To be fair to Gordon Elliot is still claims Death Duty was unwell at Cheltenham last March and hence didn’t run his race. To be honest I’ve always thought Death Duty looks a little one paced. That said he looks better over fem es than hurdles.
Samcro on the other hand looks something special. I think he’s in a different league to Death Duty. I backed him for the bumper last year but frustratingly he didn’t run. I managed to get on him early this year to win any race at 10-1 so feeling quite pleased with this bet at the moment. I’m not convinced we’re going to see anything better for this an Elliot seems to be aiming here with him. Here’s hoping.
I must say I’m struggling to see beyond the first two in the market here as a winner but given the odds and the uncertainty around Faugheen I think Melon might be the value bet at this point but do you think Mullins would have them line up in the same race?
Sam Spinner is certainly a unique one. I think I’d need to see him a few more times and see some more progress first. It would be good to see him repeat that performance outside of a handicap. Big margin wins when carrying a light weight on heavy ground can often be misleading. Definitely one to watch though.
A satisfactory start for L’Ami Serge at Ascot today over 2 1/2 furlongs. 2nd to Lil Rockerfellet who is a good benchmark and not given a hard race. I am happy with that as his first step of the season to the Stayers Hurdle. Defi Du Seuil was very disappointing. It will be interesting to see what Hobbs says after that flat performance.
Given Yanworth is struggling to adapt to fences I think there’s every chance he could revert to Hurdles. I think his battling qualities would lend themselves well to 3m. I’ve had a few pounds on Nicky Henderson’s L’Ami Serge. 3 miles seems to be his trip as a good result in Auteuil in a grade 1, last time out, would seem to suggest. Henderson has confirmed this as his target so he’s definitely one to watch. Currently 16-1.
Just in case you haven’t noticed Willie Mullins, in his stable tour, has said Great Field is injured and might be back some time in the spring.
I don’t know about you guys but I can’t wait to see a fit Ar Mad put it up to Douvan, Altior et al. If he’s fit and firing then he will take some beating. Looking forward to seeing if he’s back to his best in the Tingle Creek after a poor reappearance at Exeter.
Just noticed that the time recorded by both Faugheen and Buveur D’Air in winning their respective Champion Hurdles, according to the racing post, is exactly the same at 3m 50.9 Seconds. How strange! I agree with the comments about Faugheen even making it to the festival. If he gets there fit he goes off favourite but that’s a big if.
Has anyone heard anything about Robin Roe, trained by Dan Skelton. I really liked him last year but since his injury I haven’t heard anything. He isn’t even featured in Dan Skelton’s stable tour on the Ladbrokes website.
If anyone fancies an alternative to Apples Shakira then take a look at Mitchouka. He’s been really impressive on his last two starts and at 16-1 looks good value versus the 5-1 for Apples Shakira. Owned by Gigginstown, trained by Gordon Elliott.
