Just curious…. when Kauto hammers Denman and wins the GC what excuse will you lead off with in defence of your beloved horse?

That one, of course !

I’m sure you’ll think up more between now and the race!

Kauto Star stands to win a £1m bonus if he wins the race, Denman doesn’t.
A very good point – and certainly one which even the most hardened Denman supporter must take into consideration and not dismiss lightly. Not that I’m saying that there will be any jiggery – pokery, of course… no, no, no…

For me it comes down to how good Denman actually is. He looks a monster and has run some good horses ragged this season. However, he has never taken on a horse with Kauto’s class before. Once Denman winds up to top speed can he shake off Kauto? In my opinion he won’t – I feel Kauto will be too good for him on the day and will win his second GC.

Hi Gareth,
I got my copy of the Cheltenham Festival Betting Guide 2008 (by Paul Jones) from the Racing Post website, £13.95, including P&P.
Regards,
Kalidor.I’ve only been betting on horses a few years now and whilst I’m not a big gambler I always tend to go for each way bets. I do the occasional win bet but not as often as I feel should.
I do keep a record of all my bets though. I have every horse bet I’ve placed over the last few years in a spreadsheet listing percentages, stats etc. Whilst my win percentage is not bad for a social/amateur punter my place percentage is pretty good. Maybe I analyse my previous bets too much and stick to the EW stuff as I feel I’m better at that…. or maybe my picks are just sh*te from a win perspective!

an unpredictable, moody nut-job like Turpin Green
class!Glad to hear the great horse is fine. Would be such an anti climax watching Denman canter to victory in the Gold Cup without the sight of Ruby and Kauto in vain pursuit of the big horse.
Well, at least the KS faithful will have their excuses ready, eh?

If Denman wins no excuses will be made but what will your excuse be when Kauto(and his dodgy foot) destroys Demnan?

Great news!

Hope is all we have just now but Kauto’s well being is the most important thing. Even if he did make a remarkable recovery from whatever injury he ‘supposedly’ has (fetlock, virus…) the GC must surely be out of the question.

Tragic news …..hope it is an overreaction but it doesn’t sound good.

Broke my heart watching KK earlier
. I’ve never bought into the ‘bounce’ factor so based on that performance he’s not going to be competitive in the GC. There is always hope but I think it could be time for Kicking King to retire.Another excellent performance from Kauto Star (as expected). Such a classy horse.

All roads lead to Cheltenham now. Fingers crossed Kauto, Denman, Exotic Dancer and the other Gold Cup hopefuls get there safe and sound.
In keeping with my tradition of refusing to back Kauto Star because he fell in the Champion Chase in 2006 when I was on ante-post at 10/1 (I may have mentioned this before), I will be taking him on again tomorrow!
Surprisingly my selection is not Monets Garden or even Racing Demon but the enigma that is Vodka Bleu.
Firstly I should thank Andrew Mount who has done most of the donkey work on this:
When racing on good or faster over dist of 2m3f – 2m7f his record is 111100 with the 2 defeats being over the National fences and the 2nd at last years Paddy Power meeting when Pipe’s stable ran like drains.
While I appreciate that the horse has a little bit to find on the principals and also that his form figures read more like binary notation than those of a Gr1 horse, I think he still hasn’t achieved his full potential over fences. His hurdle run earlier this month was merely a warm-up and I expect him to go close tomorrow and maybe even shock the champ!
Vodka Bleu, lol, keep dreaming mate
. The only way Kauto Star can possibly lose this race is if he falls. Even then I’d take Ruby to re-mount and still win
Katchit has NO chance of winning the Champion Hurdle this year. Wait, that is a bit harsh, he does have a chance but with likes of Sizing Europe, Osana, Harchibald and Sublimity all in the field I fear little Katchit won’t figure in the first three home. If you’ve backed him you’ll certainly get run for your money but he’ll be up against it in this company.
Harchibald for me assuming his a*se doesn’t collapse (again) once he comes off the bridle

Gold Cup for me: Kauto Star, Exotic Dancer, Denman, Kicking King…. epic potential!

3 times he has been asked to race at anything like the pace the Gold Cup is likely to be run in:
.The Gold Cup will most likely be run at the pace that Denman dictates. It will be a small field and I don’t see any obvious reason why it will necessarily be a strongly run race – it certainly wasn’t last year.
I agree, the GC will be run at Denman’s pace. Sam Thomas is not stupid enough to let things go too slowly. Denman will wind up to his top speed and then gallop on in the hope of running his rivals ragged. Unfortunately, that won’t be good enough to win as Kauto Star will cruise by him two from home and that’ll be it for Denman – done. Long live King Kauto!

I’m not as sensible as some of the other gamblers that have posted as the festival is the one time I go crazy by my own betting standards. I allocate a set amount of money per day and then spread it out over the card. I will most likely back something in every race. It’s a once a year thing though so I set money aside for it in advance. My mates do the same as we always have the festival week booked off work to hit the pub and watch the racing.
