Just goes to show how bad Div Two is! I confidently predict Worcester will be back next year. The lack of funds will see to that. They need to get Shakib again (and Moeen obviously)
Commiserations Nathan, Somerset deserved more than that out of the season. They’ve played some good cricket this year and they’ll surely win something next.
September 22, 2010 at 15:28 #318734Gareth Andrew leaving is a blow to Worcester as he was just starting to show a raise in his abilities. Shakib’s arrival seemed to get the team going.
I’ve heard a rumour Pollard wants a full season of county cricket next year and with Somerset’s number 1 priority retaining Kartik it could be interesting if a county take him on. If not then Somerset say they will have him back for the 20/20 cup.

My mistake Gareth Andrew now staying with Worcester.

March 29, 2011 at 21:52 #347805Any thoughts on the top batsman markets in the County Championship this year?
Odds are (It seems that only Stan James are pricing this up)
Division One
5/1 Trescothick
7/1 Hildreth
10/1 Lyth, Adams, Carberry
16/1 McGrath, Di Venuto, Goodwin
20/1 BarDivision Two
9/2 Ramprakash
9/1 Rogers, Bopara
10/1 Van Jaarsveld, Peters, Davies
14/1 Peterson, Taylor
16/1 Malan, Williamson, Key
20/1 BarEach Way Double on Trescothick & Ramprakash maybe?
March 30, 2011 at 11:44 #347874I wouldn’t put you off with those David, prices could be a touch better but both have superb chances imo, help by the fact that barring something weird happening neither are going to get a recall to the England fold. Hildreth and Lyth if included could miss a few games when the Lions play if their matches clash with the county games.(I haven’t checked but the Lions games have clashed the past two season at least with the championship.)
Surrey have signed De Bruyn and I can see Ramps and him having a few long partnership’s in the middle order with both hard to get out should give Ramps plenty of time in the middle.
Van Jaarsveld should play every game and prove last year that he can accumulate big scores so is a danger and at a big price 22/1 I quite like Owais Shah although not too sure if he will play every game as he could be a contender for England’s one day side perhaps.
Di Venuto and Goodwin look interesting at 16’s with preference for Goodwin as Di Venuto although very good will be playing his home games on one of the most bowler friendly wickets in the country especially early in the season with the ball likely to be swinging. But other than those two I cant see past Trescothick.
I see their is a market for top Somerset bowler. I like Charl Willoughby at 3/1 as he will only play in the championship matches this season unless plans have changed and Kartik and Thomas will both be away on IPL duty for the start of the season. Willoughby has been consistent and has taken over 50 wickets in all of his season’s at Somerset and could get a good lead by the time the other two return. Only doubt being Somerset are alot stronger in depth this season and when everyone is available their might be selections issues.

April 22, 2011 at 21:10 #351673Nathan, I logged onto Cricinfo today and was shocked to find this headline:

Has the world gone mad?

, I was hoping it was just a bad dream…… Optimism and expectations were so so high before the start of the season after last years performances on all fronts. I am absolutely gutted to be honest.A similar thing happened last season when Somerset lost their 2 opening games but at least we put up some fight in those games this season we we’ve lost every session.

I’ve been trying to get my head around it all but am struggling to find any answer to as why it’s been so shocking. The team doesn’t seem to cope with the favourites tag very well, in both last season’s one day finals they were favs and were touted as fav’s for everything this season, prob favs to go down now..

When the top order batsmen don’t fire which was rare the likes of Alf Thomas, Ben Phillips and Kartik added a few vital late runs or hanged on in their to frustrate the opposition but Hussain, Kirby, Mendis and Willoughby is like having 4 number 11’s.
Another seemingly loss to the club looks to be Zander De Bruyn who values his wicket with his life and was always the glue of an innings, Hildreth or Compton have to step into that role.
Oh well, things can only get better as Brain Rose keeps saying…

April 23, 2011 at 08:39 #351736Plenty of time left though. Last year it was the competition no-one wanted to win, perhaps the bad start will shake them up a bit.
Saw Thomas in the Pune’s first IPL game, he opened the bowling with Parnell, looked v.good.
And on the subject of the IPL, I think people can still make a profit in the match odds markets by automatically backing the bigger priced team. The logic being that all these teams are full of match-winners and T20 is a lottery. We’ll see how it goes.
Today it’s Delhi v Punjab and even if you attempt to go on ‘form’ I have no idea why Delhi are favourites. Bottom of the table, weaker squad than most, ordinary captain.
I backed Punjab to win the thing, along with Kochi, which they probably won’t, but they are 2.3 on the exchanges and should be backed at that price.

I would agree with that and it has the added bonus that if the selection gets a great start or is in charge at whatever stage you can always cover your bet when the Fav drifts to odds against.

May 2, 2011 at 11:04 #353290Normal service has resumed after the abysmal start Somerset suffered 2 innings defeats now followed by 3 wins on the spin, happy days are returning and confidence is on the increase…

Cant see past a home win today Mendis returned yesterday v Unicorns so the team will be at full strength minus the 2 in IPL duty
. It looks if though Cosgrove and Maynard will be missing from the Glamorgan side and they have been the sides main batsmen. 1/2 may seem short enough but it’s the equivalent of Barcelona v Taunton Town at football or Phil Taylor v Andrew Hughes at Darts.

I suppose Maynard wouldn’t be playing considering he is no longer at the club..
, joined Surrey or someone. This fooking weather has pi$$ed me off today it always happens just as I was working out my future winnings with Somerset set for 350+ it teems down.

Bet Duckworth leave Glamorgan 100 to win off about 10 overs or so.

May 2, 2011 at 22:03 #353404Well that all ended up a bit tooooooo close for comfort but a deserved win in as much as I still believe Somerset were heading for 350-400 which would of batted Glamorgan well and truly out of the game. All’s well that ends well and we can rest easy for a couple of days just in time for Worcester to roll on into town to do battle with in the Championship….

May 7, 2011 at 21:54 #354353After 2 innings defeats Somerset have now chalked up 5 wins in a row….
The latest victims were Worcestershire in the County Championship on a
Next up is Gloucester in the 40 over knock about. A derby which has only gone the way of Somerset in recent seasons but this Gloucseter side to my surprised has started the season off in fine form, despite losing several key players some of the youngsters have really stepped up to the plate and I expect a tough game tomorrow for a change.

The games on sky so they put on the extra markets and the one I like is in the top Somerset batsmen market with Pete Trego at 5/1 looking a fair price considering the form he is in capped off with a brutal 100 last week facing 50 odd balls to do it. Dangers – plenty of them but Trescothick has not got going yet this season apart from his 200 runs in 1 innings in the championship and has struggled with his timing and was the same last season only really excelling in the latter half of the season. Kieswetter is in good form and touch and is probably the biggest threat.
Trego will be in at 3 and seems to be determined to prove a point that he can bat up the order after being slightly frustrated at ending up with the tail in CC games.
Some of Trego’s shots v Glamorgan.(One of the 6’s went through a window of the radio commentary box)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=curRLoZwlaQ
