I nominate Martin Pipe’s Art Prince, who fell at the first on both of his National appearances (2000 & 2001).

I think the 3/1 on Frankel having a Royal Ascot winner is the worst bet there. You need a really early type for that – and Frankel was a mid-backend juvenile. Wesley Ward will probably cover at least one or two of the races with his juiced-up monsters and proven two-year-old sires like Zebedee and Kodiac will have strong contenders.

More than half of Frankel’s first batch of mares were best at 1m 2f+, so you’ve got to suspect many will be saved for the backend or debut at 3.

You must have some reservations on his speedier progeny too. Sir Henry Cecil was quite open in saying that Frankel was a complete psychopath in his first few months at Warren Place – aggressive, impossible to steer, more of a wild animal than a racehorse. Less gifted trainers than Sir Henry (i.e. everyone) could have a tough time nurturing their Frankels if they come out as fiery as the sire.

Harbour Watch looks like a great bet at 7/2 to me. I’ve just had a lump on that. He was the one of the sharpest juveniles on the list, has the most runners on the ground and will be supported very well by two-year-old guru Richard Hannon.

Casamento is likely to be more of a slow-burner, even more so Bated Breath. He was quite a tall, rangy horse for a sprinter and his stock will probably need time to grow into their frames. I understand Coolmore have retained more by Excelebration than Power, which might give a hint of who they rate to be the better prospect. Excelebration was quite sharp (June 2yo 6f winner despite being an April foal), but I presume Ballydoyle have the cream of his first crop and other Irish trainers will account for quite of a few of them.

Sir Prancelot looks a smidge overpriced at 14s too. Richard Hannon will have plenty of his first crop. SP was a very sharp type – debuted in May and won twice before unlucky fourth in the Coventry, then held form/improved to win the Flying Childers at the end of the year. His lesser numbers and Irish stud base temper the enthusiasm though.

I love the idea but think it would probably be best on the all-weather. As mentioned above, the first runners would get the best of the ground on turf, especially if you were using a course with an established ‘racing line’ preferred by most jockeys. I don’t think the courses would appreciate the damage to their turf, either.

I also think it would be best at 7f and beyond. Half of the challenge with a cycling time trial comes in pacing yourself correctly to use maximum energy and get the fastest possible time. At five furlongs, there is less jockey skill required – it’s little more than “ping the start and start pushing”. A longer distance would make for a better test of riding ability and make it more watchable by giving TV/racecourse commentators/analysts something strategic to talk about.

Great idea DC. Time trials are public knowledge (if not competitive) in the USA and Hong Kong, which can only be good for punters and the integrity of the sport. Maybe you could even make it compulsory and stipulate that every sound horse in training must take part in a time trial at least once per season.

It’s Coral Easter Classic day. Cancel all family get-togethers and watch an artist at work as Kirby tries to come from last to first up Lingfield’s inside rail on Grendisar!

Oops, posted on the wrong account there. I think I got too old for ‘The Young Fella’!

Hi Blue: I’m sorry to hear that. I was poorly treated by a bookie’s CS team last week so I know how you feel. I can only apologise.

    Purwell:
thanks for mentioning this. It’s the first I’ve heard of a Windows phone issue, but I’ll get it raised as a high priority. I don’t have one myself, so what happens when you try to get on the site? Does the homepage load then freeze or does it crash before that?

    Hi all,

TYF here – new account, long story.

I’m sorry that you’ve had a tough time with Coral’s website during the Festival. I followed up the Bonus Bank issue this morning and indeed there were some problems with free bets being credited incorrectly. As you can imagine, this was a very popular offer, so we’re sorry it was not delivered properly.

As to the website problems, these issues aren’t really my area, but I’m determined to get this betslip issue fixed for everyone. This “not able to add to betslip” bug is a weird one. I can’t replicate it, nor can anyone in the Stratford or Gibraltar offices. I have seen enough people on here, on Twitter and on other forums talking about it to believe it exists though. To help the investigation, could anyone having problems please DM me with:

    – Coral username
    – Exact time of problem
    – Browser/browser version
    – Screenshots (if possible)

    Thanks!

I am taking on Black Hercules this week, so the form of his race is something I’m keen to attack. I’d hate to back a son of Shantou over 4 Miles, so Measureofmydreams is out of the question for me. Noble Endeavor is not a certain stayer either.

Minella Rocco looks bottled-up at the prices given his clumsy nature. I think Southfield Theatre has a solid shout as a certain stayer and safe jumper with a touch of class. He held Native River around Kempton (which would suit neither horse perfectly) and can be upgraded given that he jumped left throughout. Nina Carberry is a big plus too of course. He’s my main bet.

Local Show is an interesting outsider, possibly overlooked given his less sexy jockey booking. His level of form is very high indeed, with his win over Onenightinvienna looking rather impressive in hindsight. His jumping is a weapon and he is arguably the strongest stayer in the field.

Native River’s jumping and attitude leave plenty to be desired and I can’t see why he would reverse form with Southfield Theatre.

I think this could be The New One’s year. Twiston-Davies is bullish and his list of excuses actually seems to correlate well with this horse’s recent history. He said TNO wasn’t fit enough to do himself justice in the Christmas Hurdle, which certainly makes sense when you look at his unusually weak finish there.

If we see The New One as he was two years ago (and that seems to be the promise), then watch out Annie!

Annie Power also has her obvious strong chance, but The New One at his best picked apart old yardstick Zarkandar just as impressively as she ever did.

That’s the value angle for me. I’m strongly against Nichols Canyon as he is much happier on deep ground. Identity Thief should improve on a sound surface but looks very skinny in the betting given the actual level of form shown so far.

It’s all about Holywell for me too. He’s still very well handicapped on any of his Cheltenham form. His Ultima win (clear with well-treated Ma Filleule, ahead of Kim Muir winner The Package) gives him a great chance. Not to mention the Gold Cup run!

Many of the novices could get involved with a clear round. Out Sam is not the most straightforward horse, so I wouldn’t be confident of a fluent display from him. I liked Kruzhlinin at first given the ex-McCain angle, but he’s up to a mark that he struggled on even at the best of times for that yard.

As much as I dislike The Young Master in general, he does have good claims on 149. Ballykan was a big eyecatcher in the Racing Post Chase and I could see him getting involved if he can sharpen up his fitness and jumping.

Well done that poster who got 16/1 ew on Sizing John. I’m on at 6/1 (W/O Douvan). No doubt his Midnight Legend pedigree will serve him well on the drying ground.

    Yo, glad to be back.

I think you’re all kidding yourselves if you’re trying to make a decision about whether Min is good or bad value. We have so little information about his ability (though we have a general sense) and we don’t know if any of the recent rumours are true. It’s frustrating, but ‘Without Min’ or each-way seems like the only way to go here.

I think Altior is the mug’s bet in the race – slow horses are often caught out in the Supreme and this is not a good traveller. I prefer Buveur D’Air as the quicker model, but he is still a bit raw, keen and weak.

Not many people have been talking about Bellshill. We’re all disappointed that Yorkhill isn’t running, but Bells was arguably the pick of the Mullins bumper horses last year. He was Ruby’s pick at Cheltenham, but you get the sense that this horse badly needed experience to show his true ability. He travelled better than anything in the Aintree bumper until smacked away by Barters Hill and showed some incredible speed at Punchestown. Jumping is a slight worry but his odds more than account for that. Bumpers showed him to be a much more able horse than Altior and Buveur D’Air, after all. If he bounces back from his last run, he should be bang there.
