History tells us that England lose momentum when they make too many changes and then try to get going again in subsequent matches.
Better off keeping the momentum going and only make changes that are essential. You have to beat the good teams to win the world cup so who cares when it is.June 26, 2018 at 18:15 #1358644You have to beat the good teams to win the world cup so who cares when it is.
No, you don’t. That’s the point, one half of the draw contains fewer top clubs and this is a Cup competition, not a League.
To win the FA Cup – if Southampton draw Man City, Man U, Chelsea or Liverpool in the third round Southampton’s odds of winning the competition lengthen. If Southampton draw an inferior team then their odds of winning the Cup will shorten. ie Avoiding the best teams means their chance of winning the competition is greater. Also, the further Southampton go through the competition without drawing one of the top clubs (or the fewer top teams they meet) the easier it is to reach the final/win the Cup… And the further they go without meeting a top team the more chance there is of someone else (Wigan?) knocking the top teams out…
And what if the whole draw from 3rd round to final is done in one go and that he has the choice of which half of the draw to take?
Does he take the half containing Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham with Everton also thrown in for good measure – knowing that he’ll play Man City in the 4th round?
Or does he choose the half with just Arsenal and Man U as top clubs – knowing he’ll only face Man U if Man U reach the Semi’s?
ie Does Mark Hughes want to have a far better chance of winning the FA Cup or not?
Does Southgate want a far better chance of winning the World Cup or not? It’s a no brainer.
Value Is EverythingJune 26, 2018 at 19:06 #1358648England have to many spurs players in team (squad) to win anything, when it comes down to winning a big one, they will bottle it like at club level.
June 26, 2018 at 19:13 #1358651That did go through my mind too.
Value Is EverythingJune 27, 2018 at 14:13 #1358697I think resting the majority would make sense.
England started 4 days behind the opening game so that is a disadvantage in terms of playing more games in less days if getting to the final. This way the players get to be refreshed and ready to rock and roll in the knockouts. It’s a question of momentum over fitness, it’s a big squad and this is the perfect game to make use of it.Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
June 27, 2018 at 15:10 #1358706Just looking at the Group F qualifying.
Who goes through if Germany beat S.Korea 1-0 and Sweden beat Mexico 1-0?
Goal difference would all be the same between three of them and:
Under the rule of the game between teams counting:
Sweden would’ve beaten Mexico so go through.
Germany beat Sweden so go through.
And Mexico beat Germany so go through.
Does when the matches happened make a difference?
Does the fact Germany put two past Sweden give Germany the advantage?
Or do the three games cancel each other out and it goes to disciplinary record?Value Is EverythingJune 27, 2018 at 16:13 #1358709Don’t know what would happen but the Possibility of that happening at the moment has just increased

June 27, 2018 at 16:54 #1358716Woo-hoo!!! Surely no way back now
June 27, 2018 at 16:58 #1358717Question: When did England last get further than Gemany in a World Cup? 1966 anyone?
June 27, 2018 at 21:07 #1358727England are favourites to beat Belgium, yet Belgium are shorter to win the tournament.
Please… (thread title).
Come On Belgium!!!!
Value Is EverythingJune 28, 2018 at 00:44 #1358737Southgate, BBC and ITV pundits are being disengenuous by saying losing would affect confidence in future games.
If Liverpool play Stoke and West Brom, beating Stoke 2-1 and West Brom 6-1 and then less than a week later (whilst their rivals play a third tiring time) Liverpool’s first team have a rest day. The only game the whole Liverpool squad have is Liverpool Reserves playing Arsenal Reserves…
How would the result of a Reserves match affect the confidence of the first team?

…And you don’t run the risk of a defeat ruinning confidence gained from the Stoke and west Brom games; or first team players getting injured or tired.
If the Reserves win then they can say “even our Reserve team are winning”.
Second half against Panama gives me some hope.
It was a strange second half, as if England weren’t really trying. As if they did not want to get in front of Belgium’s goal difference? Kane looked embarrassed when the ball deflected in off his heel and a half-hearted celebration from the team. Very few chances in that second half. Then a strange goal for Panama where those near the ball played off-side and those furthest away didn’t. Were they already wondering whether it was good to win the group? tbh Southgate needs to say he wants to win, media and FIFA wouldn’t like it. But I’ll believe it when seeing it.Just hope someone in England’s back room understands a defeat increases their chance of winning the tournament.
Play the Reserves!!!
Value Is EverythingJune 28, 2018 at 13:41 #1358766I hope England beat Belgium, the bigger the margin the better. Nothing to be gained by losing football matches.
June 28, 2018 at 13:54 #1358768It’s a good time to play the squad members because it’ll be back to the 1st team from after today until they get knocked out/win so giving run outs to the likes of Trent Alexander Arnold etc will help their development and give them valuable experience of playing on the big stage. Plus if both camps are thinking the same as Ginger, it will be played as a bit of a friendly in terms of shots on goal but if coming down to bookings it’s better the second string pick those up.

Apart from having a better chance of winning the tournament if we lose today.
Value Is EverythingJune 28, 2018 at 17:03 #1358787surely now they want to top the group?
