As a mark of respect to The Queen, all bets will have a maximum payout of £100.
September 15, 2022 at 20:18 #1614820Will the notes bear Charles’ face on them. One thing his coronation will boost the economy.
You've got to accentuate the positive.
Eliminate the negative.
Latch on to the affirmative.

Wouldn’t surprise me, Richard.

I’m sitting here, drinking my evening coffee with a biscuit or two, wondering what on Earth your friend means, Tonge!
Hope there’s no such Colombian marching powder chat at Plumpton on Sunday!

September 15, 2022 at 21:41 #1614834I’m still struggling with trying to understand what motivates someone to travel to London and queue for up to 30 hours to spend 30 seconds walking past a dead person in a box they never personally even knew.
I might drive to the beach on Monday if it’s a nice day.

I’ll see myself out.
September 15, 2022 at 21:53 #1614836That’s dedication for you.
I wouldn’t queue up for half an hour if meant having a free lemon hooch, autograph and photo with Thiago AlcantaraGaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
September 15, 2022 at 22:12 #1614840Queues are anathema to me – I refuse to queue for anything, especially to give someone some of my money.
That said, I did join a one-person queue to buy half a kilo of shell on prawns in Selsey before going on to Goodwood races recently.
Got a vague recollection there was someone ahead of me when I bought a three-scoop mint chocolate chip waffle cone on the beach later the same morning.
That was a brunch and a half.

I remember being in London when the Queen paraded round the streets in a carriage with Hirohito and I fainted just before I got to see them. If I couldn’t do it when I was in my twenties there’s no chance now. I love historic occasions.
September 15, 2022 at 22:27 #1614844It’s not just the time, it’s the cost. They were interviewing people in the queue from various parts of the Westcountry on the local news and I’m sat there thinking that either a train fare or petrol and parking must be the thick end of a ton at best. Then you have to feed yourself, possibly a hotel for a night. Unless you’re retired it’s a day or two of annual leave. Madness.
The beach on Monday is a good shout Ian. A few pounds worth of petrol for me and I’ll always find free parking in the many seaside towns I have to choose from becuase I bet parking charges won’t be suspended as a mark of respect. But as long as they don’t mute the waves I’ll be happy.
September 15, 2022 at 22:36 #1614845There won’t be any seafood stalls open or ice cream vans around, but I can stock up with this sort of thing on Sunday, take my own and probably have West Wittering beach to myself.
It’s under serious consideration.

It’s difficult to explain this but I think the thing that the Queen represents to a lot of people is a sort of constancy in their lives, and for most, a connection with their parents, and grandparents. There has been so much change over seventy years and people have inevitably lost people in that time, but the Queen, whether you love or loathe her has had a constant presence, and I think that is what people are recognizing and this is exhibited by their pilgrimages and the long queues. It is that that connecting generational presence is no longer there. They want to pay a final homage to this lifetime loss, that has suddenly been taken from them. Communal grief whether observer or participator, is such a powerful force, and as heady as the emotion of love, which again is hard to bottle or explain.
September 16, 2022 at 01:14 #1614854Totally agree Gamble. I think many of the mourners are not just mourning the Queen. They are also mourning their own losses, and the passing of time. The way that the Queen and the Royals link us to the past on both a historical and a personal level seems to resonate with many people.
I’m not convinced that those of us who have such feelings fully comprehend them, and they aren’t an easy thing to explain to those who do not share them. I won’t be queuing up, but I understand why people do.
September 16, 2022 at 05:48 #1614857That’s interesting – I already have various ways of connecting with my past and don’t need a remote figure I never met in order to facilitate this, but it perhaps helps explain the motivations of those who do this sort of thing.
