Mtoto had a huge presense, one of those who knew he was a great racehorse. I’m pleased he had such a nice life, he had the roam of the paddocks at Aston Upthorpe to himself, just him and the teaser there most of the time plus the boarding mares and foals. He spent his whole life with people who really loved and understood him and it was wonderful that he lived his whole stud life in that one place. I’m sure those who worked with him there are hearbroken. But he had a good long life. I loved him and was very lucky to have known him.
He was outstanding looking, a very large perfectly formed horse. In the summer he used to get these dapples on is flanks.
His legacy lives on in his offspring …. and their offspring. But I will miss him.
Thanks everyone – good list of nice mares here to be watching. I really enjoy seeing the girls, on their own or mixing it with the boys.
[quote="cjboy Sorry if I should know this, but do you have a connection with Nicky Henderson’s yard, or the owner? It’s just that I haven’t found that news about retirement reported elsewhere??
CB
Sorry for late reply. I know the racing manager.
Interesting decision to give him more time. Not what was suggested when Aintree was taken off the cards.
I would love it if the horse could bounce back, but would hate to see him raced if he is not right.
I guess we will know more by Punchestown.

VPU has been retired. He is not sound.
I’m gutted for the horse as still think he has never been given the recognition he deserves. For some reaosn he’s just necver really been that popular. Admit he is not flashy looking or anything like that – but he always gave his all. Very genuine and tough.
He will go home to live with Sir Robert’s other horses, Marlborough and Ad Hoc.
At least he can have a retirement. And I hope he has a very long one. Will always be one of my favourite boys and his glory days remain some of my best ever racing moments.
What list are you reading from? Depends upon the bookies, some update, some do not. If it is the Racing Post, that list will not be updated now until next week.
Voy Por Ustedes will be given an entry. If he is back to his best he could run a big race at a decent price. Stable on fire.
I’d love to see him win this. Class horse on his day who has not got the recognition due him.
Does anyone know if he was put down or if he made it home?

For some reason that would not post …. and then you already had your answer! I’ll still ask to see if he remembers this jockey.
I’ll try and find out for you, I know the person who wrote the Famous Racehorses article on the horse, he might know more about him as was a big fan.
Would love to have seen that race when he beat Arkle, even though I loved Arkle. Used to be a few old timers at Wincanton who knew the horse and were there on the day. I heard tales of how magnificent the ride was and how the horse continued to respond as if he knew it was his big chance to beat the champ.
Not often that the collected wishes of all come true – so happy for all concerned that this time it did.
Fingers crossed he continues to progress and can have a very long retirement, he will be spoiled for sure.
Must say well done again to his owner for never giving up hope.
Too much loss lately. Dulcote was so beautiful and so young. We were at Ascot, just awful to see them one minute so happy, and the next, gone.
He was a much loved horse, had lots of fans, and his lass and connections adored him.
At least we have had the good news about Monet’s going home, one small blessing …..
I’m sooooo happy he goes to Sandown instead. I hope the ground will be soft for him.
I’m going, at least I can be there to cheer him on, might be his last race.

Just saw these posts, can only echo sentiments here too. THIS is what racing is all about. Or should be.
Gutted I was not there, just love him. Really pleased for him.
The yard have started a little group for him on facebook if anyone is interested. It’s full of pics of him and the lads write updates on him.
I’m not sure when/where he goes next but might run in the National. As much as I applaud keeping the old ones going I am going to have a heart attack if they send him there again.

Wow! this is a seriously long time for a horse to be off and make a comeback!
I was well impressed when Hughie Morrison managed to do it with his stayer Alcazar, and I think he was around 2-3 years off.
Welcome – look forward to reading him.
Yes, he also moved Star De Mohaison from Paul Nicholls.
I think it is just shocking (at least to me for sure) when the horse in question was so much loved by the yard they have moved him from. But he owns them and he can do what he likes with them. I don’t personally think this would include running him in a handicap again. Sir Robert very rarely attends NH meetings anymore and I reckon he would only want to if one of his were running at a high class meeting.
Finding something wrong with him does explain his poor runs, and you have to say that the horse is incredibly brave to have kept going if he was feeling something at the time.
I’d be happy if he were wrapped up safe in some green paddock, as I am so very fond of the horse. But it would also be wonderful if he could win again and finally, perhaps, get the credit he deserves.
Jeremy and Quixall Crossett – I’m not sure I see anyone telling you off for your loyalty and appreciation of a horse who took part with honour as best he could. I hope not, I too harbour many great memories of him and his connections. You don’t have to win to go racing!
I agree with Moe too, sometimes it is just grand to see some of these old horses, and winning is a bonus.
I remember some amazing scenes at Cheltenham when horses that did not win got massive receptions. On See More’s last run in the Gold Cup fans followed him all the way to the walk out area and some guys who came down from the North and called themselves, ‘the boys from the North’ shouted out to Joe Tizzard, ‘bring him back safe Joe’. These guys were hardly boys but it was harking back to their youth when they had worked in racing. They had long given up racing until one of their Grandsons decided See More was his fav horse. See More rekindled their racing enthusiasm and friendships and they followed him about.
