EFL Trophy Q/F Draw
South Section
Wimbledon V Northampton
Luton/Swindon V Plymouth.
Northern Section
Port Vale V Stockport
Huddersfield V DoncasterThe Cobbs have reached this stage twice, 1996/97 and 2003/04. In the first one they lost away at Colchester Utd 2-1, in the second, they lost at home to Colchester Utd 2-3, despite being 2-0 up.
The away fixture to Wimbledon on 10th Feb, is decent enough, historically a happy hunting ground for the Cobbs.A recap of my outstanding Bets with the Cobbs to win the EFL Trophy.

2@66January 20, 2026 at 12:24 #1751109Purchased a ticket for the FA Trophy game against Fylde. I have never been to their ground before but it looks all right on the website. Good to see the bar looks like it supports some local breweries anyway! An added bonus is Preston are away, so at least the pubs there should be quiet before I head out to Kirkham and Wesham.
If Fylde do manage to get into the football league one day, I expect it will be the smallest place to ever have a football league team. Kirkham and Wesham looks like little more than a large village whenever I have passed through it on the way from Preston to Blackpool.
January 20, 2026 at 14:27 #1751118Im not 100% sure but the Forest Green Rovers ground is in Nailsworth population of under 6K, Kirkham and Wesham is above 8k.
Another small town featuring a league team was the ill fated Rushden and Diamonds. Which was a merger of Rushden Town and Irthingborough Town back in the 90’s and owned by Max Griggs he of Dr Martins. They played their matches at Nene Park Irthingborough Population 9k. Just for comparison Brackley is 15K at present.Im sure there are others around up north from history, perhaps some old works teams had a season or two in the FL.
January 20, 2026 at 14:57 #1751128New Brighton FC on the Wirral played in the football league from 1923 to 1951. I think it was the smallest place in England to have a team in the league until Forest Green took the record.
In fact, it was the second team from New Brighton to play in the league. There was a team named New Brighton Tower in the league for about three seasons around the turn of the 19th/20th centuries. After the second New Brighton’s ground was destroyed in a bombing raid in WW2, it moved into Tower’s old ground.
New Brighton’s place was taken over by Workington Town until it was voted out in 1977. Workington is currently bottom of the Northern Premier League.
The young lad with a YouTube channel (I have posted his videos from Brackley and Southport before) visited Workington’s ground on New Year’s Day. It is soon to be demolished, which is a pity but it looks like it has almost fallen down anyway!
January 20, 2026 at 15:00 #1751130“Brackley travel to Truro a 520 mile round trip on a Tuesday night.”
Not an appealing prospect, especially in midweek. But I suppose it could be worse – Gateshead to Truro is something like a 950 mile round trip! Even Yeovil must be over 100 miles away.
January 20, 2026 at 15:23 #1751131That Tower Athletic Ground must have been a great place to see sports, Football, Speedway, Cycling, Athletics etc.
From Wikki, New Brighton Tower were formed to play at an already-built stadium, the Tower Athletic Ground, with a capacity of 80,000. Thats an ambitious owner if true about the capacity, must have been one of the largest at the time. Its good to see this type of historical stuff on old league teams.
I was wondering about the Truro match tonight, could it be the fixture boffins used an algorithm to reduce travelling in midweek or just luck.
January 20, 2026 at 15:53 #1751135It was ambitious but unfortunately the crowds didn’t turn up and the Tower’s owners made a huge loss on the team.
The Tower itself was taller than its rival in Blackpool. Its structure became corroded during WW1 and it had to be demolished.
Little if any trace of the entertainment amenities survive. The ballroom was destroyed in a fire, probably arson. Outside of the Cavern, it was the venue where The Beatles most often performed.
A few pubs in New Brighton have photos of the tower on their walls and there is a Tower Convenience Store. Otherwise you could easily be forgiven for not knowing it ever existed.
January 20, 2026 at 18:28 #1751149Thanks for the link CAS great ground at Workington, looks good for them moving forward with a new ground.
I just remember Workington as a Rugby League town. BBC days in the 70’s..Non league is local and fun.
Nathan, how is the new Taunton Manager doing?

