Never shorter than 8/1 unfortunately, but been doing all forms of doubles, trebles etc. Did this last year and was a Big Zeb win away from around £10k! That was mainly down to getting Hurricane Fly at 10/1! Will keep trying
November 14, 2011 at 01:49 #377773Grand Crus very impressive, but it was only a novice chase in November and the form may not be that good. Madness to see him entered in the Betfair, I’ve seen too many promising novices ruined by being too highly tried. Dawn Run was the only lone to get away with it, and that only in the short-term

Especially considering his main danger didn’t even get around.
We have this speculation annually now regarding novices stepping up to take on the established horses – Hurricane Fly in 2009, Dunguib in 2010, Cue Card and Time For Rupert last season. Now we have Grand Crus and I’m certain there’ll be whispers about Peddlers Cross going for the Champion Chase before long. Novice races are there for a reason.
November 16, 2011 at 15:52 #3781502 i like at prices for this race currently are
The former is a grand horse and will win more races this season than he loses!November 24, 2011 at 16:44 #379452Delighted with the run from Sonfovic. Little bit green and on the whole jumped well although did make a few slight mistakes and landed on all fours at some fences. Very encouraging debut behind the RSA favourite and very hapy with the 50s I took on him earlier.
November 24, 2011 at 18:39 #379464Of course the second may turn out to be useful but my first impression of Grands Crus was that he ran flat and was some way below his best. I would be worried rather than happy that the natural exuberance appeared to be missing. That was his trademark over hurdles and it didn’t stop him getting home. Nothing particularly wrong with his jumping but he appears to put his all into every jump and I wonder if that may take more out of him than it did jumping hurdles.
It definitely wasn’t the performance of a Gold Cup winner. Having said that I would still like to see him have a long break and return to Cheltenham for the Gold Cup trial at the end of January. I certainly hope they avoid the Feltham.
November 24, 2011 at 20:58 #379492Second run over that distance was far too quick – should be gold cup bound this year imo as the rsa isnt exactly renound for horses training on – infact a lot have struggled so seems no advantage going for rsa first
November 24, 2011 at 21:46 #379504Grands Crus is very nice horse but I think he will not quite make it to the top: I suspect he doesn’t care for a battle.
Sonofvic seems very promising and I’m envious of you good judges who’ve had some fancy prices there.
If Cue Card wins well tomorrow (Let’s hope he’s given his head and allowed to stride out and jump freely) I wouldn’t be surprised to hear the RSA mentioned as a possible target (along with Arkle, Ryananir, Gold Cup etc etc!)
November 25, 2011 at 11:18 #379537Got the Henderson horse as insurance at 10s, should give account if himself today, fancy him having cue card personally.
November 25, 2011 at 12:10 #379542Does anyone have any idea which Gigginstown beasts will turn up for this? They look to have a pretty strong hand with Last Installment, First Liuetenant and Sir Des Champs.
I was impressed with Last Installment last time out, but SDC has so much potential and is already a festival winner. Maybe the new Jewson for that one?

I don’t think there is any evidence at all for suggesting Grands Crus ‘doesn’t care for a battle’. Unfortunately, there is plenty to suggest Cue Card does very little off the bridle.
November 25, 2011 at 14:29 #379555If it was not for Mr henderson’s terrible record in this race i would say that Bobs Worth looks made for the race but……..

First Lieutenant is heading over three miles for the Fort Leney at Christmas apparently. He’ll probably end up in this Sun Alliance and will be very hard bet.
Hard to know where Sir Des Champs will go. He’s not out this weekend so safe to assume he’ll miss the Drinmore. Willie won’t want another Mikael D’Haguenet on his hands. Presumably O’Leary will be wanting to keep all of his runners at Christmas apart so he might be one for the Greenmount at Limerick. We don’t know enough about him to know what his best trip is yet. I’m not sure if it was a case of him getting hopelessly outpaced at Cheltenham and stamina bailing him out. I think it was a combination of greeness, inexperience (particularly on fast ground), and little luck in-running (badly hampered by at least one faller). It was only coming down the hill that the penny dropped with him I reckon.
Last Instalment should be aimed at either the National Hunt Chase or Fairyhouse for the National. He’ll gallop all day as he showed in the p2p bumper a few years ago. Put Robbie Mac up on him at Cheltenham in the 4 miler and he’d nearly be the Irish banker of the meeting.
November 25, 2011 at 15:46 #379564Many thanks IC, that clears the water (slightly!).
I guess I’ll keept he powder dry on them for the time being.
November 25, 2011 at 16:58 #379576Philip Fenton on Last Instalment after his last race:
After race at Punchestown Sun, 20th Nov, 2011 (1st) "That was just perfect. It was a great round of jumping and he takes it all in his stride. I’d say he will go for the Fort Leney at Leopardstown at Christmas next." ~ Philip Fenton
They’ll surely try keep them apart though.

When there is evidence for things in racing, I’d rarely, if ever post that ‘I suspect’ something about a horse. Like many others, I find judging horses an instinctive thing as much as anything else – when your instinct is proved right it can be very satisfying – when wrong, sometimes embarrassing but at least the opinion has been upfront and there’s no after-timing.
For example I was pretty sure from watching Cue Card over fences that he needed to be given much more freedom to capitalise on his generally excellent jumping – I posted such here http://wp.me/p1o7dN-CN
I think CC proved today that being able to travel at a decent pace throughout a race helps his jumping. Arguably JT should have been more positive with him at the last, and should certainly have picked his stick up sooner after it rather than looking round. He was giving the year-older Bobs Worth half a stone and it was a good performance though I wouldn’t argue with you about his appetite for a scrap. Either he has none, or, more likely to my eye, he hasn’t the necessary pace at the end of Grade 1 two mile races.
That’s why I had a speculative bet at 42 on Betfair for the RSA and I’d still sooner have that than 5/1 about Grands Crus. Still, I wish you luck with the grey, I don’t bear ill-will or bad hopes about any horse – it’s all about opinions and we will see how things pan out.
November 25, 2011 at 17:38 #379584I don’t think anyone is going to argue about it being a game of opinions but you must have some form of visual evidence for you to suspect that Grands Crus isn’t up for a battle. Otherwise you could add that label to any in horse in training.
Personally, if you had a million about Cue Card I would still be happier with 5/1 Grands Crus. Having said that I was disappointed with him yesterday and on that performance he is far from bombproof. I added Bobs Worth at 10/1 after today’s race mainly because he has a great attitude and the extra half mile should suit. If it came up quick his jumping might be the biggest worry.
