Also, Bedrock beat Wicklow Brave by 5L in receipt of 4lbs 3 weeks before he beat Samcro. Wicklow Brave has been in decent form throughout the summer and is rated 159 over hurdles so I do think that the story of the downfall of Samcro is a bit premature. If he’s posting 160 plus in his first run of the season then he only needs another half a stone improvement to get up there with Buveur Dair and at the age of 6 a half a stone of improvement is nothing
November 7, 2018 at 08:47 #1379910Another possibility is that Elliott got spanked by Mullins during the late season festivals and maybe he has adjusted the conditioning / training schedules of his horses
I think it’s something Henderson has done during the last 15 years as the prize money at Aintree has increased; he used to have an awful record there.
November 7, 2018 at 09:37 #1379912Interesting thought MarkTT. There isn’t quite enough money available in the first half of the winter for Elliott to build up a big enough lead to try to secure the championship by February (especially not this year after the summer they both had). And some other trainers have decent handicappers and even graded horses so they are taking a slice of the winter pie that used to be mostly Elliott’s.
It is going to be tough for Elliott to play Mullins at his own game and peaking them later. I think to win in the next few years he needs to copy another facet of Mullins’ game and buy fast young 2m hurdle prospects. But to do that he needs to persuade Giggi to broaden the buying menu.
November 7, 2018 at 10:08 #1379914True GAG, they do buy flat types though….they often have a strong hand in the Triumph etc.
Maybe not enough of them stay hurdling which provides Mullins with a big chunk of money, but that is their game and they shouldn’t change their principles just for a trainer’s championship.
Elliot is fantastic, he can train a 100 handicapper into a 130 horse by great placing, but i do feel its almost as if Giggy hold too much of a stranglehold over him now. Whilst Mullins had Giggy, he still had lots of owners other than them that were successful and bought different types, is that down to the genius of Kirk and Boulard? Perhaps!

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!November 10, 2018 at 18:17 #1380254Within the last few days, a few more of the Gigginstown / Elliott favs have performed like needing the run
Dallas Des Pictons ran like it was schooled round.
November 10, 2018 at 20:47 #1380262I’d love to know how Samcro, bought to be a chaser, built like a chaser, touted as a chaser, has schooled over fences.
November 11, 2018 at 10:30 #1380276Possibly similar to Faugheen, who was supposed to be going chasing; Annie Power another touted as a chaser yet never jumped a fence in public
November 12, 2018 at 03:36 #1380355Faugheen looked a natural chaser, esp the way he bounded over his hurdlers; just one of life’s regrets, we’ll never know
November 12, 2018 at 10:26 #1380359To me missing Faugheen going chasing is certainly not one of life’s regrets- he’s been the best hurdler i’ve properly seen since following racing.
They are trying to mimic this with Samcro, and to be honest up until two Friday’s ago a lot were thinking he was the new Faugheen to a degree. Probability is that he isn’t tho, as they don’t come around so often!

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!November 12, 2018 at 11:11 #1380361Think Faugheen and Samcro have the same Daddy, dont they? They’re both by Germany
November 12, 2018 at 18:00 #1380386Both sired by Germany, both dams sired by sons of Sadlers Wells, with Accordion in Faugheen’s pedigree being more successful as a NH sire.
Both made a successful hurdles debut at Punchestown ( as did Captain Cee Bee, also by Germany )December 1, 2018 at 15:00 #1387742Elliot still saying Destination CH
He had to make the running and set the race up for Buver D’Air by going so slow and Cheltenham has the hill but even so, it seems a bit stubborn, maybe the owner and talk him out of itGaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
December 4, 2018 at 18:50 #1388021as I thought (and was hoping) there might be a change of plan, this was trainer’s comments today…
“I have yet to speak to Michael or Eddie [O’Leary, of owners Gigginstown House Stud] about him and there’s every chance he could go for any race.”
December 4, 2018 at 19:21 #1388022If they are sticking by fact Elliot likes to put his horses in the most winnable races, he certainly wouldn’t be going to the CH..
