Eminent not looking a happy horse on that track perhaps he should have taken a leaf out of Frankuus’s book and refused to race..Lots of punters money lost but truly it wasn’t a race to risk if you knew the horse….Jac
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...May 11, 2018 at 15:02 #1353606I have to give props to Weaver & Harvey on ITV as Weaver said he was concerned that he looked on the tubby side in the paddock and down at the start Harvey stated that he was blowing a lot more the you would usually expect a horse to do.
Wouldn’t have thought that Meade would have been that far off with gauging the horses fitness before his first run of the season (he was very bullish beforehand) so just hoping that he had an off day as he looked in trouble too far out for for fitness to be the reason.
May 11, 2018 at 16:10 #1353608I think you got it spot on earlier in the week LD. He was never happy on that track. I worry that the horse is not mentally right either. This isn’t the first time he has been disappointing. One to tread warily with I think…..

May 11, 2018 at 16:25 #1353610Have the feeling he might need to go on overseas to try and get the elusive G1 win as I don’t see him being any match for Cracksman who he will likely butt heads with over 10F over here – it will be interesting to see if they also look at any 12F races as some of those in Europe can be a lot easier to win.
May 11, 2018 at 18:48 #1353621“The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of EMINENT (IRE), which started favourite and finished fifth of five, during routine testing, revealed the colt to have a fibrillating heart”
May 11, 2018 at 18:56 #1353623Thank goodness he’s okay and wasn’t given a hard race Tonge, such a shame on his first race back, looks like he’ll be off for a while now if not retired to stud..wish him well
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...May 11, 2018 at 19:36 #1353625At least we have an explanation and he can get the treatment to sort the issue out.
Not sure what the timescales are for these type of things (wasn’t this what Sprinter Sacre had?) but you would have to believe that we might have seen the last of him on the track unless the owner is prepared to give Meade the time to bring him back.
May 11, 2018 at 22:39 #1353641This is indeed the same (relatively common) condition that both Sprinter and Denman were successfully treated for – and it is seemingly pretty common in all sorts of performance horses, including TBs. Sprinter ‘reverted’ pretty quickly on his own; Denman – if I recall correctly – needed the drugs treatment. Sprinter was off the track for a year, and then took from January 2015 through to the start of the 2015/16 NH season to come back to somewhere near the racehorse he once had been. Denman similarly returned to the track (I think in about 6 months), but, whilst he ran well in that year’s GC, it took him to the Hennessy of the following autumn to produce a ‘Tank’ performance. If these two are anything to go by, it’s questionable whether Eminent would be back to the same level inside a year.
Interesting that folk were saying that about his breathing at the start – that is one of the key symptoms and suggests the problem was there before the start of the race. I didn’t see the footage, but reading this I am slightly surprised that he was allowed to start. Although he was eased down, racing with this will surely not have been a good experience for him and I would expect it will have left a mental scar. Sprinter was pulled up immediately Geraghty realised something was seriously amiss with the horse.
Perhaps the biggest question is over his longer term future. It’s bad enough when the horses affected are geldings, but this one isn’t – and he has ‘the Frankel factor’ attached. From what I’ve been able to find out, there is some evidence to suggest that the condition is hereditary in horses:

May 12, 2018 at 08:56 #1353676Having read that Titus I’m so thankful that he is still with us and can be treated but sadly I think we will not see him on a racecourse again as flat horses don’t have time on their side to recover from these conditions.
As far as I know Sir Peter Vela, his owner, is a very patient owner, Eminent was not highly tried both as a 2 and 3 year old and I’m sure will be given the best possible care and rehabilitation.
The worry thing is that seeing that his condition pre race was so obvious, and looking at it again he was blowing quite hard after a light canter to post, so why was this not spotted by the racecourse vet and the horse taken to one side for examination before he ran, there were only 6 runners to cast an eye over. We could have lost him yesterday and as Titus said what damage has this done mentally.
Dear Eminent had such potential I can’t help feeling he has been let down here and wish him well in his recovery.
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...May 12, 2018 at 10:47 #1353697Yes, exactly my thoughts. If the TV pundits could spot that the horse wasn’t right, why did the vet allow him to run? So much for “horse comes first”.
May 12, 2018 at 12:48 #1353725I watched the race live, when the TV punters said he shouldn’t be blowing that hard at the stalls, i saw that he was. It was extremely lucky he did not have a heart attack. I agree with you Jac, he was badly let down. i only hope he can recover from this even if it means he does not race again.
The only highlight of the day was GANAYEM winning easily at Nottingham. She had some decent horses behind her

All comers, all ground, all beaten
May 12, 2018 at 13:22 #1353738I also think that if one of his regular jockeys had been on board like Jim Crowley he would probably have noticed the difference in the horse after his canter to start, Oisin Murphy was on board for the first time and probably would have thought it was in his nature, but that aside it shouldn’t be left to the jockeys to make these decisions that’s why the racecourse vet is there to spot horses in distress, not state the bl@@ding obvious after the race.

On a lighter note Chaos ….
Thanks to Joni I also backed Ganayem yesterday, he had read a promising Stable Tours review about her.
Loved the way she kept on and pulled away at the finish. JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...May 12, 2018 at 13:37 #1353745Looks like Herculean could be running either at Newmarket or Newbury on Friday – currently Kieran Shoemark is jocked up for him at Newbury in the 3:40 so it would seem that is the most likely place we will see him at.
There are potentially a lot of other Frankel’s that could be out in the next week with the likes of Mori, Surya, Sun Maiden, Crystal King, Francophilia, Guild, Count Octave, Silver Quartz & Wadilsafa all being given entries (only Mori, Guild & Count Octave currently have jockey bookings for them though).
May 12, 2018 at 14:59 #1353762Absolutely thrilled with that run from Mirage Dancer. He’ll come on a lot for that and I hope he would be another for Royal Ascot. Possibly The Hardwick..

May 12, 2018 at 14:59 #1353763Mirage Dancer ran a great race considering how much energy he must have wasted with how hard he pulled for the first couple of furlongs.
If they can teach him to settle better in the early stages, Stoute could have another classic older horse that he does so well with to go to war in the big middle distance races this season.
May 12, 2018 at 16:06 #1353772Thought he was going to get up there for a moment..what an improvement
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...May 12, 2018 at 16:07 #1353773Pleased you were on Ganayem Jac, seems i must have upset Joni in a past life lol.
La Figlia ran a disappointing race, just goes to show 1.8 million euros does not guarantee success.
