Pithily put. That’s why I’m surprised at the amount of nit-picking post mortems about media coverage and individuals on this Forum.
Really, if a person isn’t going to warm to such a glorious event, I wonder what on earth they
would
warm to?
Quite right.
I thought it was a great race but it’s been described on here as a weak one. And well, I heard that last year too. And the winner won the Arc!
On ‘that’ celebration, it was just so absurd & unusual that it bothered me a little bit less that Treasure Beach didn’t make it to the line in front. And it made me laugh.
… amazingly, he is also looking up to the stands and in the opposite direction to Treasure Beach … Can it be possible that he really didn’t see him and thought once he’d passed the Royal colours he was home and dry ? … If so, then he’s even luckier than I originally thought !!
In private you have to think that Fabre would have given him a real dressing down, Derby winner or not.
Considering the number of people in the centre course, could it be there’s a big screen over there? Maybe he saw himself on that.
I believe he is from Corsica or some such place. Is that part of France? Geography is not my strong suit.He certainly rode like the little guy(Nap.)
It certainly is part of France. When he starts riding with one arm round he waist, we need to worry!
Sorry to sound like a misery guts but I hated the celebration and would have just loved it had Treasure Beach snatched victory.
I’d have loved it too. For different reasons.
A cocky Frenchman though. Will wonders ever cease?!
I can’t argue with the number of meetings as evidenced from me last year.
But Donny racegoers are well known for fancying a drink, a 1m4f race at 3.55 could have quite easily been moved to ten past.
Mikael Barzalona

He can’t have known where the winning line was, bless him.
Unbelievable. The kid must be destined for the greatest career ever if he can win a derby in
that
fashion on his first attempt! Flashy, eh?!
Reminded me of Usain Bolt at the Olympics. Celebrating before the line & breaking the World Record in the process. He’s either cocky or misjudged the line. Either way, I’m having that finish put on a poster.
Even though I’m gutted, gutted, gutted. I’d been tipping up Treasure Beach e.w for two weeks.
For me, the best horse won though.
You would have thought the BBC would have loved that. No overtaking up front. Mind you it didn’t go on for about two hours and a million laps.
Seriously, I think this is a bigger story than the race itself. Sorry for anyone who set their video and expected to see the racing. The racecourses should wise up and remove the crown jewels from the BBC.
I honestly think today was worse for tennis fans than for racing fans. I mean at least we got to see the races from start to finish, vast portions of Murray/Nadal would have been absent from any tennis fan’s Sky+
It’s almost a shame that the Oaks didn’t start at bang on the same time as the last game of the match. That would’ve shown up the BBC big time.
I can just see Rod Street formulating a press release right now by the way: ‘the BBC have assured us we will get complete coverage if we run the Oaks on a Sunday’
Tennis was on BBC2
and
the red button anthony. I griped at the red button saying ‘live tennis’ was on there when it was already on BBC2. Anyone not knowing Epsom was being covered would have just assumed there was no racing on the red button and just settled for the 5min slots spliced into the Murray match.
The coverage was actually OK for anyone who figured out it was there
It really is garbage isn’t it? I’ve just sent a Tweet to the only three BBC people I know & I hope to have accurately covered it:
‘Racing & tennis fans both sick of BBC’s half hearted sports coverage.’
I thought today’s coverage on BBC2 was excellent – no Little & Large knockabout, no fat (ex?) bookie, no ex snooker player,
no the Asian fella (don’t know his name)
, no that tall bloke, no parade ring (waste of time for me I haven’t a clue what I’m looking at)…..
….just horses going in the stalls, the race and then back to watch the miserable scot lose again

Are you referring to Richie Persad? He’s Trinidadian yer racist!
Parrot was there but not Wiltshire (At least I don’t think he was there) but sadly Willie Carson was there.I have to admit I quite enjoyed the coverage too (although I’ve not seen all of it yet) but that doesn’t mean the BBC should get away with it!
One final thought however, I wonder if you added up all the time the BBC showed the tennis instead of racing & then added up how much time lost with adverts Channel 4 has on their racing coverage, which would be the higher. I’ve a feeling it would be the Beeb but not my much.
So because he wins a Classic he instantly becomes good? All jockeys are capable of putting in good rides and he does put in good rides occasionally, just like Jamie Spencer does. I’d just rather they weren’t on horses I back.
No, but I don’t think consistently bad jockeys get rides in Classics either (or if they do they shouldn’t)
I can’t really be reasonable on this subject because I don’t often back horses with AP McCoy on them for the same reason you avoid Buick. And how wrong am I on that?!
Was the tennis on red button too? I’ve been at work all day so I had to Sky+ the racing but the coverage I’m watching seems to suggest that the racing was on the red button but the tennis was BBC2 only. Which would REALLY annoy tennis fans.
Either way, I’d go further than saying the BBC should have their racing coverage taken off them, I’d take all sports coverage away from them & live music coverage too. They think the red button is the holy grail.
This is nothing new though, I remember the uproar when Channel 4 used to skip to the racing from the 2005 Ashes tests. They had the cricket on Film4 which even less people had then than have Red Button now.
Anyway, the BBC today have managed to upset racing fans & tennis fans. I’m half surprised they haven’t shown a montage of Jim Davidson’s greatest hits then they’ll have upset everyone.
By the way Max, the reason the BBC feel it appropriate to send three presenters & a load of backroom staff to foreign climbs every second weekend is because a) They don’t broadcast exclusively to a British audience (money) & b) F1 is on a Sunday afternoon when everyone can watch it. If they had the races on a Friday afternoon, they’d be watched by four old biddies waiting for Bargain Hunt.
Tuffers , good point , but in reality 7 years is too late , a number of courses will have closed by then , racing will have lost its market niche even further, it needs to be now …and I mean tomorrow
What we are looking at is the revolt of courses to the horsemans tariff, a whole raft of low grade racing , resulting in further loss of confidence in punter wagering, with the bookies dictating what is run and where we see it
Today the bookies rule racing , its been coming , and now its here
A sad day indeed
Ricky
What does racecourses closing mean? Less racing I would’ve thought. And isn’t that what people wanted all along?
Unless you use the Tote exclusively, you’re complicit in the levy drying up from bookmakers who pay very little & exchanges who pay even less.
I’m sure there are alot of tears about this sale… crocodile tears.
I don’t see any difference between the summer dross on the all weather & the summer dross on the turf nor the summer dross over jumps for that matter.
I agree with the poster above who considers AW to be just another ground condition.
Didn’t he ride the St Leger winner last year?
I mean seriously, what a rubbish jockey.
What a load of twaddle this thread is ….it must be May madness uncovered
Has Roy gone yet ……….?
has Fred got the Tote yet ?
have Betfair once again trumped the useless Bha ?
Has the begging bowl got bigger all of a sudden ?
Get real folks
Ricky
get real folks
Which reminds me, a hearty pat on the back to everyone at The Racing Forum for giving miserable gits such as the above as much chance to spout their usual drivel as I have to spout my usual drivel.
If the sport depresses you so, take up knitting.
Scahill misses a hell of alot in races but I like his commentary when I’ve got nothing riding on it!
The other side of the coin, one who gets criticised but I’m a big fan of…
Derek Thompson. He adds a bit of colour to some of the lower grade fayre. The last time I heard him was on a Southwell evening jumps meeting & the whole card was worth peanuts but it was peanuts enjoyable to watch.
All the jockeys who even at the top of the profession still turn up at lesser tracks to ride no mark horses.
