As we can’t see into the future JJ is it possible to detect anything about his abilty to come off a fast pace form his 2 prevous wins?
I ask because for some reason I can’t get a connection today to re-run his Punchestown win.

Its kinda like the Rhinestone Cowboy syndrome, was a machine until he ran in race where was pace on (granted the first race he encountered with pace was the champion hurdle), Not saying you could apply this to Hurricane Fly, but as you said, hard to look into the future.

December 2, 2008 at 18:00 #193766It was an interesting race but I’m not sure it will turn out to be a great one in terms of overall form and certainly with view to the festival. The fact it was a lot slower than the juvenile race and the fact they all finished within a few yards of each other makes it slightly questionable. That said Cousin Vinny has showed he can win on better ground and unlike many Irish horses who do well this time of year, that’s something that can’t be ignored. But the form of Dee Ee William’s maiden hurdle gets franked the more horses from it run again and now looks a much better race than Golan Way’s grade 2 win which has took a couple of knocks so far, though I believe on decent ground Golan way could still take a hand in March.
December 2, 2008 at 20:26 #193840Jesus Grassy, has Hurricane Fly assumed the mantle of the great Beef or Salmon!!!
On a serious note, I watched the race again yesterday, he travelled very well throughout the race, is very tidy over his hurdles, but would like to see him again in a race where there is more pace rather than a slow pace and the two furlong sprint.

The very thought JohnJ – go and wash your mouth out!

Seriously though, I do think the horse has a big future. As I said to Carv, he’s already won over two-and-a-half in the mud at Auteuil, so for him to win in a sprint against two smart rivals at the weekend, augurs well for him.
He handles quick ground, and he handles soft ground. He has proven effective from 2m to around 21f. He travels and jumps well. There’s not a lot to dislike about him, as far as novice hurdlers go. Coming out of the Royal Bond, I think a lot of the focus has been on the wrong Mullins horse, to be perfectly honest.

Spot on – it takes a special horse to win around Auteuil. HF is the one for Cheltenham – I just need to figure out which race he goes in.
December 3, 2008 at 02:35 #193940Not seen the oncourse market but Hurricane Fly was put up by pricewise. That will have been responsible for any move on the early prices (well most of any move).
Cousin Vinny drifted like a barge, Martin. Hurricane Fly was solid in the ring, but I would imagine Donna’s Palm was the best-backed horse in the race.
Cousin Vinny looked like the run would bring him on a lot, but Hurricane Fly looked as if there is improvement to come as well, to my eye at least.
December 3, 2008 at 07:46 #193979There are some very smart hurdlers in Ireland and the UK at the moment, the novice races should prove very competitive at the festival. Dee Ee Williams looks a very smart horse beating Shoreacres at Ascot a couple of weeks ago as does Mad Max who I thought was very impressive also, such a big horse, though had the ability to jump a hurdle very well.
I think the Royal Bond was not a great race in respect of the way it was run, however, it did boast a lot of quality. Hurricane Fly, Donnas Palm and Cousin Vinny all look like they have a bright future, and I wouldn’t discount Tramp Stamp, she is a big filly and looked fantastic in the parade ring, she definitely needed a stronger pace to show her class, she will win a big race in the future.
