I suppose we’ll find out when the line ups are named

June 28, 2018 at 18:27 #1358801surely now they want to top the group?
Why?
Columbia followed by either Sweden or Switzerland.
Or alternatively
Japan followed by Brazil or Mexico.Japan might be slightly easier, but losing avoids the probability of Brazil in the quarters.
Admittedly if losing this game we may play Spain, but Spain have to play not one but two games before we meet them. They could be knocked out by Russia, Denmark or (in particular) Croatia. ie Bigger chance Spain will be knocked out before we need to play them than the other joint favourites – Brazil.Value Is EverythingJune 28, 2018 at 18:34 #1358802GT we are not good enough to pick and choose the back three need more time together, as when they play someone half decent they will be ripped a new one. The back three have hardly played together in this system.
June 28, 2018 at 18:35 #1358803Glad he’s playing the reserves.
If we win we win.
If we don’t it doesn’t matter and there’s even an advantage.Value Is EverythingJune 28, 2018 at 18:41 #1358804GT we are not good enough to pick and choose the back three need more time together, as when they play someone half decent they will be ripped a new one. Don’t see why we’re not good enough. There’s the Japan/Columbia game next which we should win – not playing anyone “half decent” yet. When so many matches come so close together it makes sense to rest players when we can.
Value Is EverythingJune 28, 2018 at 18:50 #1358805well I beg to differ but as in most things people see things differently.
Cant have three centre half’s who ‘aint been tested in that system not being out there getting to know each other in a game situation. Walker/stones/Maguire are an accident waiting to happen when we play someone half decent
right off to watch this friendly

Columbia are half decent GT and England haven’t played anyone half decent yet, but Tunisia gave them a fright when things got tough, and a 50/50 pen was given against them. They looked shaky after that for a while. The Knock Out stage is definitely the acid test for this England side.
Agree with nwalton on the back 3, really will be interesting to see how they get on, they haven’t looked too convincing yet, and they will need to change things in midfield. Jordan Henderson basically on his own vs most teams that play 3 in the midfield or a few advanced midfielders. Can you imagine 1 CM vs Mertens, Hazard and KDB as an example?

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!June 28, 2018 at 19:01 #1358808Que sera sera and all that. Brazil would be tough of course but Sweden and Switzerland didn’t get out of those groups by accident. It’s just nice not to have to watch from behind the sofa for once
June 28, 2018 at 21:17 #1358817Thankyou Mr Southgate.
Value Is EverythingJune 28, 2018 at 21:31 #1358818England lose to Belgium and what happens?
Bookmakers shorten England’s odds and lengthen Belgium’s.
Must say, brilliant by Pickford – going with the wrong hand and not quite getting there. Couldn’t have worked out better.
Value Is EverythingJune 28, 2018 at 22:44 #1358823Yes, if Belgium were that serious about not winning themselves then they would have started the game with Simon Mignolet in between the sticks, no brainer…..

June 29, 2018 at 10:07 #1358856Can you really just put a line through last night’s match?
Had they so wished I think Belgium could have hammered England. On the few occasions (thankfully) they were bothered to push forward the England defence looked suspect, particularly the goalkeeper who looked a complete liability. On an international stage he is third division.
There was nothing from centre midfield – Dier was absolutely useless – and the energy of the previous games had disappeared. The strikers did not get much service and were generally ineffective. Rashford isn’t really a finisher and fluffed the only easy chance. On that evidence if they have to turn to any of this bunch to ensure progression then they really are in trouble.
We are clearly relying heavily on Kane but although he has five goals they are made up of two penalties, two scraps and a fluke. Those goals were against the minnows and unless we create more chances I suspect he is going to find it difficult to increase that tally. Set pieces will almost certainly continue to provide the best chances.
Colombia cannot have done anything but gain confidence from watching last night’s match. They haven’t been impressive but they also haven’t conceded a goal since the opening match which they effectively played with ten men. I suspect this will be a much harder task for England than beating Japan.
June 29, 2018 at 11:12 #1358861Ah well thats the English media at it again, trumpetting your lots chance,, for once in the build up to the finals it was quite reserved almost aknowledging an average team that would get out the groups and maybe get to 1/4s. us Scots werent forced into our usual stance of anyone but England, due to the media circus, along with having a fairly amiable manager it was alost bearable listening to the previews of finals
Now all of a sudden a path is plotted to the fnal due to beating Panama :) time fo the war paint on from us now again it is

