Be the lay of the decade at odds on, a late April foal, a filly, switching from the warmth of Florida to Doncaster at the start of April.

The trainer is quoted as saying “I am very excited about it. We have a filly that rose to the top of the ranks on grass at Palm Meadows”

Now Palm Meadows sounds like one of those vast Florida retirement villages, but it’s actually a training centre with room for almost 400 horses next door to the Gulfstream Park track. But the horses aren’t allowed to do proper workouts on the turf track there, which is only open for a few hours each week, and can only be used for ‘breezing’ according to the Gulfstream Park website.

So although workouts on the Palm Meadows dirt track are timed by the official clockers and the info reported on the Equibase website, there are no workout times for the turf track. So ‘top of the ranks on grass’ isn’t quite so exciting as it sounds.

Still, good luck to Mr Ward – one can admire his spirit of adventure and he clearly isn’t coming to Doncaster for the prize money!

The fille is by Oasis Dream out of a mare called Anabaa’s Creation, who won two races in France as a 2-y-old, finished 4th in the Prix De Diane and when sent to California, ran Zenyatta to a head in a Grade 1 race at Del Mar over a mile and half a furlongs.

April foal, training on dirt and breeding… Will any of that matter Alan, if the filly has been trained on Clenbuterol? A substance banned over here, last time I heard not banned over there, which can be used as a growth stimulent.

What is the betting this is yet another freakishly over-grown/mature 2 year old from this stable?

Must be a coincidence that Ward has been banned multiple times for misuse of Clenbuterol under US rules.

Encouraging runners from places with vastly different rules is asking for trouble imo.

Some of Wesley Ward’s 2yo’s had more muscle mass than Frankel ever did at that age, how he is allowed to get away with it has bothered me for years.

When Hootenanny won the Windsor Castle stakes at Royal Ascot in 2014 he earned a speed figure from me of 100 (121 with WFA) on going I had at +0.13s/f good, the alarm bells went off in my head as Frankel had only managed a speed figure of 102 (minus WFA) from me, and he is still my highest rated horse at 128 (minus WFA).

My analysis of the time was to drop the speed figures of the race by 15lb, which proved to be spot on.

So what is going to happen in the Brocklesbury, a race that has lost it quality over the years, will we have a repeat of the Flockton Grey “Good Hand” 1982 Leicester 2yo race, and see Wesley Ward’s runner win by 20 lengths.

    Mike.

Sutter County is rated 94 by the Racing Post, which is higher than Golden Horn earned for his first win, which was in October of that season.

I think Timeform gave William Haggas’s War Department more than 100 for his debut win last season but the horse ran another six times after that and was utterly dismal. He declined steadily to a mark of 78 come season’s end. Mark Johnston had another good juvenile who hosed up at Wolverhampton but it’s early days for these young horses and the early trailblazers usually end up fading out of the picture most seasons.

Aidan O’Brien recently had a couple of horses who were ridiculous 8/1 favourites for the Guineas the following year after 5f wins and that was before the Royal Ascot meeting was even upon us. The quickly faded from the picture.

This Wesley Ward horse will probably be a freakish behemoth who looks about 4 years old and if she hoses in she’ll probably be 10/1 favourite for the 2017 2000 Guineas. We saw Acapulco win at Royal Ascot last year and then go into ridiculous odds for the 1000 Guineas. It was only fairly recently that she disappeared from the betting for that race and it is utter fantasy island material that a horse who only got 4f in the Nunthorpe would manage to last home over a mile in the Guineas.

I’m not a big fan of these forward physical specimens but each to their own. She is looking big though:-

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

some of the ratings by the boys at timeform, are at times baffling to say the least. But i am sure they could tell me why he got that rating and how silly i am to question them

    Wesley Ward’s hamster… :D

This guy is a machine. All he does is work out and pick winners. Talk about fit. You should see him without his shirt off, serious side of beef.

I wouldn’t back Sutter County for the Guineas.
Might get 7f, but bred to be a sprinter.

By sprinter Invincible Spirit, dam a half-sister to “Denman”. ;-)

Every horse needs rating after running for the first time nwalton. It can’t be easy, but with Sutter County seemed a fairly even pace, Timeform have (it seems to me) taken the time and compared it to other times both on the day and in the past. Come to a decision what the time is worth and then added a little for how much he could’ve done (eased down in final furlong). If you want to understand more of how the rating was produced: Take a look at the two previous races and the one after Sutter County’s (all Class 2’s) and compare their ages, weights carried and the times they all produced. Once this is done there wasn’t much option but to give Sutter County the rating they did.

But who knows? Horses are not machines, Sutter County might turn in to a right dodgepot like War Department did. Alternatively, could turn in to the best horse in Britain, like Golden Horn did after producing an exceptional debut rating on Nottingham debut or (from this stable) Lumiere did on debut.

Quite a few 2 year olds produce a rating of 100+ during a season, but this is unusually early. Although it should be remembered a rating of 100 should not be exaggerated. On that day at Wolves two older horses put up better Timeform ratings in handicaps than SC and he’ll need to improve to win at Royal Ascot. It is though very encouraging.

yes i do know they need a rating but imo(at it is only my view) i think it is excessive.I was once a subscriber to Timeform Perspective(a very good product when in circulation)but now i wouldn’t even buy one of their racecards, let alone listen to them on tv.But its all about opinions and many still love the boys from halifax works.I remember, last year,on ATR,one of their experts put up a horse because it was top rated, even though it was a ‘million’ to win let alone act on that days going.

btw i think War Department never got over a torrid run in the coventry

From your original post I thought you weren’t sure, asking a question and actually wanted to know “why”.

“i am sure they could tell me why he got that rating”

    My mistake.

    Sorry I wasted my time.

well it is that simple if a horse dont go on the going(imo of course) which he had tried on a few occasions.
Again imo the going is one of if not the biggest factor in selecting a bet.I suppose others have differing methods
