My beloved Kauto was done after that first mistake – took any race he had out of him. I’m just glad he and Ruby got up ok.
Lovely to see Denman run another big race but IC wasn’t to be denied. I really wasn’t expecting that. Fantastic win by Imperial Commander.

4.40 QuevegaAP did a great job on Denman, well, certainly for the first circuit when he was travelling and jumping well. However, the big horse looked like he was starting to feel it just before the first mistake. After that the race was done as he wasn’t coming back from such a hit.
Hope Denman is ok!
AP is a legend and will do a fantastic job on Denman but it won’t change where he’ll finish (2nd, at best). At least in this year’s Gold Cup he won’t be staring at Kauto’s a*se until 3 out…. only for it to fade into the distance as Kauto leaves him for dead.
From the Racing Post:-
"McCoy was also full of admiration for Kauto Star’s William Hill King George VI Chase win, describing it as "the best I’ve seen from a chaser", and reckons the Totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup is a straight match between him and his Paul Nicholls-trained stablemate Denman.
He added: "There are definitely only two runners, and brilliant though Denman’s Hennessy performance was, he will need Cheltenham to be pretty testing to win the Gold Cup."
Cheers AP!
BB looked in trouble at one point and then just ran away from them all – very nicely done!
From The Racing Post:
Denman’s joint-owner Harry Findlay agreed that Kauto Star had been exceptional on Saturday, but said: "I still think Denman will win in March, but before the King George I thought we were a raging good thing, now it’s become the greatest battle of all time.
"I think more things are in our favour in the Gold Cup and I’ve always believed that we could beat Kauto at Cheltenham even though Kauto might be the better horse."
As a devout Kauto fan I’ve always believed that Kauto is a better horse than Denman – I think his greater achievements and versatility prove that.
However, I do agree with Harry Findlay that more things are in Denman’s favour when it comes to the Gold Cup. I think the Tank is more suited to the race/conditions than Kauto which makes him even more of a threat given his undoubted class.
Roll on the 2010 GC – if they both turn up fit and well we are in for a hell of a race.
Simply incredible – what a horse.
Barring incident then Kauto Star wins this by 10+ lengths. He will destroy the opposition. KG victory #4 coming up.
Poquelin 11/2 ew for me though, with a saver on Razor Royal and a RFC for luck.
Well done Fist – you’ll be happy after that result.
Would love to see Well Chief win this one but my money is on the favourite, Big Zeb. BZ will be too good for this lot…. mind you, I said the same thing last week about Binocular in the Fighting Fifth
Another masterclass in picking winners from myself!
Well done to those who picked Twist Magic.

Fist, on that form, Kauto Star won’t see which way Denman goes.
I agree, Denman will be behind him when Kauto crosses the line for GC #3.
I’ll wait until after the King George before making my decision, .
Seriously though, I’m still with Kauto Star for the GC. Denman was magical today but I don’t think his performance would have beaten the 2009 GC winning version of Kauto Star.
There is still a long way off till the 2010 Gold Cup but it’s looking like it could be an epic battle.
The only way Ruby will be on Denman in the GC is if Kauto doesn’t attend the festival – god forbid.
Today’s performance by Denman was exceptional but giving weight to lesser horses doesn’t compare to beating Kauto Star at level weights, imo. That’s not knocking the performance as it was incredible but I don’t believe it would have won Denman the GC in March this year.
Likewise, I just hope Kauto and Demman make it to the festival fit, well and on top form… then the battle can commence!
Back to the horse of the hour – Denman, fantastic win today… welcome back!
That was a joy to watch. A truly excellent weight carrying performance.
On paper this looks a very competitive race but I’ll go for Binocular here. He’s the best of this bunch and should leave them for dead once he clears the last. C’mon Binocular!
