Gumball 25/1
I was really taken by his two efforts for Phillip Hobbs this season. Another French import for him, and he has a nice profile being a son of No Risk At All, who was a multiple Group level winner and placed in a Group 1 on the flat in France.
Absolutely destroyed the field by 31l on debut, jumping with fluidity and looking like an exciting prospect all over.
He notched his second consecutive success yesterday at Chepstow but it wasn’t all plain sailing. He was far more disorganised with his jumping this time, but he had the engine underneath to get straight back on the bridle, and in the end he won impressively by 8l.
He has a very similar to profile to Defi Du Seuil, a French import, jumping a bit wayward, but clearly has a big engine. Like Defi, Hobbs has him out early in the season presumably to get him some easy race experience, leaving him plenty of time to iron out his jumping. Race experience is something that can prove vital to these juveniles in my opinion, looking at Charli Parcs last year he had all the talent in the world but just was far too green going into a big race environment.
I think he’s a good bet for Hobbs to land the Triumph two years in a row.
October 18, 2017 at 15:01 #1322129Jp french juveniles.
Demopolis (hobbs)
Melody of scotland (Alan king)
Apple’s shakira (nj henderson)
Empreinte reconse (tizzard)
Espoir d’allen (Gavin cromwell)Plus exemplar etc… from obrien
The first one of jps out,
And Espoir d’allen won very nicely today, don’t think he beat much but Geraghty was looking around him when still on the bridle.
Another reminder that after last year, not all of the juveniles are guaranteed to go for this race. But unlike last year, jp definitely has some live ones for the novice hurdles this year, so hopefully imo, juveniles will stay to there division.November 17, 2017 at 17:35 #1327138Gumball takes on Apples Shakira in the first at Cheltenham, in an what should be an early season cracker. I guess we’ll know a lot more about the state of the Triumph after tomorrow’s race. Little between the two in the betting, Gumball 1/1 and Shakira 6/4, but I have a feeling the Henderson filly will be backed into favouritism before the off, given her pedigree and connections. According to Oddschecker she is the better backed of the two, but given that we don’t know the size of the sample pool I never fully trust that data.
She was impressive on her sole start in France over hurdles, and no doubt Nicky will have brought out some further improvement in her. Apparently she is “working well at home, without setting the world alight,” but apparently Apples Jade never worked that well at home either. There is still 20/1 available on the JP filly for the Triumph and I think it could be shrewd to take that before tomorrow, because whoever wins will be a much shorter priced favourite. Gumball is a general 12/1 shot now, and to me that is quite short. There is another JP horse for Gavin Cromwell called Espoir D’Allen, who has been most impressive in Ireland so far. Still plenty more to come out of the woodwork too I imagine.
Apples Shakira 20/1 for the Triumph.
November 18, 2017 at 12:57 #1327366Pretty damn impressive from Apple’s Shakira. Race turned into a slog admittedly but the Triumph course is always a test for a juvenile hurdler.
We’ve gone 5/1 – looks like the best seen so far.
November 18, 2017 at 15:38 #1327441If anyone fancies an alternative to Apples Shakira then take a look at Mitchouka. He’s been really impressive on his last two starts and at 16-1 looks good value versus the 5-1 for Apples Shakira. Owned by Gigginstown, trained by Gordon Elliott.
November 18, 2017 at 17:07 #1327466Always nice when things go as planned.
Very impressive performance form Shakira today. As LS mentioned the poor conditions resulting in a slog fest may have flattered her, but there’s no doubting she will get up the hill. Gumball actually jumped quite fluently today as far as I can remember, so that marks up her performance even more for me.
I agree with you CNC, Mitchouka is a gorgeous looking horse who has done nothing but improve with each run. Plenty more promising JP horses to come as well, looks like it could be a strong renewal at this early stage.
December 2, 2017 at 23:13 #1330095Mitchouka takes on Espoir D’Allen tomorrow at Fairyhouse. I think that could be some race and a real insight into the Triumph. Both really nice horses.
December 17, 2017 at 14:30 #1332644If people haven’t yet see Stormy Ireland’s performance yesterday at Fairyhouse where he won by 58 lengths it is well worth watching. I don’t think I’ve seen anything like that in a long time. This race is warming up nicely. That might give Apples Shakira something to think about.
December 17, 2017 at 15:08 #1332655I think JP might be tempted with the Supreme for her, unless something else steps forward markedly on what we’ve seen to date.
She’d stand a great chance off 10-6What impressed me most about Stormy Ireland was that, after setting a decent pace from the off on one of the stiffest tracks in the sport, she jumped the last like it was the first. If she’s a likely starter for the Triumph then 20-1 looks massive.
December 18, 2017 at 13:42 #1332801JP had Charlie Parcs and Defi de Seuil who would have received the 4 year old allowance and he didn’t go to The Supreme with either of them so I cant see them doing it with Apples Shakira. never say never but I fully expect her to go for the Triumph
December 19, 2017 at 03:25 #1332924Apples Shakira is a cracking bet @ 7/2 I think.
Missed the fancy prices in this thread (fair play lads) but I’m suprised she’s 7/2. That’s a big price in my book.
December 19, 2017 at 09:16 #1332951I’d take 10/1 on Espoir D’allen over 7/2 on Apple’s Shakira any day of the week. Apples Shakira looks solid, but I have been very impressed with Espoir D’allen’s form. Mitchouka is a very smart prospect who Espoir D’allen dispatched with ease. Famous Milly’s listed win at Aintree boosts the form further, and I just think at this early stage 10/1 is big.
December 19, 2017 at 09:29 #1332953Agree with Charlie87, he looks good alright.
Whilst i probably said this last year about DDS, is it worth really taking 7/2 right now, when plenty still have to come out? DDS went off 5/2 how much shorter can she be?
Joey obrien normally has a raft of 3yos to come out, and that i remember, not many have come out just yet….we are likely to see one or two from Mullins, including stormy ireland from the weekend.
Would have the 7/2 down as not worth risking for me…

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!January 12, 2018 at 15:23 #1337031Apples Shakira fans worried by Gumball’s disappointing run at Huntington this afternoon?
January 12, 2018 at 16:17 #1337033More disappointed with Style de Garde to be honest. I think SdG and Gumball may have cut each others throats going at it the way they did from a long way out, setting it up for the late closers.
No reason for Apples Shakira to be overly worried yet, she beat Gumball by 17 lengths whilst he was only beaten today by 5. But I think if we ran that race again we’d have a different result.
January 12, 2018 at 16:53 #1337037Not in the slightest. Epspoir Dallen is the only danger to my filly
As Triumph Hurdles go, best in years this years I think. Hendo and JP have some fantastic juveniles in their ranks.
January 12, 2018 at 17:07 #1337038triumph hurdle is generally a very open race- you’d have to say the winner has earned it’s place at cheltenham at least. Impressed with the way it picked up which bodes well for Cheltenham with the stiff finish they use for that new course.
could be a reasonable each-way bet assuming it does of course go for the race. couldn’t really have picked it out as the winner beforehand and you could argue the front two in the market cut each others throats but it’s probably more than an unexposed type improved past them. gumball should be renamed screwball or something lol.
then again as that result showed you should be careful backing favourites in four year old hurdle races and no doubt connections have a much better understanding of where they stand than the humble punter
