No, before anyone says anything, I was wrong, just watched the film of the ’76 National and the park fences were there then.
Back to the drawing board.

The Grand National was run on the saturday.
Ok, I’ll chance my arm with Charlotte Brew being the first woman to ride in the race. No ?

April 2, 2009 at 16:06 #219703The first woman jockey to ride in the race is indeed the correct answer (or at least the one to the question which was in my head!)
You may be right about the fence thingy but that’s a question for another day!
April 2, 2009 at 16:12 #219709Doing a quick search, the last day of Flat racing at Aintree was on the Thursday in 1976, and the Friday and Saturday that year were all jump racing.
Regarding the fences, ‘youtubing’ the Grand Nationals I found that the park fences on the Mildmay Course were introduced in 1975.
Keep those in mind, they might be useful for quizzes ………

Charlotte Brew rode Barony Fort a steady point to pointer who had warmed up for aintree in a point. They were miles behind throughout but kept going until he refused at the last ditch 4 out. Actually, refused is not the right word as he was just going too slowly to jump it and sort of ground to a halt with no harm done to anyone.
