Aura About You 40/1November 29, 2008 at 03:34 #193020Cousin Vinny declared to run on Sunday with Patrick Mullins riding. Paul Townend will ride Hurricane Fly. Be very interesting to see how they fare in the market.
Begs the question who is first in the pecking order? Townend is a very good young jockey…
November 29, 2008 at 04:09 #193025Young Townend is some horseman alright. If he keeps the head right, he’s got the ability to go right to the top.
Wouldn’t read too much into the jockey bookings though. Patrick did nothing wrong on Cousin Vinny last year and he knows the horse better than anyone.
November 29, 2008 at 14:32 #193089Wonder if he’d keep the ride all season including Cheltenham?
November 30, 2008 at 04:13 #193298Townend is one of the best jockeys riding in Ireland at the moment, he has a great future ahead of him. For what its worth, I think the Tramp Stamp won’t be disgraced in this company and is over priced.

November 30, 2008 at 19:03 #193355Hmmm, really don’t know what to make of that.
I know they went no pace, but couldn’t believe the difference in times of the first two races, first race over 10 seconds quicker.
November 30, 2008 at 21:39 #193373Cousin Vinny was the one to take out of the race on his hurdling debut. He led the field for most of the contest and will surely be better with a stronger pace, good ground and less prominent tactics.
Hurricane Fly, who had the experience of thirteen career starts before today, travelled and jumped well. He’s obviously got a good engine.
November 30, 2008 at 21:46 #193377I think the Cousin Vinny bubble was well and truly burst and it will ake a lot more than good ground for him to compete wih the likes of Hurrican Fly.
Bumper form can be so misleading as so many good horses simply aren’t mature enough to cope with Cheltenham and 1 year can make a huge difference.
On that performance I will be suprised of you even see him at the Festivalnever mind winning anything there.

Huh? I’m not a huge a fan of the horse, but writing him off because he was unable to win a Grade 1 on his very first hurdles start is insane

A bit premature to say his bubble has been burst, Fist.
As I alluded to, CV was making his debut over timber on just his fourth career start. Hurricane Fly had the benefit of thirteen career starts before today.
Bumper form can be misleading, but he became the first horse to complete the Cheltenham – Punchestown double and was very impressive in doing so. He’s obviously a very good horse.
I thought the horse jumped well and he obviously handles Cheltenham, so I’d be very surprised if he doesn’t turn up at The Festival. The Supreme Novices’ wil be his target, I believe.
It wasn’t just the ground. I think he’ll be better for the experience and a stronger pace. The hurly-burly of a Cheltenham novice race will be perfect for him.
He’s entered in a Navan novice hurdle on December 14th, so if he comes out of this race OK, we could know more then.
November 30, 2008 at 21:58 #193381I don’t see how you can write-off Cousin Vinny on the strength of that race, Fists, given he probably just shades it at the weights.
That said, I’m very happy with the outcome. For a horse that has won over 2m5f in Auteuil’s mud, Hurricane Fly showed plenty of pace in the straight after they had crawled round, and he looks very versatile indeed. Donna’s Palm is no mug, and HF can surely go onto better things from here.
November 30, 2008 at 22:07 #193385Don’t think you can read anything out of that race, it was run at ridiculous pace, it was like a flat race at Longchamp. Slow pace and a sprint for the last furlong.

If that’s the case (i didn’t see the race) then it’s like a hurdle at Auteuil – still think that HF is the best novice hurdler in training and whichever race he goes for at Cheltenham – Ballymore or Supreme I can’t see him being beaten.
November 30, 2008 at 23:58 #193414Bold statement IS, the race was run at a shocking pace, it will be interesting to see how he copes when he has to go at a good clip.

December 1, 2008 at 03:22 #193452I didn’t see the TV coverage but I’d expect WPM to be delighted with Cousin Vinny today and vindicated for the brave decision to take on the best first time out. He jumped beautifully and for me either blew up or got a bit tapped for toe (or both) between the last two. He was staying on again at the finish and IMO, the front two won’t beat him in the New Year.
I haven’t looked at the prices for the Spureme, but I doubt he’s any bigger than he was this morning. The winner is a totally different flat type and has a good turn of foot, but I wonder if he’ll get up the hill at Chelt- maybe more of an Aintree type like Binocular

True enough but given his flat form I wouldn’t expect a true run race to inconvenience him at all. Would be more concerned by ground but even that wouldn’t concern me too much.

Hurricane Fly has won over 21f at Auteuil – there are no doubts about him getting up the hill, Carv.
