those of you who mentioned late entry to the paddock may be interested to know that at Goodwood the announcer (usually me) is provided with a list of times by which the runners should be in the parade ring before each race (varies according to distance). If some are still missing by then, we make a polite announcement on the paddock mic to remind connections to bring the horses in from the pre-parade ring in if possible (but accepting that sometimes it may not be possible).
Incidentally, agree totally about mentioning refunds on withdrawn horses. Have often done this in the past but will make a point of always saying it in future.
I think there is case to be made for simplifying the use of language in some official announcements. Maybe "hung" would be be better phrased as "wanted to drift" or similar. I have known many a new racegoer to be somewhat bewildered by a post-race announcement saying that a horse "hung both ways"!

Rumour has it that Benbaun is to be renamed Brianandbenbaun, in honour of the rebranding. No horse will be harmed in the branding process.

Where did you hear that Roddy?
May 21, 2009 at 18:16 #229218Racing Post today page 5.Wasn`t you then old boy?
May 21, 2009 at 18:43 #229222It was me…just intrigued as to why it was in Racing Post before they told me!!
May 21, 2009 at 19:05 #229227Good man,why don`t you register Areyoubrianorben, taking out the indefinite article you are one syllable less.?
May 21, 2009 at 19:22 #229229A name being rejected for having too many syllables tells you more about what’s wrong with racing than any consultant’s report.

Would you allow:
Xjbssrtpvqkfnujsx
(typed at random from my keyboard)?
It comfortably fits into Weatherbys character limit, but I would not fancy calling it home in a close finish…

Done that one too but also appealed the decision…depending upon pronunciation one could argue that the original Areyouabrianoraben only has 7 syllables!!
The application was entirely frivolous & just for fun but doesn’t it make you wonder!!
May 21, 2009 at 20:41 #229249Xjbssrtpvqkfnujsx could be excluded under the criterion:
Names which would cause confusion in the administration of racing or betting.
The syllables rule is the latest of 13 (count ’em) criteria in Appendix E and, judging from the layout of the BHA’s web site, it appears to have been tacked on in March this year.
I wonder how many were on the committee that decided seven was acceptable but eight was not.
I don’t like Areyouabrianoraben, but there’s nothing confusing about it and
it would be easier to call than the likes of Aayouknownothing.

Their is a racehorse called EIGHTEENCHARACTERS.
Which is the same number of words in length as you are allowed to use to name a racehorse.
And by the way Ben is not the Messiah, but Harrison Frazer think Brian is a very naughty boy.
