Goldikova was inconvenienced by the soft ground, and Paco Boy simply didn’t last home in it.
Canford Cliffs didn’t act down the dip in the Guineas, and has shown that form to be all wrong since.
It’s my firm opinion there’s only one horse with even a hope of beating CC on anything but a bog, and it certainly isn’t Makfi.

I had a look at the Guineas again and Makfi beat Canford Cliffs with a bit of authority. I know CC had excuses and he’s better than that, but I would have liked to see CC gain ground on Makfi (and thus conclude he has a bigger engine) before I could state the Hannon horse is the one to beat. Makfi did beat Dick Turpin by more than Canford did for what its worth (both in slow run races), and DT was a bit wide at Ascot as well.

But it’s hard to bet against Canford isn’t it, he just looks and races like a perfect miler. I’m looking forward to this one. I don’t think Rip was fully tuned in the Sussex, but hard to see him winning although maybe he can run second if he pinches a good break.

It’s begining to look like a foregone conclusion that Canford Cliffs, Makfi and Rip Van Winkle will fill the first 3 places but in what order you think they’ll come home in is up to the individual.

Only thing is with these races something always seems to run out of it’s skin and upset the applecart.

One horse who fits the bill and could run a big race is Mark Jonston’s Awzaan who had an awful start to the season.

He caught the eye when cutting back into Delegator’s lead at Newbury running on like a tiger. That was over 7 furlongs so this trip may well suit him better.

Big ask to finish in front of any of the aformentioned but he was well fancied for the Guines. He ran a stinker that and obviously something was ailing and it was 4 months before MJ had him back at the track.

He improved on each of his run since coming back and Mark Johnston has an infuriating habit of improving a horse out of all recognition between runs.

There’s no real way of knowing how good he is but you can bet he’s better than we have seen so far this season

Could be worth a few quid on the place market.

Canford Cliffs ruled out of Queen Elizabeth II
    By Jon Lees 9:14AM 23 SEP 2010

CANFORD CLIFFS was ruled out of Saturday’s Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Thursday morning after scoping unsatisfactorily.

Trainer Richard Hannon said the scope result was "marginal" though not good enough for him to risk the triple Group 1 winner in such an important assignment.

He said on his website: "The scope was marginal, but Canford Cliffs is now such a valuable commodity that you cannot take any chances, so, having listened to veterinary advice from Mike O’Gorman, we have no option but to pull out.

"Everyone in the yard is absolutely gutted, and we realise that it could well cost us the trainers’ championship, but the welfare of the horse comes first and you need to be 100 per cent to go into a battle for a Group 1.

"I must stress that the tracheal wash was not terrible, but the reading was disappointing, and, though he’d probably be fine if there was another race coming up in a week or so, the fact is there is nothing left over a mile, just the Foret [October 2] over seven furlongs.

"However, the great thing is that we have him in training for next year – he has done us proud this season, and he’ll be back better than ever as a four-year-old."

Canford Cliffs, as short as 5-4 favourite, was said to have worked brilliantly on Wednesday in the lead up to Saturday’s clash with 2,000 Guineas winner Makfi. His absence will be a major blow in Hannon’s campaign to win the trainers’ championship.

Reason probably why Makfi had become JF with some firms.

Canford Cliff’s withdrawal emphasises more than ever why punters should take the NRNB option for such events. :)

It’s now Rip’s for the taking.

Absolutely gutted I was so looking forward to the race but with Both Canford Cliffs and MJ’s out it looks like a match. Be an interesting race to watch still and just a case of can Makfi cut down Rip Van Winkle but I’ll be keeping my sheckles in my wallet.

will be interesting to see if johnny has him up the front like last year. even so, i see makfi coming from behind to steal it.

On one hand, it’s a shame we aren’t going to see Canford vs Makfi III – The Ultimate Decider.

On the other hand, the 15/8 I got about Makfi from Hills the other day now looks like the value bet of the season!

