Thanks for putting my mind at rest. I can breath a little easier now, who writes these things, some wind up merchant no doubt, intent on giving me sleepless nights, whatever next? perhaps Trescothick to get a return to the International team.

I see Derbyshire have snapped up Wes Durston for the 20/20 campaign, how does that work, does this mean he will not be playing for the Unicorns when the 40 overs restarts. :?

Don’t panic all you Somerset for twenty/20 glory followers….oh no that’s just me.

Big defeat but it was against the defending champions who bowled and fielded near perfection. Even better there is plenty of time to get back on track as the lay out for the cup is two groups of nine teams, playing each other twice and 4 from each group progressing to the quarter final stage so just about enough room for error but got to improve.

I’m not allowed to drink so I’m going for a long lie down. :x

Somerset against Essex today – I was toying with the possibility of an Essex win, given the absence of Kieswetter and the continued non-performance of Trescothick…

Mt totally unbiased view is that Essex are the better option looking at odds but Somerset will hit form eventually.

Somerset have been fortunate to win two games as they could easily be looking at a 0-4 record, the Hampshire game was lost until Adams gave his wicket away and a collapse followed something like 5 wickets for 5 runs in the last three overs when only needing about 12 and the win against Middlesex was due to a Pollard 89 off 45 balls. The batsmen especially at the top have not fired yet, but that was and has always been the strength of the side.

Essex look a good allround side, Ten Doscarte(I’ve spelt that wrong :? )is on a hot streak but his knocks of 98 and 100 both ended up on the losing side. I think the bowling might be a slight weakness of Essex, apart from Kaniera I’m not to sure if they have enough ammunition and that’s why I feel Somerset and Trescothick could come out the winners.

Thanks Nathan, yes the Dutchman (I’m a spelling coward!) has been their only decent batsman so far and I think you are right about their bowling.

I’m not sure about Nick Compton opening the batting (haven’t seen the teams yet so he may not be) but was astonished to see De Bruyn available at 10-1 to top score for Somerset with Extra Bet. Doesn’t he usually bat at 3 or so?

Suppiah or Compton will probably open, Hildreth has been in at 3. I think De Bruyn will come in after Pollard or Trego as he is good at getting the hitters back on strike but depending on if losing early wickets might be pushed up the order but if all goes to plan about 6 or 7 I reckon?

edit – Compton surprisingly is quite an adventurous 20/20 player, tries some Dil scoops et al but gets out. :(

Only saw the first four overs and will watch the rest tomorrow, but you were spot on about De Bruyn, came in at 7 and out for 0 to boot! Next time I will check with you before wagering money on Somerset players.

Pleased to see Warwickshire beat Notts.

I hope I didn’t put you off backing Essex.

That was truly awful, don’t think i will recover from that, thought the game was in the bag, amazing how 20/20 can quickly change, now know how Hampshire must of felt the other week.

Just been watching the game again – did I imagine it or when Kaneria got Pollard, did he see him off by calling him an f*****g n*****? I’ve watched it three times and it appears as clear as day. Astonished nothing has been said about it.

I didn’t notice that, but my better half has just said she thought the same as you but forgot to tell me at the time as the phone started ringing. That wicket probably changed the game in that if they could have seen Kaneria off I think Pollard would of took a liking to the other bowlers. But you could also say if Ten Doeschate didn’t get injured Essex looked set for 200+.

I thought 20/20 would be Somerset’s strong suit and have got £30 on them winning the thing, touch and go if they qualify now as it looks the toughest group imo. But id happily lose the money in return for the County Championship instead.

Some crazy decision making going on there, Hildreth in particular and to be honest, Pollard wasn’t too clever, he should have expected a different one.

I’ve emailed SKY and Essex to get their take on the incident, might even send one to the ECB. It just seemed so blatant and I was astonished no-one in the SKY team noticed it. More likely that they did but chose to say nothing, which I don’t think is right.

You were a day or so too early with De Bruyn, Andrew. The trouble with trying to find a bet for top scorer is that depending on the situation with how many early wickets are lost most batting sides seem flexible with their order. De Bruyn today though wasn’t just getting Pollard and Trego back on strike but hitting the big shots aswell and was going toe to toe with Pollard with the run rate.

Hopefully De Bruyn’s fine knock of 95 will finally give this team some momentum and stability in the batting department.

Quote from the website – De Bruyn "To be honest I wanted to prove a point, I have been up and down the order recently and I wanted to show that I can bat at 4 hold an innings together and score quickly".

Hi Andrew, I was wondering if Sky or Essex responded to your emails?

I noticed in the same match that the ECB have reprimand Grant Flower for using ‘Obscene, offensive or insulting’ language or gestures towards the crowd.

    Hi Nathan

I’m not surprised about Flower’s punishment. Nothing yet from either Sky or Essex, though Essex did acknowledge the complaint. Will probably chase it up next week

I appreciate it’s possibly Simon Jones 1st twenty/20 game for his new county Hampshire and he has had a frustrating time of it with his injury problems and has an aggressive approach to bowling but his send off to the wicket of Glamorgan’s Allenby was not good viewing, OK it’s possibly water off a ducks back to cricket players but there is probably a lot of younger viewers watching these matches and it does not create a good example, you can imagine a under 10’s game when a bowler takes a wicket, aggressively tells the batsmen to **** off and then receives the full willow across his head.
