They just need to set their stall out from the start of the Gold Cup and make it a real test. That will play to Denman’s strengths and expose any weakness in Kauto Star’s stamina.
It would certainly maximise Denman’s chances of beating Kauto Star but it is also a scenario that would suit Exotic Dancer. McCoy seems certain to revert to the exaggerated waiting tactics which have suited Exotic Dancer so well in the past and we know how well he goes at Cheltenham. I think it’s a three-horse race and Exotic Dancer is well overpriced if there’s going to be a strong pace.
Agree with you there. Think I’m going to have a few quid on exotic Dancer now. The front two could race to beat each other and then an outsider could steal it and who better than ED.
Harchibald will get the fast pace he needs in the CH. Admittedly he needs to be ridden to perfection, but it would be hard to see him out of the first three and with some luck, he’s capable of winning it.
Wouldnt be too worried about Harchibald’s performance – he wasn’t enjoying himself on the ground and wasn’t jumping with his usual fluency. Could see that a long way out and thought that he mightnt get anywhere near the winner about half way round.
Good to soft at Cheltenham and he’ll be a different proposition. They were some way clear of the rest as well.People are under-estimating Katchit’s run at Newcastle.
He was beat by two battle hardened (not the best term to describe the winner) hurdlers and not by that far on his first run out of his novice years. He is open to improvement so should not be as easily dismissed as he has.Cian
He should have improved from Aintree to Newcastle, he didn’t and thats why he was beaten by battle hardened Al Eile and Harchibald, horses who are probably in the same league as Afsoun, Macs Joy, Straw Bear etc
I think Harchibald is better than the three mentioned – maybe Mac’s Joy at his best would have been as good as Harchibald, but I don’t think MJ is at his best anymore, whereas at least there is hope that Harchi is near his. And his form splitting HE and BI in 2005 is as good as any in this year’s race.

He could win 1m2 races but at 1m4 he was a very, very good horse.
Very hard to compare horses that have ran years apart, though. It’s the over reaction to horses which causes me to look elsewhere (and inevitably lose!). When KS was being touted as the best horse in the history of racing, then it put me off him (which is a pity as he is a very good horse) Now the same thing is happening with Denman.
When some guy on betfair is saying that he’s better than Arkle, then a part of me hopes he never wins again. A terrible thing to say, but there you go.Brilliant performance. Does anyone think that there are any holes in it?
Or is the widespread consensus that he beat very good horses?Had a hunch that Harchi would return and backed him for the CH at 30-1.
Looking pretty decent now, although Cheltenham may not see him to his best effect. He was forced to check at one point and was a little closer than he would like about 2 furlongs out.
He makes up serious ground with his jumping and travels so sweetly. If he can respond better to being pushed out and with a good ride from PC, he should be there or thereabouts come March. When ED was about a neck down from KS, according to Jim McGrath, Kauto was three lengths clear.
I noted he was hit vigorously at least 8 times in the final furlong, yet still ran on well enough without flinching, yet in the Champion Hurdle, apparently, he must not be touched.
I was just about to post that. Maybe, he is running to his best in these 2m races when on the bridle. Or maybe, he has learned the ability to not shirk matters
I’m going to make this my sole ap bet for Cheltenham.
I think I’m going to do one of my loyalty bets and back him in for the CH.
A complete long-shot, but if he is as good as he was and with the latest of late rides, he could win. I don’t really rate Sublimity as I think everything went right for him last time round. There’s not a great deal else of note and even though the bet is purely for old time’s sake if he wins a decent race, or even runs well, his price will surely contract.Kauto Star even at his tender age is a Superstar and miles bettrer than Best Mate ever was.
.
Why don’t you wait a couple of years with hindsight before saying that, because it is far from conclusive. KS has a beautiful running style in that he travels like a dream (albeit not in his last race) and then quickens. That has made him appear like a very good horse, perhaps better than he is. He hasn’t achieved as much as Best Mate and if Best Mate beat little, then KS has beaten nothing better.
Most people’s concerns about KS are to do with the way he travelled – i.e. hitting a flat spot in the middle of the race and having to be urged along the rest of the way. For a horse that won the Tingle Creek, that wasnt a great sign.
Still he should improve no end and if he had travelled alongside Monet’s up to the last and faded, we would all be lauding the run.
I’m in shock at the moment so I don’t want to make any sweeping remarks but was there any point in Kinane pushing away on him turning into the straight when he was already well beaten and 20L adrift??
Guys, there’s no point criticising a jockey – they are not aware a horse has broke down every time and clearly in this instance, Kinane wasn’t, he would not have pushed him out otherwise. To an onlooker, he didn’t run his race whereby he always travels good in the early stages, but how could anyone know that something really serious was wrong. RIP
Some of the commetns on the betfair forum are a complete and utter disgrace – it’s a good thing that this site acts as a filter to those morons.
It was a complete tragedy – it was obvious during the race that he was never travelling, which he always does. He was my favourite flat horse in training so it is a real blow. Feels like losing an equine friend.
Reet – Why would a horse that has the speed to win a Dewhurst and a Guineas lack a turn of foot to win the Derby?
I thought the same myself!