, give us sweaty socks a right chortle when it eventually goes tits up
Im actually surprised at firstly bookies pricing England up as around 4/7 to beat Colombia, and the confidence that most of you lot have of beating Colombia, its very much a 50/50 match in my eyes, and would probably slightly favour Colombia if James is fit
Got luck neighbours
June 29, 2018 at 14:35 #1358867Don’t think anyone on here is bigging England up
I’ve stated somewhere on the forum it’s the worst squad of players for individual talent they have had in my living memory. That doesn’t mean they can’t perform as a team though and get results as underdogs when facing better sides
This thread is about finishing 2nd to get the better half of the draw. Japan would have been easier than Colombia no doubt but look beyond that. Switzerland are decent side, their are no easy games come the knockout stages just easier ones than the harder ones.Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
June 29, 2018 at 14:54 #1358869Are you sure you’re not seeing something you want to see, Rooster?
Ah well thats the English media at it again, trumpetting your lots chance,
Ye’, what happened when it was Scotland that made it to the finals and England stayed at home?
We’re on the march with Ally’s Army
We’re going to the Argentean
And we’ll really shake them up
When we win the World Cup
‘Cos Scotland are the greatest football team.As a patriotic British schoolboy was devastated as that greatest football team lost 3 – 1 to Peru and drew 1 – 1 with Iran. But cheered Archie’s Gemmell’s wonder goal against the dutch.
English were generally too pessimistic about our chances going in to this World Cup. Then – after we qualify for the next round with a game to spare – we feel more hopeful. Then, the draw opens up and we’ve got a winnable way to the final. ie In previous years the draw hasn’t been kind, knocked out by Germany in a penalty shoot out and Brazil by a fluke goal etc. Columbia may be under-estimated and yes they have a chance. But they’re not a fine Germany team or an impressive Brazil. Seeing Columbia as favourites to beat us – is making yourself look the architypal jealous Scot.
It’s not that our press/us believing we will win it, Rooster; it’s that we have a better chance of doing so. Our reserve team beaten 1-0 by Belgium’s reserve team last night… And if Rashford had taken the best chance of the match it may have been different. Doesn’t really mean much as a reserves match anyway, but even so imo England’s A team are probably slightly inferior to Belgium’s, but we’ve been given an easier (not easy but “easier”) way to the final – which has to be allowed for in betting… And it is not just us that have a good draw, it’s that most others have a much harder route. Of Portugal, Argentina, Uruguay, France, Mexico, Belgium and Brazil we will need to play just one. Or to put it another way those teams have a harder task and will knock each other out to leave just one…
World Cup favourites Brazil have a potentially tricky next match with Mexico – a far better team than Columbia. If Brazil get past Mexico it’ll probably be Belgium – a better team than our potential quarter-final Switzerland or Sweden.
And even the favourites from our side of the draw have bigger hurdles than we do before a potential meeting in the semi’s. ie Spain need to beat the hosts Russia (anyone for a debatable VAR penalty?). Then they have a probable meet up with perhaps THE team of this World Cup so far – Croatia. So – not that it’ll be easy – we may not need to beat either of the joint favourites Brazil and Spain to win the World Cup.
All these things need to be taken in to consideration when assessing chances. It is not that England are the best team in this tournament or even the third best (that’s not what Bookies are thinking)… It’s that the draw has given us a better chance.
Yes, you’ll be glad to know that “better” chance still means you’ll in all probability get your chance to cheer when it goes “tits up” for your fellow Brits…
Just as you did in 1982, We have a dream too, please allow us to dream Rooster.
Value Is EverythingJune 29, 2018 at 19:03 #1358883oh boys relax was only in jest, weve been beaten down enugh over the years, that almost given up on international football, aimed mostly at the media change that was clearly vivid after beating the Panama that i was inferring at, not you guys

Also i stand by that Colombia are at time a very very good technical team, and just watching some of the preview it seems they have jumped on the yes easier passage to the semi final – Colombai – Sweden/ Switzerland, both winnable, but i would have colombai slight favourites – especially their midfield ability of keeping the ball could be the beating of England – tho with Harry its almost a goal of a start really
June 29, 2018 at 22:05 #1358906Before the tournament began , I backed Brazil to win the World Cup .
However , I also backed England to reach the semi-finals , on the assumption that Belgium would win the group and therefore , at some point , face Brazil in that half of the draw .
In my opinion England will beat Columbia , leaving the way clear to meet either Sweden or Switzerland in the quarter-finals . I take Sweden to win that encounter , before England duly eliminate them from the tournament .
My bet on England will have succeeded and then it’s in the lap of the Gods – but I think that’s as far as Gareth Southgate’s men will get .
