Would look pretty poor if he didn’t do anything about it, discipline wise, surely?
I’m sure they believe they did the right thing, and that is for the trainer, the jockey, and the agent to decide, but did they have to make it into headline news as well?
Whatever he has done, it is somewhat disappointing that matters like this are aired in public.
Surely it is a matter between the individuals involved, rather than something to shout about. This lad will have suffered enough by losing his job and his agent (a MUCH bigger problem – Richard Hale represents all the top jumps riders in the North as Dave Roberts does in the South). He does not deserve to be ridiculed in public over what sounds like an employment/disciplinary matter. It wouldn’t happen in a normal business!
I actually think she will be excited. She has been a racing person for so long it isn’t just a passing fad or fancy, horses are a big part of the family life. It would indeed be a good day for racing
Ohio musicians?
Nobody has yet addressed the good fortune of those who won bets that might not have collected had Carberry not made his blunder. Should they give their winnings back?
No, of course they shouldn’t. It has nothing to do with them. What a strange question to pose.
Others gain from other peoples misfortune somewhere along the line in just about every scenario imaginable.
I’m just pointing out that the indignant postings on here are only one side of the coin.
it’s the severity of the mistake, cjboy; one error doesn’t necessarily equate to another. If Gus’s shelf-stacker dents a tin of beans then Asda will survive, but if he puts raw meat next to cooked meat at the deli counter, then he’s in serious trouble.
If someone puts raw meat next to cooked at the deli and the shop gets done I can guarantee one thing; the shop worker will NOT lose 40 days pay. It is illegal to make deductions from pay. If the shop owner fired the worker they would end up in a tribunal and lose; the shop worker would claim some sort of discrimination or say they weren’t properly trained.
I am an employer, and it’s a mugs game, the law is totally stacked in the employees favour.
In any case, in the grand scheme of things this mistake has not done what the hypothetical deli worker has done; nobody is going to die or be put in hospital. It is just one more losing bet amongst many.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Ferdy Murphy were to be sending Poker de Sivola for the Gold Cup
I wonder of those who think Carberry should be be banned for months also believe that EVERYONE who makes a mistake at work should be suspended without pay for months with no recourse to tribunals etc, etc.
This is overreaction from those who lost a few quid. The horse could have fallen or been brought down, he could have bumped into a better one on the day, no horse is a cert.
I haven’t heard from anyone who benefited by this, and there must be some.
I don’t think he did a good job that day, far from it, but it was a mistake pure and simple. Willie Twiston Davies made one too, when he asked Baby Run the impossible question at Cheltenham, but nobody wants him banned. I know of many more instances where jockey mistakes have probably cost a race, but nobody wants them banned either
Edmond Linehan was very good on Charingworth when he won the other day, he will go far
Of course I race for pleasure, but in the reasonable expectation that if I do well and pick a good horse, or even better breed a good horse, I will get a proportion of my not inconsiderable outlay back.
You follow racing, whether it be the betting or in any other way, also for your pleasure.
Your hobby will disappear unless mugs like me are prepared to subsidise it by running horses in the UK. I do that to some extent, but racing for £1500 at Wetherby? No thanks, I’ll be at Punchestown, Leoplardstown or Auteil.
If this was an Auction, Mr. Dunlop would be admitting to running a Ring, and be liable to a criminal prosecution. Interesting legal position, when the other trainers have denied it.
But it isn’t an auction, and there’s no crime or even "interesting legal position"!
Steeplechasing thinks racing will die out due to the horsemen wanting decent prize money.
It will definitely die out if there isn’t decent prize money.
I have sent 2 broodmares to France now, and the horse I was going to send to a UK trainer has gone to Ireland, where even a maiden hurdle will be worth at least two times more than the equivalent in England. The next one will be trained in France I expect. I doubt I will have any more than one horse in the UK in the next 3 or 4 years unless the prize money turns round.
I am a little man in racing, 4 or 5 in training over the jumps plus a small breeding setup of 2 or 3 mares, but I hear and see this happening a lot in my discussions with other owners, many of the much bigger than we are.
The bookies and many punters don’t care about quality racing, but without the better level there will be no future for UK racing; it cannot survive on class 5 and 6 on the all weather and selling hurdles at Wetherby. I will not be bothering with racing for £1500.
But how long can that ‘impact’ be sustained, Tuffers? Have the racecourses been squirrelling away enough to cover the demands of the Horsemen indefinitely? Or are they supposed to run themselves in to the ground so Paul Dixon and his mob can have their fill?
A few years ago "media rights income" didn’t exist. Currently Arena Leisure collect about £10 Million a year. From 2012 their deal is worth over £20 Million a year.
THATs where the money can come from.
Arena provide about 25% of all racing in the UK. If the Media Rights are pro rata for the rest of the industry that’s £80 Million a year coming to the racecourses which didn’t a few years ago. If the courses coulsd exist at the time when media rights were zero, they can afford to put a part (not all) of it into prize money.
If one looks at the total income of Levy PLUS Media Rights then Racing’s funding is not really declining in the way it’s been portrayed.
I have used Arena’s figures for the simple reason that they are easily available, no other.
Tuffers,
Can I ask where you access all this updated prize money information?
Thxs.
It’s on the BHA Racing Admin web site (think that’s owners/trainers etc only). Also texted to all trainers by the BHA
I heard an unsubstantiated rumour that all the staff had been advised they would not be required after July. Only a rumour though, not sure if it’s true, anyone else heard this?
I’m Delilah was very eyecatching today at Aintree
How could I forget Voler La Vedette – also add For Bill to the mix and Venetia Williams mare La Bombonera (whenever they decide to run her).
I read elsewhere that Tarla was injured and likely to miss at least most of this season.
La Bombonera was very disappointing in the two runs she has had, most recently at Cheltenham
Needs soft ground.
There’s a very nice Alderbrook mare at Venetia’s, Cool Cascade, that will be novice hurdling next season. Has strengthened up immeasurably since her debut bumper, has schooled exceptionally well and, once there’s a bit of juice in the ground come late September/early October, she’ll be on the course. Watch this space.
So are they persisting with La Bombonera next season then?
Barry Simpson is quoted in the press today and says the horse goes to Punchestown, so retirement doesn’t sound to be the true story.
