Don’t think so, Graham.
How much could you charge the public to enter without causing uproar? A tenner? Twenty quid?
Even if it’s the latter, you’d need a hell of a lot of visitors to match the ten grand plus tourists would pay each night for one room. Even smaller rooms in the palaces would be, at a guess, five grand a night. And as for the Queen’s own quarters? People would pay a million a night to stay there.
And there’d be a never ending stream of rich tourists, whereas members of the public would go once and that’d be it.
September 10, 2022 at 14:00 #1614109One thing’s for sure – unless they open up an Indian takeaway with a discount for collection inside Buckingham Palace, Chezza won’t ever be sighted there.
Chezza is neither a culture vulture nor a patron of hotels.
Chezza holds the track record for the fastest ever circuit of every museum and stately home he was ever dragged to as a kid and is far too tight with money to ever pay to sleep anywhere.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"September 10, 2022 at 14:52 #1614114We went to Rome 6 years ago Gladiateur, I think it was about 30 Euros
a head with a guide, and that ws in a group of about 20. Not sure how
many went with a guide, although I think it is very beneficial. If at
that time the 8,000 visitors a day had the same idea, that would net
£2,400,000 per day. I don’t know the current cost.I doubt the palaces and other historic buildings, would be a short lived
activity seeing as the Colosseum has been a tourist attraction since the
18th centuary. Either way, it’s a lot of filthy lucre
September 10, 2022 at 15:25 #1614125Historically there is nothing particularly unusual about coins bearing the previous monarch’s image being in circulation. I can remember having old shilling coins bearing George VI’s image, which were still legal currency as 5p after decimal currency was introduced
When a nipper in the ’60s I built a collection of pennies obtained from loose change: worn Edwardian ones were still quite common then and even nearly worn-flat Victorian examples turned up occasionally. An 1876 was the oldest found, and I still have it!
By decimalisation in 1971 and withdrawal of the dear old proper penny I’d managed to accumulate examples of virtually all mintage-years since 1900 and around 10 or so Victorian ones; the exceptions being 1950 and 1951 which are very scarce (and quite valuable) and the not so valuable but still scarce 1953 which was the first to bear the Queen’s head
The full set of denominations – from Farthing to Half Crown – were minted in 1953 with the new Queen’s head, so perhaps we can expect to see coins bearing Charles next year
September 10, 2022 at 18:14 #1614157Funeral confirmed as Monday 19th September.
The BHA has confirmed all meetings on the day are abandoned.

I’d best start studying the form now because the Telegraph reckons that’s “the day.” ”
Another winner I didn’t back – FML.

Likewise. I still have them somewhere. Included one with the young Victoria, though I can’t remember what date it is.So relieved funeral isn’t the 18th as I’ve booked a table in the restaurant at Plumpton for my birthday. Been planning it for months. Friends travelling down etc. I’m lucky (as are Plumpton) and with the rail strike cancelled and the Monday now a bank holiday, it’s actually worked out well. I’m sure there are plenty of poor devils whose plans will be trashed though. Daresay there are already many tales of woe from cancelled event but we won’t be hearing about them.

Gladiateur you know that Buckingham Palace is already open to the public, albeit on a very limited basis? Sold out for this year but internet search suggests £44 for one adult. Windsor Castle is £23.50. None of these visitors get to see a royal, indeed, if one turns up, they could find themselves denied access to areas normally included in the tour.
September 10, 2022 at 19:11 #1614164I have it on good authority they were all set for Sunday (so they didn’t have to give the proles an extra day off from whatever it is people not on the civil list do on week days) 18th September until it was pointed out it was Tonge’s birthday bash at Plumpton.

September 10, 2022 at 22:51 #1614180I’ve just put BBC1 on and it turns out there’s a war on. Pleased to say it’s looking slightly better for our Ukrainian friends too.
September 10, 2022 at 22:56 #1614181I shudder to think how far you were into the broadcast before it got a mention, Richard.
I’ve evolved from the mute button to simply keeping my TV switched off.
It’s getting a break until after the Coronation and I can visit the BBC news website without getting RSI from scrolling down to find a non-Royal news story.

The excellent Lyse Douset was reporting from her native Canada about you-know-what. I hope she was there having a well earned break, as much as we need her likes on the front line.
September 11, 2022 at 01:19 #1614189Strange isn’t it that when someone dies you often get to know the real person. I wrote down a list of what she did and what I’ve done.
Ever feel you’ve been cheated ?
