Former dual eclipse winner and sire of Shaamit and Presenting amongst others has died at the grand age of 28. Seems we are losing some big names this year as they get to old age with the loss of him and then of course Saddlers Wells earlier this year.
RIP old boy

Such a turn of foot and an absolute joy to watch!!!Miss you but I will always have the memories.
May 25, 2011 at 23:56 #357258Mtoto was the first horse to steal my heart in the 1980’s for his sheer bravery and determination.
The saddest thing was that he didn’t win the Arc de Triomphe having been completely boxed in with nowhere to go, he came with a wet sail to challenge Tony Bin and failed by just a neck to get the better of him.
However, he then went on to sire Shaamit who won the Derby in 1996 but who sadly died aged only 8 years old in 2001…RIP dear Mtoto
would also like to include here
Shaamit and
Alec Stewart
Mtoto’s trainer who sadly died in 2004 after a battle with cancer.Would just like to quote this poem that is the inscription that stands with a statue of Mill Reef at the National Stud, Newmarket.
Mill Reef’s statue looks over the paddock in which he used to run free, and which most recently was used by Silver Patriach another who sadly left us in 2009.MTOTO one of the greatest middle distance thoroughbreds of the 1980’s….this is for you:-
Princes, Lords, Commoners all sang my praise.
In victory or defeat I played my part.
Remember me, all men who love the Horse,
If hearts and spirits flag in after days;
Though small, I gave my all. I gave my heart."– Paul Mellon, The Gimcrack Spirit speech 1970 –
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...May 27, 2011 at 07:58 #357437Mtoto had a huge presense, one of those who knew he was a great racehorse. I’m pleased he had such a nice life, he had the roam of the paddocks at Aston Upthorpe to himself, just him and the teaser there most of the time plus the boarding mares and foals. He spent his whole life with people who really loved and understood him and it was wonderful that he lived his whole stud life in that one place. I’m sure those who worked with him there are hearbroken. But he had a good long life. I loved him and was very lucky to have known him.
He was outstanding looking, a very large perfectly formed horse. In the summer he used to get these dapples on is flanks.
His legacy lives on in his offspring …. and their offspring. But I will miss him.
