Very talented rider and great performance but what a plonker.
Stand up, take your clothes off, whip your backside….whatever you like AFTER THE LINE. To start celebrating before the race is won is complete and total lunacy.
June 4, 2011 at 18:28 #358926Sorry to sound like a misery guts but I hated the celebration and would have just loved it had Treasure Beach snatched victory.
June 4, 2011 at 18:55 #358931You’re right, that is a pretty miserable thing to say Canford.
It would have been a terrible reverse for the guy to have follow him around if he had been beaten.
June 4, 2011 at 19:18 #358936Stunning display of brilliance or arrogance maybe both , one thing for sure , he will be Godolphin number 1 in a few years
Best horse won , and gave the race a bit of drama , well done to all
Ricky

I’d have loved it too. For different reasons.
A cocky Frenchman though. Will wonders ever cease?!
June 4, 2011 at 20:45 #358946I believe he is from Corsica or some such place. Is that part of France? Geography is not my strong suit.He certainly rode like the little guy(Nap.)

It certainly is part of France. When he starts riding with one arm round he waist, we need to worry!
June 4, 2011 at 21:43 #358952Spot on, Tuffers … if you watch the finish frame by frame he is clearly a good neck down when the arm starts to come up in celebration … amazingly, he is also looking up to the stands and in the opposite direction to Treasure Beach … Can it be possible that he really didn’t see him and thought once he’d passed the Royal colours he was home and dry ? … If so, then he’s even luckier than I originally thought !!
In private you have to think that Fabre would have given him a real dressing down, Derby winner or not.

Considering the number of people in the centre course, could it be there’s a big screen over there? Maybe he saw himself on that.

Hypothetically speaking, if he had fallen off the horse just as he was crossing the line would it still be counted as the winner?
So long as his weight was still in the saddle on the line he would be declared the winner, though it was a bit of stupidity to take the risk in such a race.I have a brother in law whose stirrup iron broke before the half furlong or so,he still won as he was hanging over the horses neck as they past the post, the pic is in ‘Millers Guide’.
June 4, 2011 at 22:38 #358958The stewards did have a "quiet word" with him about his celebrations (as well as giving him a one day ban for his whip usage)
I have to confess I am not normally a fan of those type of celebrations and it could so easily have blown up in his face but he is young and, although it is now a very long time ago now in my case, I recall youth does bring its exuberance and feelings of invincibility.
When asked about the celebration in the post race press conference he did look a little contrite and embarrassed.

His family are Corsican though he was actually born in Chateaurenard, a few miles to the south of Avignon.

Yes hopefully he will learn to leave it until he passes the post next time, and i should have said,so long as he still has weight bearing contact with the horse and is not touching the ground he would still be declared the winner.
June 4, 2011 at 23:03 #358964Got the wretched beast home in front through excessive use of the whip – brilliant. Did admire his confidence though.

Seeing as you’ve mentioned it, the fact that Barzelona’s whip usage did not strike anyone watching live as remotely excessive, until the stewards did a leisurely countback during a replay, makes the rule look singularly stupid. Yet again.
Drawing attention to something which nobody thought was wrong or bad will produce yet another round of smear headlines.
Shoot … foot … fuel … Animal Aid …
yet again.
June 4, 2011 at 23:18 #358969An absolutely terrific Derby won fairly, by the best horse, trained by a genius, and ridden by the best energing talent world horse racing has seen since Frankie Dettori. A simple and engaging story.

Pithily put. That’s why I’m surprised at the amount of nit-picking post mortems about media coverage and individuals on this Forum.
Really, if a person isn’t going to warm to such a glorious event, I wonder what on earth they
would
warm to?
