The POPULATION has grown 30% since 1952 – For every one person there was back then there are now 1.3 and the little guy is annoying!

A lot of the green spaces have gone too.

The surfeit of voices leads to more argument and discontent on this sceptered Isle and land of Kings and castles.

The irony of the sad passing of Her Maj is it will actually give the Monarchy a boost in terms of popularity.
Peeps of all ages are actually witnessing the pomp and ceremony, the traditions associated with the monarchy, in its finest.
Why would we want to ditch it in favour of a presidency or similar?
A President Blair or Cameron or the worst of the lot, a President Sadiq Khan  . It would be time to emigrate if that happened.

Maybe Truss will pull a fast one and tell Sturgeon she can have her Inde Ref, in 4 weeks time. Yes to Inde 40%, NO 60%. Nailed on :good:

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the whole spectacle of it as viewed on my menace which has stood up to attention.
I do admit there is a lot of green up there Ground. I spent a nice holiday in Torridon on the west coast about thirty years ago when it was less cramped. One day I walked through the mountains and saw no people – just the one sheep. The weather wasn’t great though – one day of sun – thirteen of drizzle but it can be like that on the west coast and a doctor I saw for a sniffle told me a lot suffered from depression largely down to the weather.
Yes republicans are biting their lips on this – and yes I do think it may have given a boost to the royals’ popularity. I think it has all been rather unifying. I have just heard someone say that Charles has got big boots to fill.

What would be so awful about having any of them or similar as a President that it would be time to emigrate? I can’t see them having any powers that a PM doesn’t.

As for popularity, Charles will get his honeymoon period which may even last quite a while. His environmental views are however probably not that popular with many traditional monarchists for example. He can’t just pretend he’s neutral now. He’s going to have to things differently than we are used to, how it will go down remains to be seen.

As I said earlier in Camilla is going to be very important buffer to Charles , William and Kate will do there bit , also seems Harry is being tempted back to the fold , Charles knows he has a new job and can’t comment on certain subjects now

The total Sovereign Grant for 2021 to 2022 stood at £86.3million and is comprised of a core grant of £51.8million and an additional £34.5million for the reservicing of Buckingham Palace.

The Sovereign Grant is currently benefitting from a 10-year uplift to help fund the restoration of the Palace, which is undergoing extensive electrical and structural renovation.

14.6 million was taken from the reserve fund (a lot because only 1.2 mill last year) which brought the total to the 100 million mark.

I am not a declared royalist and do understand the republican view – but I possibly now lean a little to the royalists. I think it does bring a surplus revenue over cost. A lot of visitors come because the monarchy lives and is rather unique not many would come to view furniture filled castles. I would keep the monarchy and keep it under review.
Obviously watching the BBC over the last few days one has shown me a lot of seemingly genuine love for the monarchy – I don’t think many are pretending – well it’s love for the Queen which is not exactly the monarchy. They haven’t interviewed any angries – so maybe I have been brainwashed.

( Sorry Ground I rather trumped your post there – I am ever so umble and sincerely sorry )

BBC: “Prince William and his wife Catherine were named the Prince and Princess of Wales by King Charles III on Friday. In a phone call with Wales’ first minister, the prince is said to have acknowledged his and the princess’s deep affection for Wales.”

    Since when?

    Friday?

After three and a half days mourning a 96 year old national treasure, we finally have a non-news programme on BBC1. A nature documentary narrated by a 96 year old national treasure.

Good move by the Beeb, a suitably Mail-proof start of the transition back to normal programming.

Yes, they are overdoing it, but it’s called respect and some will criticise them for not covering a historic event if they didn’t.

You've got to accentuate the positive.
    Eliminate the negative.
    Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.

You call it respect if you want to – I call it something else.

I doubt I will switch the TV on again until after the funeral.

I much enjoyed looking over the extensive grounds of Balmoral and seeing the beautiful scenery and all the cows, bulls, ponies, horses and deer – particularly the antlered monarch of the glen that stretch their legs there – and for the first time in my life. Glamis castle was another treat and to take in the 20 square miles of peaceful green retreat that surrounds. Fascinating too to see the 100 little lodges you can stay in for free – built into the highlands as a haven against quickly worsening weather.
Yes I saw Attenborough too continuing the nature programmes. I feel a bit overcooked with TV so only watched the first ten minutes. I may look at the rest now on player.
The media want and need the monarchy, and they are a hugely powerful force and pressure group and influencers so that is everything decided for us really. The Queen will take over this week but possibly with lessening content. I’ve enjoyed watching the three day programme.
Aside from the monarchy I am considering my own relevance on a forum where I feel fraudulent posting on the main section. It is called the Racing forum after all, and in truth – I certainly have fine memories, but could not describe myself as a racing enthusiast. I do want to return to the sport of Kings when time allows.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand why the BBC does it and in fairness the other channels returned to normal fairly quickly, as did most other broadcasters.

I think they’ve done about as well as they could have in the circumstances.
