@jackh1092 – Timeform rated Faugheen 155+ following his Neptune success… The exact same as Samcro now.

For what its worth I think Samcro will go for the JLT. Its often viewed as a stepping stone to the Gold Cup for the ‘classier’ sorts, whilst the RSA is more for the dour stayers, a la Don Poli. I don’t think Gordon will risk bottoming him out in the gruelling test of an RSA, regardless of what O’Leary wants, and as has been mentioned Gigginstown have plenty that could end up in the RSA – Blow By Blow and Cracking Smart to name but two.

He went for the intermediate trip this year and I think he’ll go for it again, should be noted the bookmakers agree quite strongly.

And the classy horses from the jlt have been? Ony vautour springs to my mind..

Dont know where the rsa ets its “gruelling” reputation, its by far a better pointer to the GC than the JLT …

I think if Gigginstown didn’t have the other horses they would probably follow the tried and tested route that they took with Don Cossack and hence go for the RSA. However, they do have the other horses to think about hence I think they will probably go for the middle distance JLT. Moreover, I think Samcro has more natural speed than Don Cossack so the JLT will probably be most suitable.

Thanks Voleur. I was intrigued to see what they went with him. Really not sure his performance warranted any higher than Faugheen, Douvan, Vautour of recent times…..

At the prices he’ll go off in future, I’ll settle for watching. Showed inexperience under pressure to my eye rather than idled after last. Once he understood what was required, he was going away again. Within a minute of pulling up I wouldn’t have been able to tell if he was walking around in preparation for going to the start.

Some engine, some stride on him. He’s a wee bit sloppy at times with his front end at hurdles, but for what looks a born chaser, that can be excused.

The hurdles rating is completely irrelevant, Chasing is simply a new ballgame.

Best Mate was rated 143 after his defeat in the Supreme and won three Gold Cups, Kauto Star never jumped a single hurdle in Britain and became a legend, Denman was only 2nd to Nicanor in the Sun Alliance and received an OR of 155.

Quite interesting that Noel Meade trained horses managed to beat Best Mate and Denman in the Novice Hurdles at Cheltenham, but never went on to anything after that. One race wonders I guess…..

Asked whether Samcro would remain over hurdles or embark on a career over fences next season, the trainer told At The Races: ” It’s still all up in the air. We’re still toying with the idea of training him for the Champion Hurdle next year, but nothing is set in concrete yet.

“I’ll have to talk to Michael and Eddie (O’Leary). We’ll get Punchestown out of the way and make a plan then.”

I’d love to see him in the Champion

I’ve taken 5/2 on him for any race.

As I said on the Ballymore thread last year at the start of the season, the any race market is made for this horse. He’d win the RSA but it’s a waste of his natural speed. The Arkle seems a strange route if they have him as a gold cup horse but yet he’d win an Arkle too. A Champion Hurdle isn’t a usual gigginstown method but he would beat Buveur Dair in that. The JLT is his best race in my opinion as it tests him as a chase whilst also mixing speed and stamina with a view to stepping up as a gold cup horse in 2020.

He’ll win any race next year of those four options. If he goes in the Champion Hurdle as rumoured, he could be a tasty price on the day if Buveur D’air runs in the weak races as preps like he did this year and wins them easily. The thought of Samcro touching 2/1 next year at the festival could be a ‘put your bollox on him’ job.

I made it very clear back in September last year that I love the horse. He’s an absolute superstar.

It certainly will be interesting to see how Samcro fares in Fridays Punchestown Champion Hurdle. I’d imagine defeat would rule out the Cheltenham Champion Hurdle to a large degree but a win would keep the door ajar. 2/1 second fav behind Melon on betfair sportsbook. A different day and a different dollar but Melon ran a blinder in defeat to Buveur D’air so will give some inkling to how Samcro fairs

Surely Samcro is priced like that because he might not run.

There’s next to no chance that he goes off bigger than 11/8 at most for Friday. I’d have him in a match race every single time between the two.

Jumping into open company from his novice campaign is a big ask, hes going to have to improve another 7lbs to beat a fully wound up melon, more than capable going forward, might find it tough in his novice season would be my only concern…

Personally Ham, they will need to go a right pace for Melon to be seen at his best. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him underperform here. Clearly, Mullins will know what he needs in terms of pace, but unless they use Coquin Mans i can’t see the pace coming from elsewhere.

Samcro will win tomorrow doing handstands lads. And because of that will probably be the 2019 CH winner at the festival.

If beaten tomorrow, he’s the JLT winner instead.

Gordon Elliott quoted as saying today’s race will decide which route Samcro will take next season. So if you think he will win today the 7-1 about him for next year’s Champion Hurdle will disappear if antepost is your thing.
