In the two proper games where England have had a challenge (Tunisia+Columbia) England have shown their inexperience. They are a young team and still learning on the job, but when they conceded in both games, their heads dropped and for long spells of the game began to panic, allowing the other sides a lot more chances and possession. There also allowed the dirty tactics of Columbia to get at them, and Lingard especially started to show petulance which didn’t help. BigG while you say they didnt have many clearcut chances, they were the better side + Columbia knew that hence their attempts to break the game up with endless stoppages and deliberate fouls.
Alli needs dropped, he’s clearly carrying an injury and he’s basically a passenger. If he was in the form of 2 seasons back i could understand it being difficult to drop him, but last season he wasn’t all that great and they really need to bring somebody else in there. It should probably be Loftus Cheek, for all i don’t think he was anywhere near as good vs Belgium.
Sterling is also mighty frustrating, he is so strong and fast, yet his ability to kick a football is non existent.
Dier was dire when he came on, i’d much prefer the legs of Delph in times like last night.
Maguire was exceptional, Pickford, Henderson, Kane, Trippier all good as well…

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!July 4, 2018 at 09:58 #1359365through is the main thing, but no gazza in side will always make life tough. Thought Maguire was superb but walker gives me the sh*** at CH. Now onto that easy QF we were wanting.
July 4, 2018 at 11:40 #1359367Hi Jackh, I take your point that they were the better side, at least in the early part of the game,
but I didn’t say they didn’t have many clear cut chances, I said that the Columbian keeper didn’t
have a save to make in the whole game. That is now 240 minutes without a goal scored in open play,
and as I said, not even a shot on goal in the 120 minutes last night. I just think that the way some
people are going on (not in this forum) is over the top. The good thing is that England have a predator
in the shape of Harry Kane, but he needs the service. Hopefully the confidence from getting through a
tricky match will have a positive effect on them and they might still be gelling as a team. I think
they should get through the next match, but for those, and there are some, who think that Sweden is
a mere stepping stone to the semis, they need a reality check.July 4, 2018 at 12:11 #1359368Agree BigG certainly is a worry. Trippier seems to be consistently the likeliest to create goalscoring opportunities, + whilst that’s a nice positive to have from a right back, i do think the Alli, Sterling, Lingard attack behind Kane is failing to work.
Alli for injury reasons and partly form, Sterling, as he’s very one dimensional and Lingard because i think he was getting frustrated with the rough game last night.
Either way it’s a massive worry. What England would give to have big Zaha in their side nowadays!
I do think the 3 behind Kane are decent players but they will need to step up as Sweden will be very organised, even if they are an average enough side.

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!July 4, 2018 at 13:01 #1359369Anyone think Pickford made a mistake in an interview afterwards?
It’s a difficult one Ginge, I’m with you that he would be better keeping those things
to himself, but it’s now a case of bluff and double bluff. Do they put it the other
side now knowing that Pickford expects them to put it to their usual pattern, or do
they (or Pickford) think that as they are now expected to put it to the opposite side,
so just put it to the original choice side. Or knowing that he knows their usual side
and he expects them to put it to the other side, but considering that he may have worked
that out and therefore they should in fact put it to the opposite side, or………..my
head hurts
July 4, 2018 at 13:20 #1359370Penalty takers mix it up these days anyway, high, low, left, right, middle. Pickford can only go by most frequent and even then any Nation normally only has the one taker whilst others may not even be the club taker so don’t know exactly how many videos he’s watched.
I agree Sweden have no superstars but they are a well drilled, organised, disciplined side who will defend, defend, defend and then try and break quick when the chance comes along. England will have to be much better to break them down and get in between them. Other than the set pieces I can’t really see where the goals are coming from. The game is three days away and already has 0-0 written all over it. Now where do we think Andreas Granqvist is going to put his spot kick.?
Also where was Vardy hiding in the shoot out.? Has taken many a penalty for Leicester in the past

just stick it down the middle. As long it’s high enough for his feet not to take it out then that’s the best place to put it. Keeper always dives left or right.
July 4, 2018 at 15:53 #1359378I said to Pickford via the tv on Falco’s penalty not to dive and just stand there, he didn’t listen

Lined up for number six perhaps? Could have been a masterstroke if that was the plan and it was needed. Just glad it worked out how it did!

‘Easier’ than facing Brazil but certainly not easy

July 5, 2018 at 01:25 #1359415Just in case Mr Southgate is looking in and following advice:
The thread title was about the last match of the Group stage, not a possible rematch in the Final.
Value Is EverythingJuly 7, 2018 at 17:20 #1359671well done England and backers onto wednesday
July 7, 2018 at 22:56 #1359689Well this is getting serious now boys and girls! Fantastic all over the pitch today. Not perfect but it was great to see. The contrast with two years ago is astounding.
Croatia will be far from pushovers but this may be the best chance to win it that we’ll ever see. It’s certainly our best chance since you know when. Whatever happens now they can come home proud for once.
July 7, 2018 at 23:24 #1359690Croatia looked cream crackered at the end there. They will get an adrenaline boost that comes with winning but that is twice in two rounds they have gone the distance. England on the other hand were in cruise control today, had the rest in the final group game and have kept the momentum ticking over. Kane has a decent record against Lovren and at this present moment in time it’s advantage England.

July 9, 2018 at 17:53 #1359781Quarter-Final could’ve been very different without Man Of The Match, Pickford. However, overall Sweden were limited to just one or two chances – which is encouraging. Croatia showed in the Group stages they’re a better side than Sweden – but have been less impressive since.
Fingers crossed.
Value Is EverythingJuly 12, 2018 at 12:05 #1359952May I be so bold to blow my own trumpet for a change .
I refer our esteemed forum members to page 4 of this thread and the predictions of yours truly .
Brazil aside , I called England’s chances / progress spot on; teams they’d play , defeat , and ultimately the round where their World Cup dream would end .
