Entered in a beginners chase at Fairyhouse on Saturday for Dessie Hughes after being off the track for nearly 5 years!

His last run was when he finished a good 4th in what was the Sun Alliance Hurdle at the 2006 festival behind his then stablemate Nicanor, Denman and Refinement. He was previously 5 from 5 having won three novice hurdles, a bumper, and a p2p at Punchestown under none other than Gordon Elliot.
Anyone know of any other horses who have returned after being off the track for so long???
January 26, 2011 at 20:39 #337805Walkon and Gauvain (returning after 18 months to beat Forpadydeplasterer at Chelt in November) spring to mind.
But nothing close to Mr Nosie’s near-terminal absence. That must surely be a record of sorts?January 26, 2011 at 20:55 #337807The aforementioned Nicanor was off for a fair while himself.
Remember the annual reports that Monsignor was back in training but that particular machine never made it back to the course sadly..

I’m pretty sure Quixall Crossett’s dam, Grange Classic, didn’t run between around 1982 and 1986, as the Caines were using her to breed from inbetween (Quixall was foaled in 1985).Annoyingly, the 1985-6 page of my Caine Chronology on Quixall’s site is down at present, so I can’t give precise year, month and day tally just now
(you mean you’ve not committed it to memory? – ED)
. However, for the time being I’d call it "around four years following her run in at Hutton Rudby Adjacent Point in March 1982, and possibly more".

January 27, 2011 at 15:32 #337913Wow! this is a seriously long time for a horse to be off and make a comeback!
I was well impressed when Hughie Morrison managed to do it with his stayer Alcazar, and I think he was around 2-3 years off.

Good luck to them.
January 28, 2011 at 13:44 #338030Grange Classic’s career break confirmed now as March 27th 1982 (Hutton Rudby Adjacent Point) to April 1st 1986 (Wetherby hunter chase). Still a year shy of Nr Nosie’s, though. Winner so far!

January 28, 2011 at 18:45 #338053I’m sure there was a mare in the last 10 years or so who came back to the track after a long time off at stud – sadly I think it ended in a fatal injury. There was another who came back after having a foal who won on the flat. Unfortunately the names have gone

A couple of weeks ago, a novice chase at Huntingdon was won by Mr Gardner (first race since 20 March 2009) from Patsy Finnegan (first race since 23 March 2009), Bemused (only off for a couple of monrhs) with Platin Grounds pulled up on his first run since 5 April 2008. Pretty impressive – 4 runners and only one had run in the preceding 12 months!
January 29, 2011 at 15:54 #338230Pleasing enough run. Looked like he blew up a bit after turning in.
He still retains some ability and should pick up a race or two somewhere.
