There’s an on-course firm trading as Jack Wilson – complete barm-pots the lot of them – won’t lay a decent bet and they tend to hang around on their joint after the last race as though there’s another one due and only they know. A couple of years ago they advertised in their local job centre for a computer operator/clerk – £40 a day! You pay peanuts….

They wanted about £25 to get into members at the last meeting – the swines!<br>

Aranalde, I spent three years working on-course before switching to full-time racing journalism/tipping. It’s a bloody good education as far as improving your punting is concerned but you will need a thick skin, a willingness to learn and thermal underwear. I’d be happy to ask around on your behalf (for potential job opportunities, not long johns). I’ve PM’d my email address.

Sir Harry, try visiting the Queens Hotel on Thursday night – then you’ll see what crowdings all about!

I have a vested interest as I work for said rag but what difference does ten pence make? Would you stop going to your local pub if the beer went up from £2.80 to £3.00? I’d probably have a moan, within earshot of the landlord, then shout "same again please!".

Shadow Leader, we may have dead-heated in the ‘done yer bollox stakes’ (or titz in your case, no offence). I backed Idle Talk each-way at 25-1 (fell), Neptune Collonges each-way at 7s (fell) and Our Vic to win at 9-4 (second) – doh!
Wallace, if he drops £250,000 in a day at Cheltenham it’s just another 1p on a bottle of mineral water for the next few weeks.
Ruby Walsh, on getting off an unfit Dom D’Orgeval, third to Inglis Drver and Irish Wolf at Newbury, announced that that pair would never beat him again so I wouldn’t get too carried away with the Howard Johnson runner.
Cheltboy, I hope you’re right. I’ll ask him at Cheltenham tomorrow. If you’re ever going racing and Freddie is attending you MUST check his odds before placing a bet – it can be 13.5 on Betfair, 12-1 tight in the remiander of the ring but 16s with Freddie because he doesn’t fancy it – just don’t ask for the fractions!
Reet Hard – you haven’t missed the 9-4 Our Vic – he’s that price with Ladbrokes at the moment.
AP
Master Oats won the ‘Welsh’ National at Newbury because Chepstow was abandoned. It was still 3m6f in the mud admittedly but arguably on a less demanding track.
It’s also interesting to note that the last five Welsh National runner-ups were beaten at odds of 5-1, 2-5, 4-5, 7-2, and 3-1 on their next starts. Wish I’d known that befoe backing Mon Mome!
It would have to be Our Vic for me at this stage – won the last four times he’s been rested for around 5 weeks or longer. Three-month break is a bonus. Neptune Collonges will love the likely heavy going and would look the biggest threat.
I’d be wary of backing Halcon Genelardais at a short price given the poor record of Welsh National winners on their first start after Chepstow…