Newcastle to Exeter airport could be the way to do it for Gateshead fans.

January 20, 2026 at 18:45 #1751153Nathan, how is the new Taunton Manager doing?
I’ll be honest I haven’t been down to watch since they went out the cup.
I think its been all draws and defeats other than one game they managed to win when the other team had 3 red cards
4 teams go down in the Southern League
Tiverton are rock bottom on 14 points… they beat Taunton over the new year..
above that the 3 also in the drop zone have 20, 24 and 24 points….
above that 25, 26 points then Taunton 26 points
above Taunton 27 points then a gap to 32 points
so its tight down there and form isn’t in Taunton’s favour
Johnson is saying all the right things but desperate for a result or twoGaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
January 21, 2026 at 08:01 #1751178Truro V Brackley was an entertaining match, at three times through the game I was in a winning position with various bets.
Brackley 1-0 at H/T, then 2-0 after the break and looking set for the away win. Truro score to make it 1-2, so a correct score looks possible. Then Truro score two more and go 3-2 up, killing the Brackley bets. But looking like a possible Brackley HT Truro FT result, only for another Brackley goal to make it 3-3 at FT. So close but so far.January 21, 2026 at 10:34 #1751179It sounded like a humdinger of a game at Truro last night.
Southport did OK up at South Shields. I thought we were going to hold on for a point but it was not to be. A good effort although it is a concern to read on Port Chat about the players visibly tiring in the last half hour. Starting on Saturday, we have 7 games in 21 days. Non league football can be a treadmill sometimes, especially for part time teams. South Shields are a full time club and it sounded like it was the difference last night.
I can understand why Workington are moving to a new ground but that old ground does look like a throwback to a classic era. I am minded to visit before the wrecking ball is taken to it. Unfortunately it would involve getting three trains, changing at Preston and Carlisle. I reckon the town’s geographical isolation was a significant factor in the club being voted out of the league, one year before Southport was the last club to suffer that fate!
January 22, 2026 at 20:24 #1751294Its Saturday time..Im feeling a all round stuffing.

-3.5January 23, 2026 at 19:00 #1751364Merthyr at home tomorrow for Southport, which I am hoping to attend. On the face of it a difficult game against the team in third place but I think Southport have a chance. We have done well in our last three games and we should consider this an opportunity. As long as we don’t concede early, I think we can win.
I notice that Hereford have had to postpone tomorrow’s game against Spennymoor. That means after tomorrow’s fixtures, they will have plenty of games in hand against their relegation rivals (six against Southport).
This is unacceptable. There is clearly an issue with the pitch at Edgar Street. It looked awful when Southport won there towards the end of last year.
No club should have so many games in hand. It also is not doing Hereford in favours with such fixture congestion.
In other news, my local non league team South Liverpool have their longest away journey in the league tomorrow with the game against FC Isle Of Man. I know a few people are making the journey to the island tonight. I should be back from Southport in time to listen to the second half commentary on Manx Radio. South could do with the win.
January 24, 2026 at 14:15 #1751570I thought Merthyr would do well this season, so a tough match today. My memories of the Hereford ground consist of Ronnie Radford’s screamer back in the day on TV. If they get behind with the matches, Id suspect they would play Saturday, Tuesday’s and Thursday’s until the back log is cleared. Nice weekend in the IOM for those travelling with South Liverpool, makes it worth while sometimes.
January 24, 2026 at 14:22 #1751573Not much time to write this up, so just additional bets to the correct score PAT.
Stupidly Ive done a double Northampton 6/1 and Brackley 18/5 to win BBTS 1.5@ 31s
Looking at the Cobbs line up, they are set up to play on the counter atttack.
The West Ham lad we signed in the summer Swyer starts, hes got pace and a shot.
Not scored in the league, but has 5 goals in the EFL trophy.
