As I’ll be having a go at the Flat Racing Tipster Competition I’ll have to check the fields out every day so I though I’d have a try at making a profit on the Flat. It’s years since I had a try and I’m not going to risk more than £500 across the season but I’ve made a decent profit on the jumps this year despite The Festival setback so it’s not much to risk for a bit of fun and it’s bookies cah anyay.

Here goes First Bet….(actually second, I had a place at 14-1 in The Chester Cup but I won’t count that although I did post the selection pre race)

£15 EW DANCE ON BY 5.30 Navan (the favourite looks far too short and O’Brien’s horse hasn’t had much luck in running in better class events on his last two starts)

£15 EW DANCE ON BY 5.30 Navan

Second 4-1 Loss £3 but great value nevertheless worked out 23-1 to my cash (Risk £3 for possible return of £72)

Superb EW opportunity at Leopardstown today, PROFOUND BEAUTY £25EW
Were it not for the lack of a recent run, I’d make her cast iron to win the race, her form on the better ground she’ll have today(IMO is far better that the favourite’s who would not be so short if he’s wasn’t a Ballydoyle horse

No proper bets tonight but I’ve made BASALT 14-1 my (less than confident)nap in the tipping competition. My reserve is FORCE OF HABIT 4-1 who would be, I feel, a really good thing at 1m6f or even 1m4f but tonight’s race is over a mere 10 furlongs so I’m far from confident.
The only other one I considered at all was another at Fairyhouse, UNITY 2-1, in the last. She takes a huge drop in class after running well against serious classic contender Akderena in her last two outings.
Maybe I should even have a bet, I didn’t back my winning nap yesterday but here goes with a £1 EW PATENT (£14 staked) which underlines the fun aspect rather than the seriousness of the bet!

Having just trawl through a lot of flat races to find a nap, one horse stands head and shoulder above the others,

    ADDRESS UNKNOWN (7.00 The Curragh)

and I’ll be having a single later, the ammount will depend on results from Epsom this afternoon. I’ll post the bet later

While having a study of the form I unearhed a few more that all look like winners albeit mostly at very low prices.
FAME AND GLORY (Coronation Cup) has only Sariska to beat.
AVIATE was my original Oaks fancy and the 5-1 would boost any multipule bet
When I last followed the flat seriously Mark Prescott’s improving middle distance 3-Y-Olds, often running under a penalty, were a source of regular income, it looks as if he still has the knack and BONA FORTUNA and AESTIVAL both look well ahead of the handicapper.
Add Henry De Bromhead’s MY BROTHER PAT, ridden by Nina Carberry in the last at Tramore, NH Flat, so I suppose that counts as "The Flat" for purposes of my bets :)

Lets go for a 15p EW Heinz and an extra £1.45 EW Acc, £20 staked

Poor outcome on a day when 3 of my 6 selections won, very poor run by Address Unknown, well below his first two runs of the season
    Loss on the day £66.97
Running total on season PROFIT £67.93

Only two flat selections today, one long shot,

    STRIKE UP THE BAND

in the mad dash at Epsom, I like the jockey/trainer combination and on his old fom he’s very well treated, minor leap of faith required though, only £1.50 ew and 3 x £1 ew doubles and a £1.50 ew treble with my only other flat bet, my (competition) nap,

    ROYAL SWAIN

4.50 Musselburgh high grade Bumper horse thrown in on his NH form. Third horse is my (proper) Nap, ARDNACLANCY 4.25 Hexham (and yes, I am aware that’s not a flat race!)
    £12 staked
Unless Strike Up The Band wins at Epsom, I’ll be having a single on Royal Swain later….watch this space

Ardnaclancy has just gone in at 15-2 and as I had a "proper" bet on him (See "More Hunter Chasers", my main betting thread) I’ll add £17.50 ew on Royal Swain (5-2 best odds)

My NH season is over with a very good result to end the year, even better now I see I got 17-2 courtesy of "best odds" on Ardanclancy, which meant I ended the year at the highest point, profitwise, that I’d reached all season…just, (Seasons Profit 2520 points) thanks to a grear run in Hunter Chases over the last few weeks. Would have almost doubled that total with my biggest bet of the season on Bradley at Stratford, had he won, that is, instead of finishing second after he picking up an injury two out :(

It’s years since I had a go at the flat so my stakes are

    very

modest in comparison to the jumps so the £50ew I’ll be having on

    CAPE BLANCO

is a very big bet for me on the flat and represents a high degree of confidence in the colt.

Only other selection today is an EW on ZARALABAND i the last at Listowel, stakes will depend on the result of The French Derby, I’ll post the bet before the race.

Poor show by my two flat selections yesyerday, especially considering I had 5 winners from 14 selections in the tipping competition yesterday, 9-1. 5-1. 9-2 etc, but I backed the wrong two obviously!!!!

Flat Season Profit now dropped to £20.97

Poor results last week meant that I dropped from a three figure profit to a flat season’s loss of

    Glorified

19:05 Leopardstown (7-1) was backed on her debut as if she was already back in the winners enclosure and, although upped in grade tonight, she looks to have a big future and it’s well worth taking a chance on her against what is basically fairly exposed opposition.

    Rayeni

19:35 Leopardstown (2-1) last years 2000gns runner up should be too good for these over his best trip and the right going
With the form from her debut working out nicely, I make

    Welcome Addition

(3-1) 21:05 Leopardstown the best bet of the day
To try to get some running up money on Dernot Weld’s filly, I’ve had 3 x £2 EW Doubles and a £2 Each Way Treble
Depending on the first race result I may have other bets on the later two

Two high class jockeys stand out a country mile in the Ladies Amateur Race at York, in a race like this they can be worth 7 to 10lbs.
    Nina Carberry rides Mark Johnston’s

    SPIRIT IS NEEDED

who looks to be ahead of the handicap, £20 EW
Katie Walsh rides the very useful hurdler,

    CONQUISTO

who has to be worth a £5ew saver with four places on offer.
£50 staked if these go down with no return I’ll be £210 in arrears on the season
I may up these stakes if Dorabelle win the first at Hexham but I won’t have time between races to post.
