Off topic slightly, but I too favour Kauto over Denman (and have been lucky enough to meet both on several occasions).
I think Kauto at his best will give Denman a race in the GC, provided the ground is decent. I do wish Harry Findlay would be more sporting and be prepared to take on Kauto on his terms (i.e. 3m, sharper track). Not this year I know owing to Denman’s heart problem, but it was never on the agenda anyway, and should have been imo.
I’d be surprised if they met then. Tidal Bay’s stated objective is the Tingle Creek, and Noland looks sure to go for the Peterborough.
The only reason Howard Johnson would have for not running in the Tingle Creek is to avoid Master Minded, and given he’s been so ebullient about the horse, this seems unlikely (imo).
Given that Noland ran third to Tidal Bay in the Arkle, and is supposed to have improved since, it’s not that surprising that connections might take Tidal Bay on again.
Not saying that he would win, as Tidal Bay has probably improved too, but Noland has nothing to be afraid of, other than running an honourable second.
If people weren’t prepared to run horses in races they might lose, we wouldn’t have a sport. Denman, for example, would walk over in the 2009 Gold Cup…
PS – which race is the supposed TB/Noland clash due to occur?
Looks like it’ll be quite good once you get used to it.
I know we’ll have to pay for some bits, but I’ve always been surprised it’s for free anyway.
An excellent performance, especially given that connections had stated that he wasn’t quite tuned up.
Looks tailor-made for Peterborough Chase followed by Ryanair Chase.
Well done to all concerned.
Thanks David. What an excellent article – exactly the sort of info I was looking for when I posted the topic, and the informed and considered response sums up why this forum is the best of its kind.
Thanks again.
Natalia Gemelova and Kirsty Milczarek are the best, but the lady jockeys in general are a pretty uninspiring bunch, looks-wise.
I used to hate him, and he is an annoying twat, but recently I’ve realised that it’s all massively tongue in cheek and started to enjoy it.
He is very knowledgeable, despite the act.
Thanks chaps.
Another Nicholls inmate I am looking forward to seeing this year is Nevada Royale. Things didn’t exactly pan out for him last year, but he looks to have huge potential. I saw him canter all over an Intermediate Point-to-Point field at Charlton Horethorne 2 seasons ago, in a time faster than the open race. He didn’t come off the bridle, and I thought then that he could be a future Gold Cup horse.
Perhaps now the Breeders’ Cup is out of the way, we can get on to the real business of the jumps season.
I notice that PFN had his stable tour in the Post yesterday (missed it unfortunately), I wonder what he nominated as his no. 1 for the PP?
Noland perhaps? The race is normally won by a classy sort nowadays, so he could be an ideal type for it. Would be great to see the Hales family win it too, following Granit Jack’s untimely departure last year.
Any thoughts?
It’s not absurd to suggest it – he has never run over the distance, so any doubts are legit.
I don’t share them, however: I think he’d win pretty much any 3m+ race you put him in.
Hope it’s OK to join in.
Voy Pos Ustedes, 2pts win
20:35 Indian Blessing (Res Ventura)
21:15 Laragh (Res Sugar Mom)
21:55 Stardom Bound (Res Sky Diva)
22:35 Wait a While (Res Halfway to Heaven)
23:15 Zenyatta (Res Cocoa Beach)Any news on the horse’s wellbeing? All I saw was the RP text commentary describing it as a terrible incident.
I’ll second that. Glad connections have finally given up – very sad to see these old stars persisted with when they’re no longer enjoying themselves.
Best of luck to the old boy hunting or whatever he ends up doing.
It might not be a massive generator of betting turnover Barry, but it is of extreme interest to genuine racing fans, punting or non-punting.
It will be fascinating to see how the Europeans get on this year, and nobody could say that the BC performances of Arazi, Miesque, Ouija Board (the list could go on) haven’t captured the racing public’s imagination long-term.
I am very much looking forward to it (and will be having a bet too).
Agreed, since Red Rocks will probably be suited by more normal conditions than last year, and is admirably consistent at this level.
