Name any jockey whose horse has fallen in a chase, has been remounted and gone on to win?
I don’t know the jockey name – in 1945 Never Mind II refused to jump a particular fence and the jockey unsaddled and led him back to the paddocks, only to be informed every other horse had fallen and was DQ’d.
He resaddled and won the 2-mile steeplechase in 11 minutes 28 seconds.
February 9, 2009 at 06:11 #209116You don’t have to go back to 1945 for that didn’t Tony McCoy do that?
Also I was gonna query that one about the Leger swithch, those holes in the groundat Donny did for Paul Touching Wood Cook’s career.

Ditto Ian Johnson.
February 9, 2009 at 10:27 #209125That is correct – Dettori rode in the 1989 St Leger when a waterlogged Doncaster was postponed and transferred to Ayr a week later.
Doncaster wasn’t waterlogged though; the track was deemed unsafe to race on after some underground drains collapsed.
Well done. (Upon further reading) Track officials realised the cause of the falls in the Portland was due to faulty track drainage, and abandoned the remainder of the St. Leger meeting.
February 9, 2009 at 13:56 #209131Not at all hard to remember Mr D, as it was quite a scandal at the time, especially when officials essentially called trainer Liam Codd a liar after he claimed to have found huge holes in the track after the Portland, in which his Madraco fell when leading. They raced the following day only for another horse to fall in the nursery (Able Player?), whereupon the problem was admitted.
February 9, 2009 at 13:58 #209133Who trained the first all-weather winner in this country?
Conrad Allen,Niklas Angel at Lingers ridden by Richard Quinn
February 9, 2009 at 14:00 #209134Bingo GD; never realised at the time that it’s a slightly naughty name for a horse (Niklas = Knickerless, ooh er).

Didn’t those falls end the career of one of the jockeys involved?
February 9, 2009 at 15:13 #209146Paul Cook I think.
The other jockeys were Ray Cochrane and Ian Johnson.
February 9, 2009 at 15:18 #209150What chaser whose name began with the letter ‘R’ fell in a race in the 1960’s when priced at 100/6 on? RONDETTO (think it was a 3runner race)
Name any jockey whose horse has fallen in a chase, has been remounted and gone on to win? PETER NIVEN (can’t remember whether anything else was standing)
February 9, 2009 at 16:21 #209166Sorry I see the question re Donny had already been answered.

I suspect if you go back far enough it is probably possible to push three figures for answers to this one.
The obvious one in recent history is Tony McCoy on Family Business at Southwell.
February 9, 2009 at 17:34 #209177I saw Peter Scudamore do it one day at Chepstow in a 3M novice chase on a horse called (I think) Capability Brown sometime in the early 90’s.
The horse fell three out when a distance clear, Scudamore held onto the reins, hopped back on board and won easily.
February 9, 2009 at 21:50 #209264Ed Dunlop trained Temple of Thebes – ridden by Stephen Donohoe.
Sorry I couldn’t get the chat room to work which was a shame because looking forward to the quiz.
Ed Dunlop Is the correct answer.
Adrian i think the quiz was for the 22nd so you haven’t missed it.

You’re right Alan; the horse in second (Rufus) was so slow/legless that the winner was actually further clear by the next fence than he was when he fell!

I remember seeing such a race on a particularly cruel round of What Happened Next on A Question Of Sport. The race was won by Potato Picker after remounting at Perth, September 1990. Jockey: P Niven.
February 11, 2009 at 02:43 #209558Here is a really annlying one that would wind up John McRirick no end (I have sent it to Channel 4 for just that purpose)
Which British Racecourse has a wartime Derby winner alongside it?
