Beef or Salmon falls into that category but just because the Aintree fences are bigger does it mean he’s going to fall. Each horse has his own style of jumping and they jump what they see in front of them. They don’t jump 4ft 6" high when they come to The Chair they jump 6ft high.

The Chair isn’t quite that high. I think it’s about 5′ 1" or 5′ 2" high on the takeoff side. It is a very wide spread though, and I suspect the drop is a few inches more than the take-off side.

February 11, 2008 at 15:05 #142272Have I missed it or has somebody on this thread actually given some credit to The Listener and his connections on their victory?

I’m in no way saying that he is a threat to KS or Denman in a true run race but his record in Irish Grade 1 chases is superb.
Well done to all and I hope Robert is continuing his recovery.
True Mr Ghost think we have hijacked the thread, sorry.
Yes it was another great run by The Listener, think he has such a good record in Ireland because he is more likely to get soft ground. Would have been even better had Darryl not "jumped off" in NI.
Hope he does go for the Gold Cup as he has a fair chance of staying the Gold Cup distance. In last years Hennessay he seemed to go off too quick and the inexperienced Jacob looked unbalanced on the run in. Not helped by failing to get to the rail.
Have also backed him at 89/1 (just £3).
Value Is EverythingFebruary 11, 2008 at 15:05 #142273See!! it’s tiny BOS will skip over it

Your correct Rob has a 6ft ditch………big mofo all the same…was it always 5.2" I know they modified the course in the 80’s and the chair was one of the fences, but what they did to it, I can’t remember. They fixed that awful landing area at bechers which used to be deadly wasn’t it the overall width they changed?
February 11, 2008 at 15:19 #142274They altered all the fences over a period of time so that the apron on the takeoff side was more inviting. They used to very stark and upright. I’m not sure what adjustments were made to the Chair, but I know the landing side at Bechers was levelled and the brook covered over.
Whatever, I really don’t think Beef Or Salmon would have a cat in hell’s chance of winning the National. I doubt he would stay for starters, and his jumping on Sunday looked clumsy at times.
