A fascinating option at that trip would be the Paddy Power. Under the conditions of the race, he can’t be allocated more than 11st 12lbs, and with his rating likely to rise to around 175 after Aintree, most of the field would be out of the handicap.
After all, how many other chasers are there rated between 150 and 175 – not many and Nicholls trains most of them.
Of course it won’t happen, but it would be great to see connections have a go.

Fully agree. It would go a lot further to telling us how good he really is compared to last Sunday.

You’re not the only one that feels that, many on this thread have expressed the same thoughts. But for Nicholls to come out and actually suggest he’d rather target a Grade 2 race at Cheltenham worth significantly less than the Queen Mother is fascinating in my opinion.

Surely he’s simply looking at the horses’ long term interests, rather than going for the quick buck.
He did after all win over 2.5 miles as a 4yo, his best French form, and PN apparently sees him as Gold Cup horse eventually.
I’m not suggesting that he is certain to stay the Gold Cup trip, but he would be far from the first winner of that race to learn his trade over the minimum trip.
Does add to the confidence for the King George though.
October 25, 2006 at 05:36 #80855Even though Paul Nicholls states the most likely target at Cheltenham is the Ryanair Chase now, connections surely wouldn’t be able to resist going for the Gold Cup this season if he wins the King George.
Would seem like a backward step to go for the Gr.2 Ryanair if that was the case, as surely the horse will have champion status if he wins at Kempton, and therefore should go for the championship race at the Festival.

November 18, 2006 at 15:06 #459I know I am getting old – the last time I posted was to say how much Detroit City reminded me of Persian War the best younger hurdler I have ever seen – but this Kauto Star is a proper horse. In over 45 years of watching chasing ( yes I saw Arkle and Flyingbolt in their pomp) I cannot remember being so impressed by the way a top class race was won.
War of Attrition and Kicking King would not hve beaten the Kauto Star we saw today. Lets just hope he remains sound and in form for the Gold Cup
November 18, 2006 at 15:12 #31330He didn’t beat a lot today, so I couldn’t really say how good he is. The horse is decent, that’s for sure.

If he’d been all out to win by a length, I’d say that was fair comment but he beat them a stone with more to spare.
He’s exceptional.
November 18, 2006 at 15:43 #31332A stunning performance whatever way you look at it. THe clash with Monets Garden and Star De Mohaisonhsould be good.
November 18, 2006 at 15:46 #31333I’d rate him on a par with an in form Kicking King. No better, no worse.
If that entitles him to a KG and a Gold Cup, then more power to his hoof ;)
I’ll wait to see what he achieves before parading him as a potential wonder horse.
November 18, 2006 at 16:08 #31334A fine performance.
The best since a certain dashing grey would seem an appropriate comparison in the light of recent events but not going to get that carried away just yet.
Only the briefest of appraisals but I’d have him running to a conservative 175 today.
Need to see the race again of course but first impressions lead me to believe there’s no reason to suppose L’Ami nor BOS (British form) were below form and it’s quite feasible OM returned to something like his Charlie Hall win. So content to have those three around 160.
Roll on Kempton and Monet’s Garden.
November 18, 2006 at 16:13 #31335So would we have kauto Star as favourite for the Gold Cup now? Is the extra distance there going to be a problem?

WOW!!!
The 2nd time this season, and both for the same horse.:)
PN was staggered by the ease of his first win this term, Ruby Walsh was almost speechless with the ease of his 2nd.
The best I have seen since Best Mate, with the potential to be even better. The way he left them for dead from the 2nd last in a truly run race suggests the Gold Cup distance won’t be a problem, and he has the King George on a plate.
Bring them on!
November 18, 2006 at 16:25 #31337Kauto impressive today!
Jumped well and won with plenty in hand. Looks like being a great King George if that performance hasn’t scared away the opposition.
I’d have thought Nicholls would now let Star De Mohaison take his chance in the Hennessy now he has a gilt edged opportunity of picking up the King George with Kauto Star (or is that just my ten to follow head talking)?
November 18, 2006 at 16:36 #31338KS was very good today .. 15 length winner, in what should have been a tight race.
I’d rate him on a par with an in form Kicking King. No better, no worse.
Not that good then ?
November 18, 2006 at 17:12 #31339If you rate the race around L’Ami, who is one of the best yardsticks around and very rarely fails to run to a figure close to 160, then Kauto Star has posted a figure in the high 170s without coming off the bridle.
This is the best chaser in training by a sizeable margin, and potentially the best for many years.
November 18, 2006 at 17:23 #31340I get 182 for today with a Large + or P
