The BEEB are reporting that Betfred have bought the Tote. Another own goal by racing.
Cue further wailing and gnashing of teeth…
June 3, 2011 at 09:47 #358546Tuffers. bad news indeed , but a slight glimmer of hope , this should pre empt the demise of Mr Roy , things can only get better after his departure imo
Ricky
ps , the biggest own goal ever scored by racing , not to buy the tote , the entire board of the BHA should be in shame , a disaster , and the final nail in the coffin , the begging bowl, is now in play …..

The glimmer of hope for me, Ricky, is that he’s only been given 7 more years of exclusivity and hopefully that will give racing (and the racecourses in particular) enough time to develop a strategy for providing their own on course Tote offering if Betfred doesn’t strike an appropriate commercial deal with them going forward.
June 3, 2011 at 11:18 #358567There is going to be an item on Radio 4 between 12:00 – 13:00 on the programme "You & Yours" about the sale.
Also, there is going to be an item on "World At One" on Radio 4

June 3, 2011 at 11:44 #358574baldfred has no interest in racing has two shops in newmarket its derby week and they are promoting fobt comp in the windows of both shops
you could’nt make it up
June 3, 2011 at 12:19 #358580Tuffers , good point , but in reality 7 years is too late , a number of courses will have closed by then , racing will have lost its market niche even further, it needs to be now …and I mean tomorrow
What we are looking at is the revolt of courses to the horsemans tariff, a whole raft of low grade racing , resulting in further loss of confidence in punter wagering, with the bookies dictating what is run and where we see it
Today the bookies rule racing , its been coming , and now its here
A sad day indeed

June 3, 2011 at 16:13 #358651It was a sad day in 1961, Ricky. Today is just more of the same tears.
Next crisis: Yu deciding to take Betfair offshore.
Sooner or later, a King will come, Rickster. You know it and I do…a King always comes.
June 3, 2011 at 16:48 #358658Unless you use the Tote exclusively, you’re complicit in the levy drying up from bookmakers who pay very little & exchanges who pay even less.
I’m sure there are alot of tears about this sale… crocodile tears.

What does racecourses closing mean? Less racing I would’ve thought. And isn’t that what people wanted all along?