Think Beethoven shouldn’t be ignored. Ryan Moore back on board, getting better with each run. May not win but good chance of top three finish

RVW has only one way of running at 1m, and that’s to be up with the pace and forcing it in the closing stages.
Imo, he’ll kick clear coming into the straight, and Makfi won’t have the toe to do anything aboout it.

disagree, personally can’t see how anyone can think a horse that came from behind to win the 2000 guineas won’t have the toe to beat RVW. IMO if you can get evens thats a bargain, the ground should be perfect for it.

    QEII

    Bushman:

Acts well on soft, probably equally effective at a truly run mile as at 1m2f. Not good enough, even at his best and nowhere near best last time.

    Rip Van Winkle:

One of the two top milers last season. Seemed to show most of that speed in Sussex Stakes when first to kick for home. However, could not show the same pace in 1m2f International, needing all the trip to get on top. Again no speed in Irish Champion, well below form and now drops in trip. Aidan must produce a training feet to get him back to top form, this being his fourth race in two months. Unraced on a soft surface since debut. Has a pacemaker and will need a strongly run race to have any chance.

    Air Chief Marshall:

    Pacemaker.

    Beethoven:

Ran well enough in Irish Champion, over a trip probably a shade too far. In form but has had plenty of racing, not very big, lacks scope for further progress. Needs to improve if either of the big guns run to form. Ryan Moore takes over in the saddle from trainer’s apprentice son unable to claim last time. Possibly very best form on a sound surface (good or firmer).

    Hearts Of Fire:

Will prefer how this race is likely to be run than when favourite at Salisbury (held up in a slowly run race). Probably acts on any ground. Would stand an each way chance if reproducing slightly unlucky third to Canford Cliffs and Dick Turpin in St James Palace Stakes. However, that was in a week every Pat Eddery runner excelled themselves. Nowhere near that form now.

    Makfi:

Beat below form Goldicova and Paco Boy last time, former did not act on the ground, latter didn’t stay in the ground (also early season animal). Has by far the best chance of winning here, but flattered by Deauville and current price probably over estimates his chance. Had excuses when ran poorly only try at this course. Does though, have potential to improve further. Acts really well on a soft surface.

    Poet’s Voice:

Also acts well on a soft surface. Should have won at Salisbury penultimate start, jockey needed to settle him and dropped out last. In a slowly run race, produced a terrific turn of foot to almost catch front running Sea Lord. Again in a slowly run small field last time, held up, produced another burst of speed to go right away from Main Aim. Striding out really well on the soft ground to win eased down. What that run is worth is difficult to say. Only serious rival probably not at his best, but overall impression is of a horse on the up and stable still in excellent form. Poet’s Voice looks worth an each way bet at around 7/1.

    Red Jazz:

Admirable horse, but barely up to Group 3 level, possibly best at a furlong less and on a firmer surface. Often a front runner and may not get the run of the race this time.

My 100% Book for Good-Soft or Soft (if not verging on heavy):
    Makfi 47.5% 11/10, Rip Van Winkle 22.5% 7/2,

    Poet’s Voice 18% 9/2

    , Beethoven 5.5% 18/1, Hearts Of Fire 5% 20/1, Bushman 1% 100/1, Red Jazz 0.3% 300/1, Air Chief Marshall 0.2% 500/1.

    If I were a bookie I’d offer to 111.8%:
Makfi Evens, Rip Van Winkle 3/1, Poet’s Voice 4/1, Beethoven 14/1, Hearts Of Fire 15/1, Bushman 50/1, Red Jazz 80/1, Air Chief Marshall 150/1.

I’m on Poet’s Voice at 16/1 and have no intention of trading, the horse wins and smashes this unfit Makfi dog who can’t breathe properly going right handed because it has a dodgy wind pipe, cut his nackers and send him to japan.

Mr Wilson; That was one of the few posts that made me laugh heartily out loud.

    I am also on Poet’s Voice @ 16’s (1/4 first 3). 8)
