Surprised there has been no thread on this cause it looks the most exciting G1’s this year and looks set to be a cracker on so many levels.
– Canford Cliffs vs Makfi Part 3
– The G1 return of Delegator (has a prep race coming I believe)
– Rip Van Winkle returns to a mile along with Dick Turpin
– Cape Blanco may make a surprise apperance? All in all revolves around the massive Canford Cliffs vs Makfi rematch.
September 12, 2010 at 22:05 #317276Cape Blanco will not run.
I really hope Rip doesn’t run, he is not a miler, however if he does run, I’m on him.
September 12, 2010 at 23:21 #317283Steinbeck will win he is back to his best now and will win it. be like Twice Over winning 2 easy races and then winning the champion stakes Steinbeck is back

The most obvious answer is usually the correct one. Canford or Makfi dependant on the ground.

Realistically although Rip Van Winkle is a miler 100% IMVHO he’s not in the same league as Canford Cliffs these days.
Whether he’ll turn up or not is open to debate but it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if he missed it.
He’s tended to get a bit outpaced of late as we saw at York. He took a long time to get going and if he does that against Canford Cliffs Murtagh won’t see the way Hughsie went.
With Makfi you can put his defeat of Goldikova down to pure brilliance on his part or an off day on hers.
Both he and Canford Cliffs can be made excuses for. Canford Cliffs was slow to come to himself and wasn’t 100% in the Guineas and Makfi had a snotty nose or something when he got stuffed in the St James Palcae Stakes.
Make no mistake there was no fluke about Makfi’s win in France. Soumillon was so confident that when Hughsie had gone for Paco Boy he sat motionless for about 5 strides without losing any ground and when he did say go the result was never in doubt.
I’m usually very Confident when Canford Cliffs goes to post but this is very much a 2 horse race between 2 very good horses and I don’t mean Canford Cliffs and Rip Van Winkle. Makfi is a huge danger to Canford Cliffs.
Canford Cliffs is a league above Paco Boy so Makfi won’t find him as easy to beat but if the Ground Comes up very soft he’s not going to be 7/2 or anything like it.
The perfect scenario would be for all 3 to turn up 100% spot on and it could be one of the best mile races seen in years. Doubt if we’ll ever see the best of Rip again though. He’s had way too may tough races at the wrong trips.
My idea of the result would be:-
1. Canford Cliffs
2. Makfi
3. AOB1/2 length 2 1/2 lengths..
September 13, 2010 at 09:10 #317313Watched Steinbeck on the teli.Seemed a little light and like he was just starting to recover from whatever ailed him.He may take a month more to get back to normal.

Great summery! concise and insightful.
Makfi does better on soft to very soft so case of good to soft and above might exclude him as a threat to Canford leaving the latter a strong fav. Can’t place any other as worthy to Canford, even Steinback, who is currently strong and in form, is not an easy choice for the task having been beaten at least twice by Canford.September 13, 2010 at 12:20 #317357

Can’t see RVW being seriously trained for this as he already has one on the mantlepiece – much like he wasn’t seriously trained for this year’s Sussex either.
His next big target looks sure to be at the Breeder’s Cup – whether it’s 1m or 10f won’t really matter around Churchill Downs – but I fully expect him to show he’s as good as ever.September 13, 2010 at 12:32 #317359Yeah but were reasons why Steinbeck got beat twice by CC in Ireland it was his 1st run. and at Ascot the pacemaker missed the break which meant Steinbeck was in front. now he is back in form i think he can win it
September 13, 2010 at 12:43 #317364Makfi at 9/2 on BF has to be the value. Monster performance in the Prix Jacques the last day and he handles any ground. Canford Cliffs took a big step forward in the Sussex but he beat a half fit Rip no more than a neck and Makfi’s beaten him already this season. Hard to fancy Rip considering his best form is 7 runs ago at Goodwood last year.
Makfi it is.
September 13, 2010 at 12:45 #317365yeah but that head could have been 2L
Canford murdered him

So what would be the reason this time? Ascot course plus Canford makes kind of a deja vu for poor Steinbeck. He seems to be in form, I’ll give you that, but I’m not confident he is up for it.
September 13, 2010 at 22:12 #317431Steinbeck looked a little light and wane I thought at the Curragh. He won but I would not touch him until he has run a big one.He needs to bulk out a piece and shed his sick bay image.
September 14, 2010 at 02:52 #317445Canford Cliffs is a league above Paco Boy ..
Boom tissss! I wouldn’t even say he was as good as Paco, let alone in a league above!
Using an 80% fit RVW as a yard stick, and with the undoubted improvement of Paco Boy, I’d say Canford has a good bit to find.
September 14, 2010 at 06:47 #317450It seems to me that the horses Makfi’s beaten are, in the main, better than the horses CC has beaten.
There may well be some excuses for his Ascot run so, on the day, I’ll be on Makfi.
That said, CC is a very, very good horse, and it seems as if this year’s three-year-old milers are better than their 10/12f counterparts (Cape Blanco, Bekhabad and, maybe, Workforce excepted).
BlueSky @pghenn.bsky.social
So don't run, just like the others always do
September 14, 2010 at 08:30 #317456Makfi had a throat infection I believe at Royal Ascot. Whether or not he’s good enough to beat Canford Cliffs remains to be seen but you can put a line through that Ascot run.

Agree. 5/2 is a bet on Makfi, maybe even 9/4.
